Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

And how many hours is that until it gets good?
This is like FF13 again; telling me that makes me not want to play it.

And what happens then anyway? One more raid to grind?
I swear Destiny fans are clinically insane.

Not a fan, played it, sure, just going on numbers. If Brad, Jeff and a 3rd got that far, it'd have traction. Having 3 that'd have sunk in the time and play it to around 28, it'd be undeniably top 10 from the site.

A+ advice, will read again. Last year while my parents were on a Christmas cruise, I painted my brother's old room as a sort of surprise gift to my dad, and bombcast GOTY + old radiolab episodes were my jam. Unfortunately (or not?), rooms don't need painting all that often, but cooking is also one of my favorite times to chow down on podcasts.

Now, uh, are the clips of the DCK:TF soundtrack representative of the entire game? If not, can someone post a link to their favorite track(s) from the game? Because honestly, I was with the rest of the duders on this. Most of the tracks sampled just sounded, well, not good in the clips, and for the rest, the best I could say is that they reminded me of Donkey Kong Country (and I never had any real affinity for DKC's soundtrack. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't something that I would start humming to myself).

DKC has a forgettable soundtrack? I beg to differ. Its the best soundtrack on any SNES game imho.

It would depend who that third person sided with, if they sided with Brad then there's a possibility it would break top 10 but if they sided with Jeff then that would be another person who has experienced all the content and still doesn't have a high opinion of the game.

I'm disappointed in the Most Disappointed category. At some point, they used the argument that Destiny is a better game than Watch Dogs, which is irrelevant to the category. I don't know about other people, but I saw Watch Dogs's mediocrity from a mile away. The very first video they showed of it back in 2012 was the only was to impress me. Everything after that put that game on a downward slope for me. I wasn't disappointed when the game came out; I was vindicated.

Destiny, on the other hand, had everyone on board. Up until launch, it was "Borderlands made by the Halo guys", which was a very positive thing to say about it. When it was released, we all saw how we had been deceived this whole time.

Anyways, thank you Dan for fighting for Tropical Freeze. I cannot believe they gave the Best Music award to a game with only one fucking track, no matter how good it is. Jesus.

It's totally gonna be #10. There's not enough good games this year.

There certainly are more than 10 games which 2 or more of them prefer over Destiny.
Mordor, Bayo, Shovel Knight, COD, Mario Kart, Dark Souls 2, South Park, Jazzpunk, Sunset Overdrive, Far Cry 4, Dragon Age, D4, Divinity OS, Valiant Hearts, Wolfenstein, ...

I'm not surprised if Destiny makes no. 10, but it isn't a safe bet.

Smash should have won it by default. the sheer amount and care gone into that soundtrack is astonishing.

And the argument that it's not new music doesn't really fly when they gave the award to ALBW last year. Not that there is ever any consistency when it comes to these things.

I think it's just that Dan is the only one who likes Smash, and played a lot of the game. So the others haven't really heard the soundtrack that much. It happens.

Dan is the best. Dude has a child like innocence to him. Him being oblivious to why
Kojima is a monster
for the Ground Zeroes ending was great. His perspective is refreshing.

I've not read any of this topic for fear of spoilers of the podcast.

Does anyone have a timestamp for when they stop talking about story in day 2? I thought I'd be fine but I want to finish wolf among us, and the fall sounds cool - I've turned it off when Vinny has just said "I can spoil it if you want"

He knew what was going at the end of ground zeros, he just had a different view on it.

Edit: woops, too late :)

I disagree. I've done the endgame stuff in Destiny and sunk many hours into it and it's still not in my top 10 games of 2014. I haven't even played Bayonetta 2 and some other acclaimed games yet, and still Destiny is not in my top 10.

In my opinion there are more than enough games that are better than Destiny in 2014. I say this as a person who doesn't even have an intense hatred for that game, in fact there's lots of moments I enjoyed in Destiny. Top 10 though? Nah.

Somebody tell me what the big crazy turn is in Bravely Default, I'm never going to play it again.

EDIT: This post on our own forums (!) sums it up thoroughly. Wow, glad I put that game down.

That doesn't even get into how the writing collapses into a hole of continuity errors the likes in which I have never seen. The last part of the game feels like they stitched together a patchwork of scenes in order to rush the game out on time.

To be fair, at that point in the game, you're party is well equipped and overlevelled with to steamroll all the
boss rematches
. It's all in the matter of fact turning off random encounters and making a beeline to the bosses.

Not that I'm completely absolving the absolute laziness of the second half of the game, though.

That you can rush through the game in a few hours so you don't have to experience it isn't a point in its favor. You might as well stop playing, because the story certainly isn't worth seeing, not unless you want to laugh at it.

Man I'm so bummed that Crossy Road got cut from the Shorties.

I totally respect the 3 titles that made it in and have to simply chalk it up as being a crowded list of quality titles. Heck, Hitman GO landed just outside my personal GOTY Top 10 (Honorable Mentions), and watching my wife fall down a serious Threes rabbit hole this year made its spot at #1 a no-brainer.

But man. Crossy Road. It's the most addicted I've been to an iOS game since 10000000. I think Jeff brought up a good point too about the viability of Crossy Road in the mobile setting vs. Hitman. In the end it was just a preference thing, but he essentially said that he preferred short, arcade bursts when playing mobile out in public (waiting in line at Starbucks, sitting at the airport, etc.). I tend to agree with him in that when I'm just looking for a quick shot, I want to play something fast & reflexive, more akin to the quarter-munching arcade machines of old.

Oh well, at least they talked up Crossy Road well enough. Seemed like most actually wanted it on the list until Alex/Patrick filibustered with their personal choices. But I know by now that it's all part of the random fun in GB's GOTY awards (hello, Best Looking Game winner).

I think you're in trouble, Myggen.

Is there a full list/timestamp of the games they spoil in Best Story? I just played through Broken Age and The Fall so I wouldn't get spoiled, but I want to make sure there isn't anything else I need to try and race through, specifically Valiant Hearts.

Yeah, you're right. I stopped playing after getting the not-true ending. Frankly, I would have been glad if the game ended right there but the prospect of
going to 2 more parallel worlds
didn't sound attractive to even me at that point.

On the plus side, I did find some value in grinding my party to max level. It didn't take too long with the right job abilities and messing around with the various OP party builds found online was pretty fun.

I'm looking forward to Bravely Second, just the on hope that the developers rectify their mistakes and give us more of the same but better.
