Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Here is how you deal with Brad liking something/Jeff not liking something:

Take note, rest of Giant Bomb.

man no-one even made a fight for bayonetta 2. wish someone would have gone in on it being infinetely more creative than fucking mordor. even if mordor was more broadly acceptable at least make it interesting, better to have that rumble than more destiny chat.

Finished the final podcast, great listen. But it did highlight to that although there have been some games I love, comparatively it's been a very poor year for games. Also, Destiny making the top 10 is absolutely criminal.

Just watched the final video.

I was wondering why when Troy Baker was at Gamespot for that live show one day, Giant Bomb didn't do anything with him. Glad to see that the opportunity wasn't wasted after all. :)

I'm actually very pleased with all the Giant Bomb GOTY content this year, and I'd say it's one of the best. Hilarious premise, tons of GB in-jokes (sleepy Brad was behind everything!), contributions from Stardust and Troy Baker... and while none of my big favorites actually won any awards, they did get brought up in the discussions multiple times (thank you Alex for pushing for D4 and Patrick for Danganronpa)... and then freakin' ending it all with LOCKDOWN. Too freakin' good.

Only huge downer is I'm gonna miss Patrick a lot. I wasn't too keen on him in the beginning, but his willingness to actually explore and play games outside of his normal comfort and knowledge zone made me a fan. I'm interested to see what he does next.

Can someone convince me why Mordor is so great? I felt the arguments for it were kind of shallow. Everything I've seen from it looks exactly like Assassin's Creed traversal and a (weaker) Batman fighting system.

The combat also seems very easy to break: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AV9W2ZdmjU&list=FLwOozlYrBim7OmQ9jzi_jgQ&index=7

I know the guy in the video is probably high level and that he's being a little obnoxious, but he makes some very valid points. It turned me off of buying the game. I'm desperately hoping someone will convince me it's actually good though.

Great final podcast. Probably best moment was Brad reading the final top 10 at the bottom and the reactions from the guys to Destiny and MK8. I lol'd.

Yeah, that day 5 video has convinced me to play the game. I don't care if that character or the mechanics of that game is broken. That looked insanely fun to play.

It's worth checking out. Probably the ultimate "feel like a badass" game.

Just realize that the combat mechanics are just shit if you care about anything like challenge or, well, using your brain. It's truly the anti-Bayonetta in that respect. "Press A for Awesome: The Game." That's totally fine, but just make sure you know what you're getting into or you'll be pretty disappointed like I was. It's particularly problematic because it keeps the Nemesis system from really even coming into play until you get the mind-control ability (which is far too late in the game).

I never really found myself enjoying the combat in the game that much, but I was never a fan of the Batman combat either. I prefer combat like Dragon's Dogma, I feel more in control with it.

The only thing surprising about Destiny is that Brad settled for 10th. The real shocker is that Dan got Mario Kart on there, despite Alex trying to "3D World" it. Also, Jeff waiting until everyone else ran out of steam to move all his games up the list was god damn masterful.

"I'm ok with..."

Shut up Alex

I had no problem with Alex this year. He was better this year than last year when he seemingly went away after getting backstabbing on 3d world. Wish the other guys like Jason or Drew would assert them more. I mean, Drew let Brad shit on Wolfenstein for a good 10 minutes and it was his GOTY.

I'm not crazy in thinking GB have a rule where once you start charging you're effectively released right? If so re: Best Debut, despite not understanding Jeff's argument, isn't Hearthstone disqualified as they were accepting actual money in Closed Beta last year?
Sorry to quote myself, but did they come out and say they've changed their own rule re: counting games from when they start charging?

I'm pleased the game is represented, I've watched so much of it via streams this year it's crazy, but I'm not including it on my list because the GB rule let it count last year.

Great job, Giant Bomb! Loved both the GOTY podcast and video content.

Seems like lots of personal darlings made it into the Top 10 this year. I think that's pretty neat as it gives the final list more personality than a faceless reprint of the Metacritic Top 10 of 2014.

Brad got Destiny with zero backing.
Dan got Mario Kart 8 with much the same.
Alex got Hearthstone.
Jeff got Call of Duty.

Seems like the only General Consensus winners were Mordor, Bayonetta, South Park, Far Cry, Jazzpunk & Shovel Knight.

I'd say that's a decent balance of individual vs. personal picks.

I loved the line at the end of the show where someone said, "Well that's 11 hours of deliberation in the can." and Jeff quips, "And we pack it up and send it out to you just so you can see how bulls**t the whole process is!" Too funny. Kinda lends perspective too.

Congrats to all the winners. I only played South Park and Jazzpunk, but the contenders all looked easily qualified.

Let's do it again next year!

Cheers.

Damn, I hasn't noticed that until you pointed it out. Jeff remains the king of working the system in his favor. Well played sir.

It's because the combat is extremely poor and can be played with great success with your eyes closed and with one hand for the most part, literally.

It certainly looks cool executing the fuck out of some orcs, though.

I think they changed it because they have added a early access category. So I think a game can only win outside of that category for its final version.

It doesn't just seem to be easy to break, it is easy to break.

And it only gets easier from there, people tell me that the nemesis system produces unique and interesting stories / rivalries, but outside of a couple of orcs managing to escape from me and me running away from orc commanders later on from sheer boredom I didn't get to interact much with the nemesis system because I was god damned immortal. I didn't use the brand much because it was less effective than killing everything (and it puts talion into a comprised position where he can actually take damage instead of being a mashing immortal god). The game's combat mechanics being so simple and being such a cakewalk make it so the nemesis system doesn't really even come into play, at least it didn't for me.

It's pretty easy to mash out the combat on keyboard, but it's even easier on pad. If someone told me they facerolled through the game, I'd be inclined to take it literally.

That's basically a love letter for the Nemesis system. It does seem like a very cool thing, but I keep wondering if there is anything more to the game. The fighting seems to be mostly showy, but mechanically weak (just like B:I, hehe).

Might be confirmation bias, but this is exactly what I was afraid of. Fights look like awesome spectacles where you're beheading orcs left and right, but if you dig into it a little bit it seems like it's just smashing buttons. Does playing on hard make any difference at all?

Remember guys, this is supposed to be representative of the Giant Bomb staff, not some overall appraisal of the quality of the games that came out this year.

Brad was completely infatuated with Destiny for a good long time. Jeff kept coming back to it, too, despite having huge issues with the game. It makes sense that it makes it in the top 10 even if it's also one of the most disappointing games of the year.

Brad was the only person who thought the game was anywhere near good. Jeff was negative to ambivalent and the rest of the crew thought it was hot garbage. If it wasn't for Brad being a giant manchild Jeff would also agree with the others, they were basically unanimous on the game being not worthy for the list.

Brad also manipulated the arguments to cut out games that like half the staff liked out of the running, and only put Destiny in the list after two rounds of cutting, and pulled a bunch of other shenanigans.

I don't really care at all, but at least it's good to know that every person with a reasoning brain in that game knew Destiny was awful and they probably all know it's on the list just to stop Brad's crying.

It was overall funny in how embarrassing Brad acted. But it's business as usual for him, both for these year-end things and other content in general.

The rest of the list was cool though! I'm actually happy with pretty much every other game on the list.

Edit: This reminds me of the time I was on a jury, actually

Well considering that I'm a huge Kingdom Hearts fan....

I kid, I kid...

Man, Patrick's farewell post was an unexpected gut punch. Really going to miss his content that brought on many guests and him trying out and really understanding games like spelunky and binding of Isaac. Shame he wasn't on the bombcast more. Beast of luck wherever you land.

Let Brad have his one thing, everyone else got something.. It's about compromises.

Jeff got Call of Duty to the four spot. I mean that seems more insane to me than Destiny making the list.
