My first time watching Cowboy Bebop

Recently picking up an Amazon Edition of Cowboy Bebop, I was on the fence on whether I wanted to keep it or sell it. I posted in the Buy/Sell thread about selling it but since no one inquired I decided to keep it.

Having watched the first episode, I can feel that I'm going to really like this show. The action so far seems pretty good, the music is excellent, and I'm liking the main character Spike so far. I'm only up to episode 2 and awww,
poor doggy in a briefcase :(

Is anyone else watching this for the first time? I always heard great things about this show but never gave it any attention. I'm glad I did.

I am, on Hulu, but it's driving me insane because the ads there are ridiculous.

I'd buy it on iTunes but it's $54, which is even more expensive than the blu ray...but I prefer digital.

But yeah, the show is great, I think I'm on episode 5 or 6.
 
I'm jealous of you - my first time watching the series was pretty damn great. I still enjoy it, of course, but going in fresh was something else.

I'm debating picking up the Blu-ray.
 
I am not even going to say anything. I am going to sit back and enjoy the reactions.

My HD set comes in tomorrow so I am super excited.
 
A few months back I watched it with my GF for her first time and it was really fun seeing her react to everything. I just know you'll love it.
 
I watched through it back in college. Fucking great show. Lately I've actually been listening to the theme song Tank! a lot.

Same here. I saw the first two eps on Adult Swim the night before I moved into the dorms. One of my dorm mates also got into it, so we'd watch the latest episode every Sunday together. Good times!
 
I remember the first time watching it, I really didn't pay attention until I heard "Rush" during the fight scene in the first episode. After that I was hooked.

You're in for some great stuff.
 
I thought it was just "okay" the first time I watched the series, but after watching it a second time I got it.

Now it's one of my favourite series ever
 
I have it on VCD, I have the remix, and I just bought 2 copies of the Amazon edition. I'll never forget the first time I watched episode 5 on Adult Swim all those years ago. The hype is real. You're looking at some of the best this medium has to offer. GOAT god-tier anime.

It took me around 3 years to watch it in full but I really enjoyed. Why took me so long? I don't know, life always got on the way when watching it.

I bought the movie but have yet to watch it.
 
1. Gritty, trucker style cowboy + noir atmosphere
2. ...in space
3. ...with shootouts
4. ... and dogfights
5. ...and a main character that uses Jeet Kune Do
5. ...with an amazing jazz based soundtrack
6. ...that covers serious and wacky adventures

I can count on one hand the number of shows or movies that successfully combine as many things relevant to my interests. Cowboy Bebop is amazing, forever and ever amen.
 
This is cited by many as being a gateway anime and I have to say it definitely was one of mine but not only to anime but also to jazz. The soundtrack from this anime is amazing and continues to be one of my favorites many years after first hearing it. Enjoy the ride OP. After you're done watch the movie and then Samurai Champloo for more.

Man, I envy you watching CB for the first time. I loved CB but Samurai Champloo was more influential on me in terms of style and introducing me to what's now my favorite genre of music

Surprised nobody has mentioned Space Dandy yet. Most imaginative and creative anime series in years.

Watching Cowboy Bebop -> Samurai Champloo -> Space Dandy is a great ride.
 
Watched this for the first time not too long ago.

I would say if you are that impressed by the first two episodes, just wait until you reach episode 5. Your mind might be blown. Show didn't really hook me until then. Some of the episodes in the middle of the series I find get a bit overshadowed, too.
 
I've never seen it either, so I'm looking forward to cracking open my blu-ray too. I can't help being excited after seeing all of the praise.
 
I was showing it to my gf and she was really into it even though she hasn't really watched any anime other than sailor moon but for some reason around episode 15 she lost interest and like doesn't have the energy to watch more even though she liked it a lot. It's weird and now in halfway through a rewatch and I can't do anything hehe

But yeah it's really something else. Should get on Space Dandy though have been holding it off.
 
The crew aspect of the show is great, there's some awesome chemistry between the characters.

It also keeps the impulses under control that doom most anime series to niche status (the humor is a bit more character centered, the storylines don't constantly escalate, there's a commitment to not creating situations of dramatic irony or characters keeping secrets for the sake of prolonging a plot point).

It's definitely overrated, but still easily the most watchable anime series by the uninitiated.

Watching the show on Adult Swim was rad also. The episodic format really works well in small doses.

Edit: but the movie is ass. It doesn't hold up to movie standards in the way that the series exceeds television standards.

Y'know, I've been rewatching the series now the blu ray is out and I actually think Ballad of Fallen Angels is a low point. It's not bad by any means, but it lacks the heart most great Bebop episodes have. It feels like a bunch of film noir and John Woo film tropes strung together. Some of the lines are truly dire, especially in the Vicious fight at the end.

It has some of the most striking visuals in the series and some great music, though, so it's at least better than Boogie Woogie Feng Shui. That and My Funny Valentine are the biggest clunkers in the series.
 
I keep trying to figure out where CB fits in the "genre spectrum." I know people define it as a space western, but there's like one other thing I can think of that also fits in that space. It really is in its own space between sci-fi, western, noir, and Hong Kong crime drama.
