I've never gotten into MGS games (yet, anyway) but just the name "The Phantom Pain" has me intrigued.
I'll be giving the series yet another try soon as I just bought Ground Zeros. Maybe it'll stick this time.

I notice whatever game Troy is currently voice acting, he takes on the character's appearance in real like. Notice the hair and scarf...just like Ocelot.

it's supposed to look stupid. i'm baffled that you think a chicken hat is out of place in a metal gear game when they've done tons of silly things in there (croc hat, porn mags, cardboard boxes that fool enemies, fart and poop jokes, shall i continue?)
if you think the chicken hat is stupid, don't wear the chicken hat. i'm not entirely sure how that takes enjoyment away from the game in any way
Jeez it's just an amusing gimmick to make fun of the people who suck at this game. Nobody forces you to wear it.
Kojima said he implemented those things like the cardboard box or chicken hat to lighten up the mood because MGSV will have the darkest story yet.
Again, it's all optional, you don't have to use it!
I was also taken by the detail in the cabin. Lots of it. Good job MGSV team! Looks to be coming well!
Croc hat, porn mags and cardboard boxes all have gameplay elements to them, this is just a "wear this if you suck" (well why don't you add an easy mode instead then?). Mostly this just seems like something they added so they could sell it as merchandise.

You are completely right, actually. This is indeed a "wear it if you suck" item.
It is still funny, though. I will be using it during my second or third playthrough, just to see it in cutscenes.

Did you have a problem with Kerotans, by any chance? Or the Ape Escape minigame? Or any of the other fourth-wall breaking pieces of comedy that is part-and-parcel with Kojima's style? It's like people forget that Metal Gear has always been anime as fuck. You can even completely ignore the chicken hat if you don't want to use it.

Facts are overrated.
The ape escape was not part of the main game, and the fourth-wall stuff often fitted with the narrative like in MGS2, I guess I didn't know putting a chicken hat on your main character was an anime trope sorry about that I guess.

It's a video editing keyboard keys and sleeve, placed over an actual keyboard (or keys are replaced) to see editing shortcuts on the keyboard in case you don't know or remember your shortcuts. Makes editing faster.

It's Kojima's funny way to say "Hey you suck, try to play better or wear this." I think it's an awesome idea.
The stealth genre is all about not getting spotted but then again, you can still play the way you want.
If you get spotted like 3 times a message pops up and asks if you want to wear the chicken hat, if you choose "yes" then the enemy has a harder time seeing you, if you choose "no" then you can still rambo around or whatever you want, it's totally up to you how you want to play this game. The chicken hat doesn't change shit, only if you want to make the game easier.
