Destiny Nearing 13 Million Players, 500+ People Working on the Game Right Now

Almost 13 million people--12,869,066 to be exact--have played Bungie's shooter Destiny, the developer has revealed. The milestone, which Bungie announced on its blog, comes after the release of Destiny's free demo for all platforms. It's unclear how many copies of Destiny have actually been sold.

Destiny's 12.87 million players have created 22.93 million Guardians, and together have spent 872.4 million hours in the game so far, Bungie went on to say. The developer also revealed some staffing numbers, saying it currently has more than 500 people working on the game and/or its sequel.

500+ people lighting up a blunt going "ayyy lmao" while having no idea what they're doing.

The game AND/OR its sequel. If that's the criteria, of course everyone they're employing is working on Destiny 1 or Destiny 2.

The OP headline is misleading. Article states 500 working on this game and/or its sequel.

500 people?

Only 1 writer and creative director on staff I am assuming?
Also a couple environmental and character assets designer as well I bet.

300 must be the marketing team.

It's a shame that Destiny is entering a similar space to CoD; it's massively successful, but it's not actually all that good or interesting.

You guys are too harsh on this game, yes it's story is shit but it is damn good fun.

It was fun with friends the first couple of times. Then I realized I was essentially replaying the same missions over and over and over again with little variation, and the multiplayer was broken as all hell. So I left. The lack of content and the way Bungie has handled just about everything about the game, its QA/updates and the community is atrocious.

This has nothing to do with sales, these numbers include players of the free demo. Activision still won't disclose hard sales data.

They'll continue to try and skew meaningless player data like this to make it seem like people haven't wised up to Bungie's bullshit.

Usually I can understand where resources went, but honestly what was everyone doing prior to Destiny 1 releasing?

Did they throw out a ton of content early on or only hire up really late in the process?

Yeah, they still seem to shy away from talking about active players.

Destiny came free with my Xbox One. I played till like 23 or something then traded it and got forza horizon. Was cool for a week or two.

Glad I didn't pay full because it was bare as fuck

They bungied it, same as they always do.

I bet there was a ton of shit pulled from this game and held for the sequel.

They probably realized they would need another 2 years to really accomplish what they wanted so they patched together destiny 1 from near completed content and continued work towards destiny 2.

There is no explanation for how simple and repetitive this game is.

Rumors say that they threw out a lot, like that leaked story from Reddit a while ago that also mentioned content that wasn't in the final game. The fact that the E3 2013 trailer had part of a cutscene that lined up with what that person described may lead credence to that, too.

Pretty sure they moved the OT (13 now btw) so the rest of GAF could forget how many of us still actively play it.

I'm fine with bashing the faults (it has tons) , but you have to recognize that mechanically it's still the best console FPS in a decade.

No excuse for the overpriced underdeveloped DLC though.

Why don't some of those staff members release an expansion that isn't a complete waste of money and a cash grab? How about a brand new signifcant and well-written storyline, multiple new raids and strikes, a shit ton of new weapons and armors and brand new planets (Jupiter, Mercury, Europa)?

It wouldn't be enough to pull me back in personally but it may be a nice thing for all those players who have stuck with Destiny through so much of Bungie's crap.

They packaged up a basic version of the game they wanted to make so that they would have a game to release this year.

Those 500 people are continuing to work on the real destiny for 2016.

Yeah, but even if we take bungled releases like ACU, it's super obvious what all the staff spent time doing.

Here it's like Bungie had their entire 250->500 person staff doing what for four years?

No shit. Seriously, what the hell did the do with all that time AND manpower?
