The Order: 1886 trailer - "Silent Night"

This wasn't that great of a trailer. There's no menace or tension. They way they used the song was fantastic, but the footage wasn't there to back it up. The more I see of this game, the more worried I get. I'm really hoping they are just holding back and there's so much more in the full game, but I'm doubtful.

Wow that's great news. Kinda random tho, looking to his previous works he doesn't seem the person to work on something like this. But then again he was the writer on John Adams, which makes him perfect for job imo. With him on board (probably has the highest credentials of any writer currently working on a game), people here wouldn't dare to concern troll the story right.... right?

has any good stuff ever come about from "high profile writers" getting involved in games? COD Ghosts was written by the dude who did Traffic and that was fucking awful. Good t.v. or movie writers don't always translate to good video game writing, but I do have high hopes for the order cause everything I've seen looks awesome and well realized.

It's not so much the fault of writers as is the directors, designers, animators, and art direction. It's the job of a team. No one does The Lord of the Rings like Peter Jackson or Titanic like James Cameron. No one does games like Shadow of the Colossus like Ueda. You get the point...

I just don't get why you would expect to see any light moments in marketing materials for a serious game. Those sorts of things are best save for when someone is actually playing so that they can contrast more strongly with a bleak setting. No one knew TLoU was going to have funny moments before it came out. That game dragged you through a depressing atmosphere until an odd joke popped up, making it all the more effective. Putting something like that in this trailer would ruin the atmosphere they were going for and wouldpull any impact away from that moment in the game.

The TLOU previews weren't really about mushroom men, they were about highlighting the brutality of a broken-down society, paternal instincts, etc. This The Order preview is about fashionable men of the 19th century fighting werewolves while unfitting music plays. They're not really comparable.

Also, why are mustaches something that makes the game seem more ridiculous to you? It was the actual style of the time for men during this period.

Ah yes, the period of time when we flew in giant airships and fought unholy beasts. I remember it well from history class.

That trailer made me cringe. It's like...cliched? Like The Age of Ultron trailer did the same thing, but did it better because the song actually fits thematically with the context the trailer provided..here its' like...'Silent night..PUNCH PUNCH...Holy night..NECK SNAP...all is bright..BANG BANG'.

Well ok that last one fit but still..that's a trailer that made me cringe pretty hard.

(Edit-I should clarify that the first time I tried watching it, I just cringed out of it and didn't watch it again until today)

I just hope that The Order isn't like the first 2 hours of The Last Of Us.
Started great but it wasn't enough gameplay for my liking in the first two hours.
I actually stopped playing and only picked it up again because people told me it would get better. And it did and it became my game of the forvever, thats how much I loved the last 15 hours.
But what I've seen of The Order so far looks more like the first two hours of TLoU than the last 15 hours.

It's very difficult to post something that can't be seen as an "ad hominem" attack when some people are so deserving of ridicule...

I hope there's some substance to the more tension fraught survival horror esque sequences they've teased a few times. A good blend of that, some solid shooting and a decent story would hopefully make for a nicely paced campaign.

Fingers crossed they're keen on playing their cards close to their chests rather than what they've shown being pretty much all the game has to offer.

Games these days do tend to spoil a lot of their own surprises with their marketing (Ubi stuff especially), so would like to give Ready At Dawn the benefit of the doubt for now...

Repurposing a song can be well if the song itself happens to match the theme of the thing it's repurposed for. In this case I don't think the order 1886 has anything to do with the song. A great example of repurposing a song to fit the theme, tone and visual provided is this.

Only with that clip they've taken a sea shanty & slowed it down, adding nothing to it, whereas in the Order clip they've given Silent Night an edge I've never heard it have, while still being sung traditionally.

It's a subjective thing tho - for me the juxtaposition is well made, for you it isn't. I disagree that the song needs to have any immediate relevance to the imagery as well - part of the power of the contrast is in the welcoming warmth of the familar hymn and time of year.

If it had been done at a time of year the hymn wasn't appropriate I'd agree.

When I enter a thread for the order I expect bizarre criticisms founded on what we have not seen, but this last page really blew me away. Now the Order is being criticised for not being a comedy?
Someone needs to update this gif by changing "NeoGAF" to "The Order Thread." :P

Man that was a good trailer. Just bought Bloodborne and Type-0 with fantasy football winnings...should have done this instead of FF. Probably just add it to the order lol going to be an expensive year!

I'm saying they're trying to use A-grade presentation for B-grade material. Unless they turn out to be master storytellers, that's not likely to make for a great story. I haven't seen any reason so far to think that there's a deeper meaning to the Mustache Bros vs. Lycanthropes conflict than the surface one.

Alan Moore is hardly an example of a humorless writer. In any case, I'd be impressed if the game ended up evincing half of his storytelling skill.

Then you either haven't looked very hard or are incapable of the most basic levels of comprehension. Go watch the story trailer again.

Was Gears of War ever criticized of not having comedy when the famous trailer accompanied with Mad World was released? After all, it had bulky men with lipbeards, guns with chainsaws, and insectoid monsters.

What are you worried about? That you won't like it? I'm sure there's loads of games that you don't like. So don't worry, I'm sure others will like the game it even if you don't.

Not all stories need to have comedic elements, but it's a good idea to have some if your story is about silly things.

So true I think we need more of this..

And the aim for the team of more of this is way off base..

I mean I have seen no dance numbers yet and I am really worried that we will not get a moonlit duet from Galahad and Ise!

Great song choice for the theme and style of this game, however the trailer came up short for me. Far better scenes they could have used.

Looking forward to the game though.

Not really. People have been doing this sort of juxtaposition of sombre/violent/dramatic visuals cut to warm/virtuous melodies given a cold twist for a long time now. When I saw it was Silent Night, and knowing what the game is going to be like, I knew exactly how this trailer was going to play out.

Looks nice though.

Oh for sure, it still is a bit peculiar. I suppose death is considered the ultimate form of silence. I didn't feel it hear to be honest, but I liked the content of the trailer. Game is looking pretty good all things told.

Well that's because the "narrative" that many have taken with this game is to crap on it every chance they get.

If Halo 5 got a similar trailer the majority would be screaming how great it was.

Ha probably. Even though halo 4's story was pure shite.unless you were a halo lore nerd.

That was a really weak trailer. I was hoping this would be the thing to finally sell me on the game.

"That's it?" Was my response.

Good trailer, though the 15-minute b-roll footage already convinced me to check out the game day one. I'm really, really intrigued.

Felt similar to me. Picking silent night is so random

Am I the only one who thinks this started off as a Vita title?

Something about how confined the enviroments seem and the fact that is RaD

Usually I reply sarcastically to these "Am I the only one...." but this assertion that The Order started out on vita is so random and unfounded in logic and evidence that yes I actually do think you are the only person who thinks that.

Another awesome 1886 thread. Seriously, you can't make this shit up.

Now hopefully RAD gives us a New Year's-themed trailer.

Yeah this is my biggest issue with what we've seen of the story so far....they haven't shown it to be about anything besides the actual surface premise of barking orders at one another while fighting rebels and werewolves. It may be cool as a setting, but they haven't shown me anything to care about-or even understand-any of the characters. They've said some vague things about how thematically the order have to watch everyone they care about grow old while they don't, but as of right now that sounds like a bit of more they've come up with and havent actually shown or hinted at that in any of the actual game footage. Thus far the game literally seems to be about fighting people, and that's not interesting.

The trailer was released on Christmas day. Not at all random.
Well, random in the sense that it doesn't fit to the scenes we saw.

In age of ultron the song is actually referenced, and in Dishonored it fit thematically. The song choice would have felt less weird if the characters were actually fighting werewolves at Christmas night.

Turn the clock back six months and reverse that statement. Perhaps they should tell us the whole story and have done with it. I mean, they do that with every other game, don't they?

And yeah, it's all about 'fighting people', so if I were you I'd pass on this and buy something a little less generic.

I wonder if it's a culture thing - to me it fits perfectly. It's a jarring juxtaposition to the on-screen action, and in all honesty (being UK based), although some have rightly pointed out that it specifically references the Nativity, the majority of the country are quite secular - to us it's really just a childhood Christmas song. If you get me.

Obviously I don't speak for the entirety of the UK*.

Jesus, why so defensive? Something less generic? My favorite games are The Last of Us, Half Life 2, MGS3, and RE4. No need to try and insult me because I am critiquing the marketing of an unreleased game. How is a story about fighting people anything but generic? And for the record I love the art style and setting, but I am hoping for something intellectual in the story itself as that is the major selling point of the game according to the developers.

And go watch trailers and footage for The Last of Us. Those did a fantastic job of setting up character and theme without spoiling anything.

I suggest you go back and read the TLOU trailer threads. It'll raise a few eyebrows.
