Exactly. But them doing it on Christmas day made their "attack" seem stronger than it probably was. They knew that literally millions of new customers were going to log in at the same time. I mean seriously, if your going to carry out a DDoS attack what better day to do it than on Chistmas day? A day that customers are actually doing most of the work?

Is it possible to buy an Xbox or ps4 and play immediately whatever game you get without connecting? Or are new owners totally sol until the services are back? If it worked at least they could game a bit while waiting for service to be restored.

Xbox Live is working for me again in a party doing GTA missions.
They don't do it for the lulz, it's a high profile marketing tactic they use to demonstrate the power and scale of their botnet network to other organizations interested in using it for cyberwarfare. Shit like this is pretty common and existed long before it targeted everyone's vidja games. I suspect they operate out of Russia based on the scale of the attack and some info I've gathered from people who work in the network security field. Most of their botnets are born from malware, of which 70℅ of the world's total malware is distributed through a handful of servers in Russia. In fact, any time one of these servers in Russia gets siezed , nearly 90% of the world's total spam and malware drops literally overnight. It's insane to imagine but the only thing that will make cunts like this go away would be for Russia to outlaw cybercrime like this. This will never happen however because organizations like this are actually legal there.

Yep. I mean the customers would probably knock the services offline for a limited time as well. There is a much lower threshold for the attackers to reach to boot offline. I agree that their attack is probably appearing stronger than it really is

I am the network manager of a small school district.. we were under a ddos attack a couple of weeks ago ..
now i KNOW .. its not the same thing.. I really do.. but FFS.. we were back up in 2 hours, and I certainly didn't have anywhere near the combined resources of sony and MS.
I just want to play DAI, and i know i don't need psn to do it.. but i would like to import my decisions from past games.. I really only need like 5 minutes of uptime.
If they aren't working together on this, then they are nutz.

You clearly know nothing about DDoS attacks if you think defending against large scale ones is that trivial. Server load balancing and blocking the largest sources is the best defense currently but even that takes time. An attack like this is caused by tens of thousands of infected machines worldwide, its not some small scale thing.

Yea I was able to use Netflix without being able to sign into psn today, just simply cancel out of psn login after you start Netflix and it will skip the login and take you to your Netflix account.
