OT: But Miley Cyrus was the fucking worst. Idk why I just thought of her, but man, she was horrible.

Can't be worse than Kreayshawn.

lowkey didn't even have a problem with her and I thought gucci gucci was kinda dope. the controversy around her was ridiculous once people realized she never even said nigga. plus she put work in; she shot the video to one of my favorite songs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISHPumshGgA

I don't give Miley much criticism for the fact that she's just doing it for fun. Idk if it's just me but I don't think she takes her urban persona seriously. All the non-existent ass twerking she does and the tongue thing are just her gimmicks for people to talk about her.

Honestly, Iggy Azalea is no less hip hop than someone like Missy Elliot. Neither of them are great rappers per se, but their catchy, pop-fueled choruses and infectious flow makes them both enjoyable.

wat. Missy is awesome and should no be put in the same place with iggy.Missy is far more talented.

This kept up for a pretty long time, and in some cases some douche was crowned the King of this for some unexplained reason.

King of stealing and rebranding culture and calling it their own? Who? Who would do such a thing? And well enough that they could be called King?

Of course a million Iggy's could. Outside of music nerds no one cares about the black roots in genres that were once dominated by black artists or had a healthy amount of black performers such as blues, punk, ska or rock'n'roll

It's certainly true for Jazz but I don't think that this is for Blues or Reggae/Ragga which is still predominantly black.

Iggy taking twitter shots at Q Tip now. A tell tale sign this woman has no respect at all for the genre or its roots. When an artist with 20 times her legacy and influence weighs in on a discussion, shut the fuck up and listen. This is Q Tip here, not some crazy, emotionally unstable 23 year old.

yeah that was the wrong response.....

Wow are ya'll actually talking shit about Elvis now? How sad. Nearly everything he put out for like the better part of a decade was amazing. The only people who actually talk shit about Elvis probably never even bothered to listen to his music.

i swear hearing this race relations are getting me so boiled up and making me have racist thoughts. i am sick of the public perception and distrust and un fairness to blacks and our history and two of my best friends are white, but im starting to feel disconnected with this world and how unruly and unsympathetic it is. i never dreamed t feel this way and always felt like equality would exist

I don't understand how this shitty rap music is THE African-American music/heritage !?!??!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this genre start in the 80s and became a thing in the 90s and now (and even then?) it's just about fucking bitches and eating asses like cupcakes and wet vaginas etc..? Such art.

Whatever the fuck happened to Jazz and Blues, which basically gave birth to Rock'n'Roll?
Guess this idiot Azelia Banks thinks black music started with Snoop Dogg and lil wayne.

Do you fools listen to music or do you just skim through it?

Mainstream is a lot of BS, but there is plenty of great hip hop music out there. I am sure we could all link some for you.

I personally think the complaints related to "gentrification" of black music are kinda misdirected. I think it's more due to black people not owning, or at least not perceived to own, the music they create. If say black-created record labels like Motown had as much success in say country music as white-owned labels I don't think anyone would truly give a shit. It would not feel like losing something you own.

Royalan alluded to this as well. I agree with you both.

When has releasing sex tapes or any XXX material been a bad thing for celebrities. People seem to eat that shit up and make worthless people popular. The fake notice was going to be doing her a favor.

I think an interesting thing in a lot of these cultural appropriation discussions is that sometimes the fanbase is confused with the artist themselves. Like the Elvis thing mentioned earlier, he seemed to understand and respect his influences (I'd argue that Macklemore and Eminem are similar cases), but there were definitely plenty of people who listen to him and basically gave zero fucks about those influences, and probably thought he was the first blues artist with something to say.

That said, in Iggy's specific case, she's said plenty of problematic shit on her own, so some of the shit she catches is very much valid, lol.

Isn't this proving their points?

"The persistence of such attitudes was fueled by resentment over the fact that Presley, whose musical and visual performance idiom owed much to African American sources, achieved the cultural acknowledgment and commercial success largely denied his black peers."

Elvis owes a lot to black performers and would admit such but the issue here is the reverence and acknowledgement he receives while his black influences are largely forgotten. The claim that he -stole- music from black artist is largely exaggerated on the other hand.

It wasn't the wrong response. It's more of her "high road" ish, but it was fine. Q came across presumptuous as all hell (while making her look better in the process) and could have just directed that comment at everyone.

Also, since he is a legend, you know he could have probably just got in touch with her, off of twitter, and handled it the way they did back in the day. Nope, gotta jump in on the twitter fuckery.

The Elvis thing doesn't even have anything to do with Iggy's dumbass. iggy is on the hot seat for actually saying stupid ass shit. The whole issue about authenticity and writing is specific to this genre and is really secondary.

The Elvis thing was brought up to give some historical context to the appropriation discussion, not that it completely parallels this current situation with Iggy.

Don't get the "he should have addressed her off of twitter" debate as if he was wrong for doing what he did. So the fuck what?

Clearing it up, it's been way more than 48 hours, and they still didn't do anything. I don't think Kreayshawn is too bad, I just don't like her voice when rapping.

Miley Cyrus has an urban persona?

Cracka plz.

She thinks she has one, and i'm black btw, well super technically mixed but on the papers I identify as African American.

Isn't that what Banks rant was partially about?

Also lol, I'm not surprised iggy dismissed Q-Tip's tweet. Her acknowledging them in a positive way would have at least showed she's not completely oblivious.

Ya know....Everything would be cool if Iggy actually showed some respect for the culture and/or was a good artist. And she has done neither which is why she deserves all the hate she is currently getting.

She just doesn't get it. The worst part is she has way too much pride at this point to admit even an ounce of fault or misunderstanding. I have no sympathy at all for her.

Because unless he had a convo with her outside of twitter, what point did it serve trying to play hip hop educator to one rapper, out of the sea of them (publicly), while caping for the chick posting shit like, "satan in the form of mayonnaise?" It's fucking silly expelling all of this energy over Banks. When you add in Nas (i know...) saying that she didn't need lessons like that, it makes it look worse.

The thing that's confusing me here is if she didn't need to hear it via twitter then she didn't need to hear it at all. And that isn't even the case considering her fucking attitude and responses through out the whole thing. Maybe he was a bit condescending in assuming she needed to be taught ALL OF THAT but he definitely wasn't out of his place in stepping in and offering his two cents. Also he's hardly capping for Azealia Banks here even if he was that wouldn't take away from what he said and that Iggy still remains oblivious as all fuck.

Why, because she didn't bow down to Banks' bullshit? Could she have shown some empathy for some of the social stuff? Hell yes. The thing is, none of this even became an issue until the person that was beefing with her for two years, finally managed to start the new wave against her via social media, coasting off of the constant injustice against minorities. Hell, it's not like every rapper decided to speak on shit either. For some people, it's a hustle, period.

The girl has said some problematic shit throughout her career. Some of the ire is rightfully deserved. I still think the raccoon picture might lowkey be the worst, but people are doing the long reaching with some of this shit.

The Elvis thing was brought up to give some historical context to the appropriation discussion, not that it completely parallels this current situation with Iggy.

I do see the similarites but Elvis is just so far above pretty much anyone else brought up in the appropriation arguements like Vanilla Ice, Macklemore, and Iggy. Success does breed resentment, but I think with Elvis' case his success was built upon great performance, a HUGE catalog of music, and a shitload of genuine talent.

What the fuck is this shit? The amount of ignorance in this post is fucking astounding! Why do people with zero fucking knowledge on a subject choose to post absolutes about it as if they are facts. Then accuse someone else of thinking "black music started with Snoop and Wayne" you mention those teo because they are likely the only rappers you ever heard of.
