The GameSpot PowerBlock is now Cancelled and Giant Bomb has been asked to Stop streaming

I used to love following Grubb and his endeavors but he really showed his ass with the Mercante stuff. I always took him as someone that existed outside that "gaming journo bubble" but it turns out he leaned hard into that stuff. So I guess you get what you get?

As someone who followed the whole Gamespot fiasco and listened to Jeff & Ryan back when it was Arrow Pointing Down, I'm honestly surprised the site is still around. I have nothing against the people there now and wish them well, but when the Nextlander crew left, I stopped paying attention to GB. I subbed to their thing and Gerstman's as soon as they went indie and have been listening to both of their podcasts since.

I miss Ryan Davis.

Giant Bomb was genuinely great for a period of time there after Ryan passed. Once Ben and Abby came on board though, it was a slow death. The pandemic only accelerated it.

GB should've just folded with Brad & Vinny left and Jeff went solo. Absolutely no one left there carrying what the brand was. I still like Ryckert but he's not enough and pretty sure his podcast outside GB does better #s than anything GB.

RIP Ryan
RIP Big Live Live Show Live
RIP late-aughts E3 pressers
this its gb in name only

Echos of the stuff gerstman & others have talked about since leaving. Be interesting to see what they do with all the OG "premium" content if they dont just nuke it all.
that og premium and extra life stuff is gold i hope we do not lose it to the internet black hole.

In theory it's not a bad idea, instead of random streams, have a fixed daily streaming schedule and have the content on vod for people who want to watch it later.
agreed. but it's not the kinda arrangement that's gonna inject some life in franchises already struggling. it's more a deck chair re-arranging?...

I've literally stopped caring. Game journalism just seems like a thing of the past now and barely even seems relevant anymore. Fuck it.
1000% this. It's dead career/industry, straight up. The internet and YouTube have empowered publishers to take their messaging, reveals and interviews directly to players. Hell, independent streams get more attention from pubs these days. No one is paying outlets for reviews anymore, shit is all free on YT. The biggest "personalities" in gaming now don't have any corporate studios or producers - they're just nerds with $1000 in streaming equipment and a decent PC.

The Oblivion shadow drop this week? 10-12 years ago that would've been at E3, Todd would've been on interviews with half a dozen outlets, the whole shebang. Instead we got a slick hour-long video directly from Bethesda with interviews, gameplay and feature reveals. Journalists who?

Instead of watching streamers how about playing some videogames?

You knew here? We don't play games, we bitch about them. Or bitch about the people streaming them. Or bitch about the people reviewing them.

Good riddance. I'm sorry but Giantbomb only went downhill since Ryan's passing and they leaned more and more into their biases and often times had completely false or misleading information in the bombcasts. I loved what they once had, Vinny was still great all the way through their history though.
i used to agree but i liked drew and dan and jason its when they got abby that i started to fall off

It died with RD. Sad. It was really great back then. I listened religiously and had a premium sub. Then at some point after this everyone seemingly turned on Gerstmann and everyone was just bitter. Then they all went woke when it was fashionable to do so and I tapped out. I will still listen to Gerstmann's solo show here and there and he is nothing if not consistent with his terrible game opinions.

same last week of october 08 bombcast is gold from dread space to fallout3.

you didn't know, a month and a half ago Gamespot and Giantbomb combined to have a 5 hour long stream section everyday where the shows of both websites would go live. It was streamed on all channels of both giantbomb and gamespot.

they tried something similar with a live review show back when ryan was alive it did not last a month.

i think the slow death started when we found out they were not going back to the office after covid was more or less done.

Crazy GB still exists these days....they are from another era, like they guys from Easy Allies.

Are they even still around?

Like many others here, I loved GiantBomb but it seem to quickly go down hill at certain points for different people. I know some feel when Ryan Davis died that was the start of things failing, but for me it was that fucking cuck Patrick Klepic joining. He made me skip so many videos and streams that it started to become "I'll wait a few days for shows or videos" to then weeks and months.
Of course other members were completely against my tastes, but he really ruined it for me.

Ryan dying was really awful, not even the fact it was his wedding, just overall. The crew did try and work through it, but it did seem like it was too much for some of them (to be clear, not in a attacking way, more of a sympathetic way).

Then most of the origionals left and it became GiantBomb in name only (even though I hadnt watched anything of theirs in years). On a happier note, I do still randomly watch their long play through of Deadly Premonition.

For me I would say that it really started to go downhill once the east west split happened. Patrick made me roll my eyes often, but he didn't bother me all that much. After GOTY 2016 though I felt a lot of resentment towards the site as a whole.

I like a good gaming podcast and giant bomb use to have that. But then Abby wouldn't shut up in that game of the year stream.

Some shit is going down. They recorded an episode today, it was up on the podcast apps and YT for a little bit then got taken down.

From what I've read elsewhere, Dan and co talked about the new rules and guidelines they've been given by the new Fandom ownership, the new ownership wants to make the show more PG friendly and limit their usage of casual profanity like 'fuck' etc in the episodes.

Based on other things and some comments they've been posting on socials, looks like either GB is not gonna be around for long or some of the key staff are about to leave. Dan, Jeff, Mike Minnoti etc are all apparently following a newly created brand on Instagram, I forget the name right now but it reads like a video game podcast / patreon kind of name.

What's the rumored new brand?

They're all following a new Instagram account called "Party Mode Games".

I'm watching an archive of the episode someone was able to make and they pretty relentlessly tear into the guidelines in the first 10 minutes. I can see why Fandom would have the episode pulled. The new management wants to keep the show PG friendly, only one 'fuck' allowed per episode, no sexually suggestive or explicit comments etc.

Safe to say, I don't think Giantbomb, or at least this iteration of it, is going to last much longer.

I think advertisers anger must have to do with this flop as well , maybe they hated grubb going anti-israel on stream as well as other ways he's not advertiser friendly. The gamespot shows are real high production work, but giantbomb has gone as cheap as possible. Just speculating Of Course. But It must have to do with the POW block not being advertisement friendly and too much effort for the few viewers.
Oh they get political and that direction. Yeah there is a reason I ditched game sites in the early to mid 2010s. Before 2014 it was only about the games then injecting identity politics and other bullshit.

A lot of people say Giant Bomb died when Ryan did. Could someone please elaborate on this opinion because I would like to know everyone else's thoughts. In my opinion, it died when Abby and Ben joined or when the team was physically split.

It died twice.

Once with Ryan and then with the split.

The split just broke the whole vibe of a group of guys who enjoy hanging out and playing games as it was clear that some of them wanted to be elsewhere.

GBeast was fucking awesome though. It brought back Alex in all his cranky-ness, and is mostly where Dan shined. Dan, Vinny and Alex were probably the best team in the GB era since the OG 4.

Would have been better if they'd stayed in the West together. Mind you after the split I started listening less and less and pretty much stopped once Ben and Abby joined.

Alex is just a depressed guy so I don't find him very enjoyable to listen to.

Jeff was 'the star' of Giant Bomb, but I think the chemistry between Ryan and Jeff was the foundation upon which everything else rested. Both in the sense that there seemed to be genuine friendship between them, and in terms of their compatibility when making content.

I think we got a different Jeff without Ryan, because Jeff was the most improved by Ryan. He could still do the job after Ryan died, but the joy was largely gone for him I think.

Giant Bomb and everything related (Nextlander, Gerstmann etc.) to it is not relevant anymore. Giant Bomb itself has been a walking zombie for over 10 years.

It's about fucking time. Been so disgusted seeing these idiots parading around in it's corpse, and calling themselves giant bomb.

I know Ryan and him got along, but Patrick was really actually the downfall of the site, because he was one of the assholes who was all chummy with with Zoe Quinn.

Thank you for explaining. Jeff was accused of being cynical a lot. Do you think Ryan's more positive attitude helped Jeff's attitude? I still watch Jeff's show from time to time and he seems better than he used to be in that respect but I'm not totally sure. He got married and had kids which can change a lot of stuff.

Yeah I think so. Ryan could be a dick too but it always seemed good natured, which I think helped Jeff remain in that frame of mind when it perhaps doesn't come as naturally to him (it doesn't to me either).

Ryan passing away was the beginning of the end. When Jason and Dan came on, it was still very good. GB East was also very good when it was Vinny, Alex, and Dan. I didn't mind Austin. Ben was a major downgrade. Abby was the worst. That 1st GOTY where even Brad started almost yelling at her was enough for me.

Nextlander is alright when they talk about games, as soon as they start talking politics, I am out. Jeff's show, I catch here and there. I really wish he had someone to bounce shit off though. His ranking of Nintendo game series is pretty good.

Two all time favorite Ryan moments: him chastising Will Smith for how he pronounced executable and the story about the cake, that his then fiancé bought him for his birthday. He always wanted to know what it was like to sit on a cake naked, so she fulfilled that fantasy for him. :messenger_beaming:

Man I miss that fat bastard.

I don't think Giantbomb ever reached its true potential, even in its inception I thought Gerstmann and the gang were funnier on Gamespot. Then Ryan Davis (RIP) passed and the ship started sinking. The industry has changed a lot and gaming news is not what it use to be, it really is end of an era. I predict IGN, Gamespot, will not be here in the next 5-10years.
