The Order: 1886 trailer - "Silent Night"

NeoGAF's all-time most anticipated game:

A fourth-person point of view game with no narrative, no guns, no cut scenes, lots of puzzles, and a female protagonist.

I really don't understand the hate this game gets. It's like every goddamn game has to reinvent the wheel to be appreciated.

Sure, it's more than likely a typical-playing cover-TPS with some QTEs, but it looks more than competent in those areas, and the setting/story/characters looks awesome.

Isn't Quantum Break basically a TPS too? Isn't Bloodborne just a sequel to Dark Souls? Isn't the new Batman just a new Batman?

Exactly!

Because QB has time manipulation, Bloodborne is more about offense than defense, and Batman has the batmobile.

Bloodborne and Batman are the fourth in their series, and I'll hold off on QB until I know it's not the same smoke-and-mirrors as Alan Wake.

....and 1886 has a good storyline with werewolves. How many f'in games have werewolves?

EDIT - beaten on the werewolves! (and I don't mean to flame the aforementioned games, just playing devil's advocate)

Risk means different things to different people.

Sure, it's easy to look at The Order and think it's lolnotrisky because TPS, etc, but from a development perspective, it's the first console game from a previously PSP-focused developer, on a new in-house engine, tackling the genre for the first time on their own on a new IP. And while mechanically there's no ground-breaking innovation, there's enough at the fundamental level that it wasn't an easy task for any developer, like the weapons and stuff.

At the end of the day, not every developer looks to be a force of gameplay innovation, especially if this is their first console/large-scale project. Just an investment at RAD for them to do this is plenty risky. I mean, Sony's not foreign to projects where smaller devs bit off more than they could chew. (PSAll Star, Twisted Metal, and Journey to an extent )

Don't know how you came to that conclusion when the post mentioned nothing about giving studios creative freedom.

he means to some extent freedom to studios on what sort of "game" they want to make and yes when it comes to say something like heavy rain vs normal games the freedom is evident. In this the difference would be in the heavy focus rad has put on cinematic aspects and no I dont believe making a game fully cinematic is completely safe (tps/great graphics are) but the huge focus on story and using film grain etc it def rad doing its own vision of what it thinks the game should be. If they played it safe it would be more gears. Would have mp , co-op etc. The problem is if you look at in from the perspective of all games in general then yeah not much new is going on here but within the context of tihs is a mobile dev whos been given almost equal billing to established sony first parties and dont have mp and other parts shoe horned in yes it says quite a bit.

I was just trying to pinpoint why those games don't generate as much hate eventhough the gameplay is all samey in them as well.

IB4 it derails even further, I liked the podcast linked. It actually makes me interested further and would be pretty good they can keep the variety going throughout the whole game because they've demonstrated they understand how a sequence can get tiring and hope it translates well. This is the type of stuff I want to hear more about from the game.

RaD should really just let Ru and Pessino be the only people to talk about this game in public. Their passion is incredible. Pessino's Facebook post on the score got me hyped and I usually don't put much stock in game music.

Whelp, its safe to say the game probably being a short romp things will be getting spoilery from now on and it's time to go on blackout.

I think we will get another set of previews in January and then "launch trailer" in Feb. So far they sticked to their "no big spoilers" rule, and they hidden the storyline and surprises pretty well from us.

Exactly.

But hey, it's a PS4 exclusive that looks like CG, so the usual suspects will shit on the game don't matter what.

It could be the best game ever made, but people would find a way to shit on it.

Can we stop playing the victim? Not everyone who has criticized the game has an agenda against Sony. People need to understand that being overly defensive of the game only contributes to make The Order threads as ridiculous as they are.

I think the reason a lot of people in GAF and the enthusiast press 'don't want' a game like that is that we've played so many of them recently that the genre is feeling stale; not because we've played so few that none of us are fans.

So there's another TPS set in Victorian London with Werewolves and has the Knights of the round as lead characters? Seems a lot of games coming out after the Order like the setting at least, there are two that are pretty much using the same locale.

yep, thats pretty silly because there arent any similar games. Going even further, there arent many similar TPS for PS4 either...

I just hope that The Order isn't like the first 2 hours of The Last Of Us.
Started great but it wasn't enough gameplay for my liking in the first two hours.
I actually stopped playing and only picked it up again because people told me it would get better. And it did and it became my game of the forvever, thats how much I loved the last 15 hours.
But what I've seen of The Order so far looks more like the first two hours of TLoU than the last 15 hours.

So i guess even after the experience with TLOU you haven't learned your lesson not to judge a game too quickly?

question, guys
how much of this game is QTE's?

I could not play GOW because of that.. and I am not in the mood to waste 60 bucks on a game, that for me, may be unplayable
I really really hate QTE's

I do have this pre bought but am thinking of canceling and using this to pay off Witcher
which I know I can play

It's 110% QTEs.

If you really want to know then check the new gameplay demos and see yourself. Actually this game does not exactly have QTE instead its a branching events and follows differently to give meaningful fight either you fail or success in that according to some previews. This game combines everything like action, story, different gameplay elements etc., so if you want something unique then keep your preorder otherwise wait for witcher 3.

EDIT: GOW QTE are mostly optional except in few case as you can kill enemies without them also.

My wife would also approve, btw. ;)

Well, then. I do hope that wasn't a spoiler in this trailer. Knowing RAD, I doubt it was.

Just think about how careful RAD has been to show footage that might spoil anything they don't want to. That scene is similar to the TLOU's trailer that tries to play with viewers' heads by showing Ellie pointing her gun at the screen in once scene and Joel grabbing his stomach with great pain in another, etc.

I'm 100% certain that's no significant spoiler.
