DDoS attacks are never particularly clever but launching one on what is by far the busiest day of the year for setting up new consoles is somewhat akin to doing a snow dance in the middle of Winter in Siberia and expecting people to be impressed when it snows.

What would have bern impressive was if the kids that launched the DDoS attack had the skill to keep the networks up and running throughout the busiest day.

I responded to people who talked about long jail sentences, or implied that these perpetrators should be abused or what have you (should die in a fire, be blasted to orbit, be wrecked in prisons etc).

Of course this is illegal but we are also a product of our environment. The internet is a rather hostile place that breeds this sort of silliness. Kids tend to do stupid things and when you have these tools available, and when you also have people calling them "basement dwelling virgins" after the initial twitter posts, it is not surprising that we have this result. Using such immature rhetoric only plays into this dynamic, where they can see themselves as some kind of a messed up justice league fighting the good fight against internet jocks and faceless corporations while gaining some lulz as well.

You can't stop these attacks without restricting the internet and that is not acceptable in my opinion. I also do not believe in harsh punishment, the American justice system is a failure and proof that giving long sentences for non-violent crimes is not the way to go. What we can do is ask for better business practices from these corporations and not give too much attention to troublemakers.

That is all, I'm going to watch some Seinfeld episodes and enjoy fest...Christmas.

I am not.
Both sides want to press their ideology against each other. And their zealots have no common sense.
Some people want to celebrate Christmas because it is festive and promote family time/tradition and consumerism.
Atheists with no common sense need to realize that as well, and stop ruining the festive and celebration spirit by demanding the government to put up Satanic stuff on display to "balance" out the Christian stuff. At least the Christmas stuff has a cheerful imagery rather than the "ironic" death and hell fire.
People don't want to see Satanic stuff while celebrating the holiday spirit with their kids.
The people who don't believe in a Christian God can bring the issue of separation of church and states during Jan 1 2015, let the other people with social acceptable behavior enjoy the festive event.

Edit: I am an agnostic btw. But I don't push my message out like both sides.
It is annoying to see the news about people with humbug attitude. Just ignore everything, and enjoy the drinks and family time.

I completely agree everybody should be free to choose the religion or lack thereof for his life, and obviously an agnostic country is a prerequisite.

Not a US citizen but I guess the people you mention in your post is pissed off because of that exactly.

To be frank we kind of mock your "In God we trust" thing in Europe. Just a little bit. That's absolutely unthinkable for a XXI century county. But hey, your country.

I'm getting sick of these kids. I mean, I didn't need XBLA or PSN today (LBP3's fine offline, and I only downloaded stuff off of the eShop/Steam), but this has to suck for poor kids this morning... Or at least, yanno, the ones who aren't the ones doing the ruining.

As for Finest Squad, I'm convinced it's just a Lizard Squad ploy. They exist solely to counter LS (Down to them being "Squads"), ask for donations to stop LS, and don't seem to be doing anything despite their claims; it's like they're just saying "We did it!" so no one else looks into it. Just seems like a reputation-boosting decoy to me. I'm hoping someone actually catches them sometime soon. I'm not in the "TRY THEM AS ADULTS!" boat, but at the same time, this behavior is definitely illegal, and something's gotta be done. I dunno. I just know that this just proves why Microsoft never should've even considered "Always Online..."

The complaining they want. The name calling, whether they admit it or not, will bother them but, it will only have the end result of them trying harder to screw the people calling them names.

The stick and stones thing has always been bullshit. No one takes verbal abuse and has zero negative reaction to it.
 
I don't know enough about ddos attacks, is this a case of Sony/MS not having their shit together or is there not much they can do? I assume they've gotta be pretty pissed about this situation.
