LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

This is front page news all over the world so Lizard Squad definitely succeeded here, they gained notoriety and made a statement.

I don't have any sympathy for these corporations and their online practices (I am not going to purchase a console ever again) but I do feel bad for children and families who were/are not able to use these services during this extended period. A lot of people don't have too much free time and when this happens on Christmas day...damn.

There is no quick solution to these attacks and I don't believe giving the government more room for surveillance is the answer either - regardless how pissed off people are right now. There will always be youngsters who are looking to cause trouble and we just have to sort of suck it up instead of climbing down the ladder, because that ride will never stop until internet as we know it is gone completely. Of course it is a big problem when government sponsored groups target our infrastructure like happened in Estonia a few years ago, this is small potatoes in comparison. I worry that some elements/members in these groups are using these attacks as a calling card for something more serious in the future.

Community service in an elderly care center would suffice for most reptilian humanoids (unless they are actually 30+ year old adults, anything is possible I suppose), though we might see some unexpected results. "Old School squad" terrorizing young people after a year or two.

It doesn't seem like anyone is mentioning Nintendo being affected but I seem to have a weird issue with my new Wii U...

I have booted everything up and downloaded patches etc however I cannot for the life of me seem to link my Nintendo account to my existing Club Nintendo account. I have double and triple checked my passwords but whenever I try to link it via the store in the Wii U it tells me my password is incorrect.

IS this an issue with my Wii U account not seeing the Australian Club Nintendo account or is it something to do with all this DDoS nonsense?

Help me please Gaf, you're my only hope...

Plus I think if I read any more useless Nintendo website posts my brain might explode.

I'm not sure where your post went in the second half, but regarding 'nothing we can do so we should just suck it up', I'd say this kind of incident highlights a problem that needs solving and is a good reference to use to spur that no? This isn't something to just shrug shoulders at and sit on.

DDoS attacks are nearly impossible to deflect unless someone comes arrives at a new way of fighting it. Not really saying "give up", but there's not a solution right now.

Though its not easy. If they shore up their own servers to handle this, you just ddos a part of the network upstream outside their control.

London here. Ive managed to sign into PSN and access the store. Drive Clubs servers are now down though. Not sure if its related.

Forgive my ignorance here, not too tech savvy..

How do these guys have access to so many bots in order to cause this?

Im sure some GAFfer can explain. Cheers.

Lots of unpatched PCs our there with vulnerabilities that have long since been fixed. You cast a wide enough net you're gonna get a lot of bots.

How is it that some people can access the system fine, and others can't?, not sure about the technical details of a DDOS attack, but surely it would be down for everyone?

I've played War Thunder and Driveclub on my PS4 yesterday and today, without any issues, and spent a bit of time with SSOD yesterday afternoon on my xbox one, with no issues.

PSN was down? I had no idea. Was enjoying some Xmas B-ball, watching The Interview (thanks Google), and just finished watching Guardians of the Galaxy on Vudu.

Also, Lizard Squad? I thought this thing was a joke.

P.S. I'm drunk

Different region/server location I'd imagine.

I haven't looked through the thread but I couldn't play any games on my PS4 until I disconnected from the internet. WTF!? I was wondering why every game I tried would just sit there and load...usually it's just the online that's down, not the actual game

This post should answer your question, especially HaRyu's second quoted post. It should also be in the OP.
