LIZARD SQUAD is Back. Planning XBL Attack. "Biggest attack yet". [UP: XBL/PSN Down]

true, and good point. But what if it wasn't on Sony's side, how would you know otherwise (unless you're a networking professional of course). Sometimes when my internet is out my first instinct isn't to call COMCAST to get it working. I check my router, modem, connections, etc. And if all is okay, then I call em. Try any and all of the possible solutions.

Well, I checked my PS4, and the Internet on it works fine. It's PSN that's not working. And it's not a single case. Seems pretty enough to me. Plus I pay for the service to work, it's not like free PSN times anymore, and the company should take more responsibility.

I contacted the Ask Playstation twitter feed. They said it's due to Sony still attempting to bring all PSN facilities back online. Without the MTU change, I get connection timeout errors. With the MTU change I get a message that states I didn't connect in time. I've reset my router, my cable modem, and my PS4 numerous times. Nothing fixes it. I can access the PSN webstore though.

Yeah, I can sign in, but the what's new tab cannot load, nor can I play any online games or see leaderboards. It is flat out PSN that is screwed up.

Was that Sony's advice? It's like reinstalling windows, if a single application doesn't work.
The problem is localized already, it's not that they need all those diagnostics anymore.

You claimed people said it was perfect. No one is saying that. So perhaps drop the hyperbole. Fact of the matter is that XBL recovered much faster. It still has issues. PSN required a couple days more to finally start coming up and yet still is having issues. I still can't connect to PSN on my PS4, yet I can connect to it on the web store. XBL is better, imo. If you read that and translate it into "XBL is perfect", then you got issues.

Reduces packet size. Some people think it works because Sony is purposely blocking packet sizes of a certain size and above due to how the attacks occurred.

There were people who could log in to PSN around the same time as live, just not everyone same as now.

Live is taking just as long to fully recover, sorry but it is.

sorry to hear to it's still not working for you and others. I don't know what else SONY can do to make their network better. I mean what is the general problem with PSN? I ask because I'm no expert. A lot people have opinions, but are they "in the know"? Has a former or current employee come out and detailed what's wrong with PSN as a whole?

That's the advice given when you can't connect to PSN and then hit Suggestions instead of trying again.

*edit* Unless you mean the packet size work-around. I've never seen Sony suggest that, and I doubt they would since it would be bad long-term.

Finally able to log in for the first time and activate my psn account on my ps4 that I've had since xmas! I'm in Chicago and I didn't change any mtu or any other settings. So great to finally download these psn games I been buying for a year lol.

Well, it's like my fifth time of disappointment in Sony's support and they lack of feedback.
Trying to contact them via e-mail just gets you ignored. And the way they fix some problems just doesn't fix anything in fact (like sending you new ps store items, instead of fixing those, which caused errors, so the error still exist).
And like I said, you shouldn't reset your console and re-download 400GB of data just because of someone's incompetency (Sony side again).

Is there no other solution to the NW-31194-8 error other than the MTU thing? Haven't been able to connect to PSN since the whole thing started.

MTU change works, folks. Just changed mine to 1473.

Here are the steps, in case you want to:

1. Go to settings.

2. Go to Network.

3. Set up Internet Connection.

4. Choose wifi or LAN, whatever you use.

5. Choose CUSTOM.

6. IP Address - Automatic

7. DCHP - Do Not Specify

8. DNS - Automatic

9. MTU Settings - MANUAL

10. It will be set to 1500 BY DEFAULT. Click that, change it to 1473. Press R2.

11. Click Next.

12. Proxy - Do Not Use

Done!

Fucking hell Sony. If you didn't have the better hardware I'd have dropped you into the turd pile you belong with your network bullshit.

Multiple hacks and multiple outages. At exactly what point does Sony get off it's ass and do something real about it all.

BTW, thanks to you guys for the MTU work-around.. it worked for me at 1473.

I wonder how many of the people who are severely affected by this are game sharing and have screwed themselves over by doing so?

wat.

Well I'll be damned. I decided to switch users to my Japanese account and then logged out of that and it took me back to my main with PSN fully restored. I just tested The Crew and am in. Can't believe that worked.

Still down for me in the UK, hasn't been up since Christmas morning. What's dumb is all I want to do is patch assassins creed unity.

I bought my niece and nephew one, they've been playing since Christmas morning.

I've fully downloaded and patched:

Ac4
Ac Unity
Fifa 15
Zoo Tycoon
Worms

I've also installed patches for Lego Batman , Minecraft and a few other odds and ends.
that's over 100gb of downloads.

we've not had any issues with it until midnight hits then it goes a bit crazy when trying to boot up games.
There must be quite a lot of variables that affect how you are connecting and which data centre you end up with.

Maybe try changing your DNS settings to google or open DNS and make sure your router is 100% configured correctly

My feelings on the situation:

Am I annoyed? Oh hell yes.

Will I trade in my PS4 for an Xbox One or PC? Absolutely not.

I still like my PS4 regardless of whether PSN is complete wank or not. These kinds of things just happen, and even if Sony are taking longer to fix the issue than Microsoft, it'll be working again eventually. Yes, it is stupid that Sony are taking this long to fix it, but I honestly can't be bothered to go through the trouble of trading my system in for one that I have no interest in because the online is down. That's just me at least, and at the end of the day, I bought a PS4 because I wanted a PS4 specifically.

People keep saying live is perfect and my Nephew and his mates were getting kicked all day yesterday.

It's not perfect.
Who's saying live is perfect? It was rammed the entire time PSN was down over the holidays. It was partially up, but not even remotely worth acknowledging.

Tag seems apt.

You can do that. Make sure the connect to internet box is checked and then press options on AC and hit check for updates. That still worked for most people including me.
Yeah, that should work indeed. Update patches doesnt require a PSN account, at least it wasnt like that on PS3.

There hasnt been multiply of hacks (at least from what we know), if you're referring to PSN.

Live has been giving me troubles the last few days now. Can't get a party chat going and it says none of my friends are online when they clearly are.

Who's saying live is perfect? It was rammed the entire time PSN was down over the holidays. It was partially up, but not even remotely worth acknowledging.

A lot of posters from this thread were saying that Live was perfect 1 and 2 days ago while passive agressive complaining in this thread.

This isn't the first time Lizard Squad has attacked PSN, nor is it the first serious outage Sony have had since Ps4 launched.
DDOS isn't a hack though. People keep saying these guys clearly aren't hackers, but if they gained illegal access to the servers people are claiming were used for these attacks, that did involve some hacker know-how.

Who?

pendant.

so DDOS doesn't count andIf they had been hacked and tips had gone down then that is A-OK in your book?

DDOS is not hacking you can't get sensitive information from DDOSing. Any company get get DDOSed easily (unless you have huge server farms like amazon, google, ect. where they can migrate traffic). MS have been able to migrate traffic much easier then Sony because they have azure. Sony dont that the luxury and for them to get something like azure to just combat DDOS would be a major waste. They should be improving PSN a ton but not for protection against DDOS.

It shouldn't have to be from the user side. If 1500 MTU was good before the attack, and it should be because its standard, then if things are actually working correctly people shouldn't have to change it. This is still a Sony issue.

Of course it is a Sony issue. But it seems the functionality is slowly being restored and if people who still can't get it to work want to connect as soon as possible, this is a workaround for the time being. The other options are to wait or return the console.

To those of you that can't get online with the MTU fix.....

I had the same problem. It would let me finally log in but nothing else, would keep getting disconnected. I then booted into safe mode and restored default settings (option 4). When you restart it goes through quick Internet settings again but it doesn't leave the MTU change in place. So before logging into psn again. Go back into your network settings and change the MTU to 1473 again.

All has worked for me since. Was able to get updates and apps as well as download The Last of Us

Loads here saying it was up and perfect 24 hours after attack started, in this very thread.

Dreamers it appears.

Have you only just joined this thread? If not, you appear to have missed a lot.

So does anyone know when we will be able to redeem our free digital download for one of those four games?

Yes Sony explained that fully on page 2305 of their dossier they released on exactly what they have been doing minute by minute since the attack.

.

It's most likely there are more reported users saying XBL has been running fine. I wish I could say the same on my end but yesterday it was not running as normal. PSN on the other hand has been a hit and miss. Today it seems more stable but that could change later. Reporting is mixed but I believe XBL is more stable currently.

This worked for me. Kudos.

What the heck is MTU for the non-network savvy?

A simple 'no' would have been fine.

Maximum Transmission Unit.

Think of it like a pipe. By adjusting the MTU value, the pipe gets thinner, allowing less to travel through it. Usually, this would be a bad thing, but in this case, a smaller MTU means packets of data that can be sent and received are smaller. It seems Sony is blocking large packets of data, so by adjusting the max data packet size, you can connect.

It really adds credence to the fact all the consoles that are trying to re-connect are in fact DDOSing the network again.

DDOS isn't a hack though. People keep saying these guys clearly aren't hackers, but if they gained illegal access to the servers people are claiming were used for these attacks, that did involve some hacker know-how.
Or you just buy a botnet service with money, as multiple people in this thread suggested.

So in theory, should we be able to set out MTU back to automatic in a few days?
Yep. There was a post a couple of pages ago stating changing the MTU is really only allowing you to sign off and signing you back into PSN and that is why it is working.

So yes, absolutley, you should change it back to automatic once Sony says it is back to normal and the network is really back online.
