Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

I see that a podcast, video and an article are all being posted in 45 minutes time. Which would be the best one to see first? Because I don't want any winners being spoiled.

The Podcast is the way to go as that is their discussion about how such-and-such game became GOTY in that category. After that I would read the article, and then finish off with the recap video.

So the real question here is... Was it really Alex's appartment with Danny's voice recorded seperatly but was it all shot in somebody's appartment in SF?

You know... the important questions here lol

I assumed it could be Alex's apartment because they don't show Danny during the scene.

Haven't finished the podcast yet, but that was a good bit of catharsis right there after what seemed to be their first exposure to Guilty Gear Xrd and accepting that, yes, it does look great.

It was funny how it seemed several were laughing at the suggestion when it was first brought up.

This game's gorgeous, even if you get hung up on the 2D/3D "gimmick."

It surprises me how South Park beat Wolfenstein in Most Surprising. NOBODY expected Wolfenstein to be good and it was incredible. South Park you could kinda tell could be good from the first big chunk of gameplay released.

Magic should be higher on any list any hearthstone, gj Brad Muir. Although I think DotP was really poorly received this year and MTGO is still awful, the paper game is one of the best designed games ever

Both could take it imo.

As far as im concerned PT was the best and biggest surprise this year. Not only a surprise, amazing looking and scary game was released, but the surprise of the game reveal as well. Really stupid it didn't win the category outright. I mean South Park you could tell it was gonna be good. The debut of it seemed exactly like the TV show.

I'd say so as well. On one hand, Wolfenstein had nothing really going for it. On the other, South Park had nearly everything going against it. A little bit of gameplay footage, especially from Obisidian Entertainment, isn't the best assurance for a game as a whole in the face of all the chaos behind its development. Despite that I enjoy this particular game, I could show off elements of the Vault of Glass or Crota's End raids of Destiny and people would be all over it without awareness to the issues with content, patch priorities, bugs, and RNG that are in the game. You just can't really know until you get the game in your hands and get through it.

Edit: P.T. I would have ultimately picked though. GB can get all hung over how 'scripted it was' (as if it was so obvious in-game what that would be /s) and I'm sure the surprise of it has worn off for a lot of people, but it truly was something that no one would expect from the announcement of it, the execution, and what it ultimately represented.

I had a lot of disagreements during the Best Looking portion that I was genuinely surprised they allowed a game they had next to no interest of be in the top 3 (Destiny). I mean, Drive Club we've covered, but Infamous was shot down immediately (having not actually been given a nomination) and Isolation was hung mainly over the 2 cutscenes of the game and the framerate in those, yet quite a few games that only had seemingly one notable thing or so to them were given greater attention.

The biggest surprise about South Park is that it actually came out. I was never worried about the gameplay because it always looked great when shown and Obsidian, glitches aside, has a good RPG track record.

I'm surprised Alien Isolation wasn't brought up at all, because I honestly would say that being as good as it is, and especially pulling off tension and suspense so well, was a bigger surprise than South Park.

It's nuts. It almost perfectly captures the little imperfections of 2D animation. They made it look better by making it look worse in a sense.

Like, I wouldn't be surprised if they faded out the shading on characters here and there to imitate coloring mistakes.

Very good choice for best looking game.

What it came down to, if I remember right, is that there have been very few good South Park games, and this one had delays and was an easy candidate to go into development hell/release limbo. Wolfenstein was expected to be just mediocre. The fact that South Park came out and ended up being an excellent game was more surprising than Wolfenstein ending up as great rather than mediocre/average.

Anime avatar.

I like it a lot, probably the most out of any GotY themes so far. There were some genuinely funny bits in there! I didn't even hear the
"Should we call Alex?" "Who?"
line at first.

Loved the intro to it.

Patricks List is decent! Not alot of AAA games and mostly small stuff. PT at #2 surprised me.

It'll be my first GB GotY. Should be fun~

Holy crap that Best Looking Game discussion was depressing.

They hit a lot of high points of the year, but the cuts they made getting to the final 3 were just painful to listen to. I'm just surprised how caviler the process of axing some of these choices were.

Opinions, am I right?

Jeff is going to kick himself when he realizes he forgot to bring up Driveclub in these debates.

I think they were just tired by the end of it. The "design by committee" approach usually just leaves people ready to agree to anything as long as that means ending the meeting.

Those lists are really, really well written. Some excellent variety, and I'm pleased as all heck to see Cara Ellison and Baz McMahon show up.

That video is... something.

Wolfenstein has had, at worst, one mediocre game. South Park has had, at best, one mediocre game.

I like how almost every criticism Brad levied at Mario Kart for Best Looking could be thrown back at his GTA arguments. And no one did! Brad cannot be stopped.

It certainly is pretty clunky and bad looking. But it has good points like the voice acting and the memorable music. The game has heart, but some people can just put it on the "so bad its good" category which sells the game's story and characters short.

But it's not "so bad it's good." Parts of it are really good, while other parts are really bad. It's not like, wow, I can barely aim my gun, this is so avant garde--the combat just sucks.

They're very clear about why they do these awards and how many shits they give if others don't like it. It's very refreshing.

Oh boy that first video was great, looking forward to the rest of them. Is there a gif yet of the moments after Dan puts in the cartridge?
