LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

You have absolutely no clue. I've been one of those support people at a company suffering from a DDoS attack. The combined weight of being nearly powerless mixed with the expectations from management is crushing. The long, long hours sat there firefighting and working with upstream suppliers.

It doesn't matter that it's videogames, it could be anything else, it's a group of people preventing thousands to millions of others from using a product that they purchased, for their own personal amusement. You don't think that they deserve a smack in the mouth?

Aren't there counter-hackers trying to stave off Lizard Squad? Perhaps there are ways to support them. Being keyboard tough guys yelling into the air seems counterproductive.

So this the reason you wish violence on people? Sounds like every job ever to me. glad you had a career change.

And what does Microsoft and Sony do to prevent it? Create the infrastructure to defend against it but also hand down the cost to you? You ready for $50 a month online subscription fees? $100?
.

Like many have said before me: there's not much you can do to prevent a DDoS attack.

To be honest, if it's very hard to prevent DDoS attacks, I'm worried about the future about how people can get away with these attacks so easily.

That's why they should be made an example of. They should be dealt with the harshest penalty for their crime I think.

Edit: I saw that interview before. One member saying he wants to commit terrorist attacks against the government because he has to pay taxes and he can't pay for sex? Pretty much sums up their way of thinking I guess...

Sitting back going la la la doesn't bother me none isn't going to change anything either.

There needs to be some serious repercussions for this shit.

If any of Lizard Squad goes to jail, they will be facing the many horrors that lie inside the American prison system. I'm sure that would satisfy you, right?

Why isn't it preventable? So ANY online service in the world can be taken down like this? I refuse to believe that.

Yes. Any online service accepting connections can be vulnerable. It's just a matter of how much bandwidth a DDoS attack has to chew up before services begin shutting down. Even a site like google.com is vulnerable, but its infrastructure dwarfs PSN and XBL.

**edit

Cleverly designed server load balancing can also help, but only to an extent.

I understand that this is frustrating but you guys aren't acting any better than the Twitter trolls that harass people all the time with these threats.

Your calls to violence won't do shit, period, and people beating their chests about it is some internet tough guy nonsense. I guarantee you wouldn't do anything even if you had the ability.

You sound more tough guy than anyone you're arguing with you hypocrite.

And if Sony / Microsoft gave it's customers free stuff (which for the sake of this lets claim lizard squad kids all have xbl/PSN accounts) they'd be getting rewarded for the damage they did. They would stay winning and still laugh in your face for what they did. You don't win in this situation either way. This is all at a loss for everyone involved. There is no compensation for this and there shouldn't be. Go soak your head and cool off. That's your reward.

That's great. So the only incentive left is that these (already hard to justify) services are really not worth paying for.

Sure a website, but huge online services? It's crazy that is not preventable.

Why don't they take down banks and shit? :-D

Have you seen the hyperbolic anger in here? People who go to banking sites don't do that. People who play games are happy to provide laughable vitriol, though.

After following this thread and skimming info for the past two days, I'm pretty sure I know more about Marcel's hatred of violence and the American prison system than I do about Lizard Squad.

One guy is going to die for dissing a religion, when people all over the world and www make fun of all religions all the time, these people are hurting the bottom line of something that definitely exists and nobody does a thing about it. When does it become time to set an example, like a decade in prison?

If any of Lizard Squad goes to jail, they will be facing the many horrors that lie inside the American prison system. I'm sure that would satisfy you, right?

No because they'd be right back out on the streets again. Let them suffer another country's prison.

Hey, they made CNN. I am sure they feel so powerful and almighty hiding behind their computers.

Not sure if this much attention is good for them. Once they become a financial problem and they make mainstream news it could become real bad for them. I hope they get escalated on the FBI shit list.

You're deluding yourself if you think people wouldn't be even MORE angry if they couldn't get access to their money.

I don't care. I am paying for a service that I can't use. Were it me, I would go out of my way to apologize and show my customers that their business is appreciated. Not doing so could even drive more away.

If someone walked in to papa johns with a gun and shot up the place, you would seriously expect free pizza because of "poor you"?

Hopefully they'll sink some money into not having completely shit servers. This wouldn't be an issue at all if they stepped up their service and security.

This really has nothing to do with hardware or security. These "hackers" (I use the term loosely) are using a BotNet (thousands or more of PC's usually infected with malware) to send massive amounts of data to Sony's network. The packets usually all have spoofed IP addresses, making it impossible to determine exactly where they are originating from. It doesn't matter how many blades Sony spins up, if their outward facing internet connections are 100GB/s (just an example) these guys could be hitting them with easily double that amount of traffic. Not to mention the normal traffic from Christmas day.

As I said earlier there are services such as Cloudflare that tout being able to redirect the bad traffic.

To be honest, if it's very hard to prevent DDoS attacks, I'm worried about the future about how people can get away with these attacks so easily.

While it's hard to prevent them, it's not hard to hardening your network to help mitigate the damage. I typically recommend the following services to my clients;

https://www.blacklotus.net/
http://www.prolexic.com/

These guys rock when it comes to mitigating DDoS attacks and I've seen them in action several times. Perhaps it's time for both networks, hell, everyone conduct an audit and then hit these guys up.

Calling for violence is baseline tough guy bullshit, dude, which you did. Don't put your schoolyard fight logic on me.

If any of Lizard Squad goes to jail, they will be facing the many horrors that lie inside the American prison system. I'm sure that would satisfy you, right?

the irony of your antagonistic posts is lost on you i guess? or are you a harsh mirror showing us the error of approaching the conversation with angry confidence of our own world view?

You're deluding yourself if you think people wouldn't be even MORE angry if they couldn't get access to their money.

It's a stupid diversion in this conversation because banking organizations can afford better networking and engineers than game companies and publishers.
