Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

This section of the forum is filled with peopled who hate the game just to hate it, the OT is up to 13 (haters will spin it into 'because no matchmaking' but it's a 'community' thread for a reason)

Gotta love the Destiny defenders that are in denial about the OT and sadly try to use it as proof of how good the game is. Everyone is very well aware that it's nothing but a handful of people trying to find others to raid with and/or complaining about loot drops. It's been that way since like October.

Also, I vote that you return the game. It's not worth spending any of your time on.

Thanks to everyone for contributing so far. It probably is my fault for not investing time in reading up about the game (damn that impulse buyer in me!), but I will give it a try and see how it is. If I find I get a decent length of time out of it then that is money well spent for me. I don't mind a bit of grinding (big fan of Diablo), but if it's not fun then I won't be too disappointed to bail out if I've enjoyed the run up to the grind fest.

I have to admit I am pretty nervous about playing it now haha. My excitement level has dropped a bit but we'll see how it goes

Ignore everything and make up your own mind.

Lots of comments are too negative. I bought Destiny at release and really enjoyed. It's a grind, but fun to play. Never regretted buying it. You will enjoy as well. :-)

And there he is, can't have a destiny topic derail with out the ring leader
You would think the game slaughtered his family, kicked his dog and walked off with his girlfriend by the way he slanders this game.

"Ring leader", fucking lol.

The difference between Gaming and Community Destiny is so jarring. Some people have it really out for this game indeed.

It is really a fun game to play... if you like then you won't stop.

*Counts post actually giving OP beginners tips... abandons thread

Don´t know - OP was asking for best weapons and armor in Destiny which he bought DIGITALLY btw.

Answer is "return it".

So yes - question seems to have been challenging for some.

He also, more generally, asked what tips we'd give to a Destiny novice (which you conveniently left out). Telling him to return it is a legitimate tip, whether you like the advice or not.

Especially for a digitally purchased game - sound advice.

OP bought game from PSN store, many posts include return it...smh. How does that even contribute to the OP? For everyone (including OP, lurkers and in between) go to the Destiny OT for information and questions you may have if new to the game. Outside of that is just gonna get you shit posts tbh.

Just to clarify, my newbie tip is...http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=956707

And I was completely ignorant to this. Sorry guys, didn't mean to ignite anything here :(

No problem man, DestinyGAF is pretty impervious to gaming side's hate crusade on the game. Stick to the OT, and you'll get some actually decent advice on builds, weapons, armor. Just start on the story mode, don't mind the shitty story, the shooting gameplay is pretty good. If you enjoy that then you're good and can think about starting the endgame grind. It's a great pick-up-and-play game for quick gaming sessions each day.

It's 'appropriate', because it's cool to hate Destiny. It would be inappropiate if you did this in a Bayonetta tips thread, you'd have to admit.

This is what I probably should have done and stupidly didn't think about it

I thought I would have a good time with Destiny before playing it as well, I imagine everyone did or they wouldn't have bought it.

Turns out, I didn't have a good time with it and wish I hadn't bought it.

What tips would you give to a complete Destiny novice? Anything is welcome. Things to do first? Best weapons? Armour? Etc. That sort of thing.

Aha.

I didn´t have a good time with Bayo - does that mean that nobody will? Should I run around telling people to return it?

What kind of bullshit is that?

This shit is only OK if it comes to Destiny for some reason. Hating it is the thing to do it seams. En vogue.

I will give tips :)

Gallahorn is the best weapon you can have in the game... it is crazy how it eats everything but it is random to get it... you can have lucky by loot system or Xur selling it...

Handcanons are the most fun weapons to play in my opinion... I love to use them in PVP.

Fusion Rifles and Snipe Rifles are super useful too.

Pulse Rifles are just bad... I can't use them.

It's getting old seeing every single gaming side Destiny thread shit on the game.

The game has problems - very obvious and very annoying problems - and it'll be a while before that course is corrected (if it ever is). Very few people will defend this game's glaring flaws, of which nobody faults others for being disappointed by.

And yet, by some fallacious, ass backwards space magic, we've reached a point where other people's disappointments are contagious and applicable to everybody else. GAF has gone from criticizing the game to criticizing the people still playing the game, as if it's impossible to like the game in spite of boneheaded descisions like releasing a lame ass story or charging 20 bucks for 5 bucks worth of content.

The people still playing Destiny either enjoy the game for what it is or are stuck grinding for what it could be. Whatever their reasons, they're probably getting their money's worth out of it. I don't see anything wrong with people enjoying a flawed game, especially when most of them actively participate in the community to help others and offer feedback to improve Destiny.

This projection needs to stop. By all means, call the devs out on the bullshit, but please keep some of those vitriol opinions about the people doing that very same thing while playing the game in check.

Amen.

Holy hyperbole. The game is not garbage, the gunplay is fast and responsive especially for a 30fps game. The framerate drops are minimal. The pvp maps are well designed, the tried and true Bungie enemy AI is also great, The worlds are pretty gorgeous etc. If I was the OP i'd be pretty frustrated with actually trying to receive gameplay tips and being hounded with "don't even bother" posts when he hasn't even played the game yet.

You're right, the gunplay is great. The framerate drops are minimal because graphics wise the game is nothing special.

The worlds are nice to look at but without any decent story or lore who gives a shit about a pretty skybox?

Im not even going to get started on why this game is still HOT GARBAGE.

The game has very nice IQ and excellent art design. I've not seen a single noticable frame rate drop in the hundreds of hours I've played, no matter how many enemies appear on screen and I FPS count on my PC all the time.

I really thought 30fps would be a huge issue for me, but being absolutely stable means I soon forget.

Don't know man, I really don't remember much about Bioshock story, but I do remember Rapture and Columbia fondly. Different strokes I guess.

It's refreshing. I never understood people who could say 30 fps is fine, until I played Destiny.

Avoid the echo chamber of hate and hang out in the OT. Like somebody else said, read that first post in the OT, and read the links. There's tons of good information. Don't worry about any detail of your character build or equipment.

If it's not legendary or exotic, you'll be chucking it out eventually anyway.

You should play it with friends on the hardest difficulties.(The vanilla WoW quest design gets boring pretty fast if played alone.)

There's not really that much to the game where it might require tips... If/when you get to the raids and Nightfalls, that's when you will actually need to use some sort of strategy. But by that time things should be pretty self explanatory.

Edit: But yeah, i would advice returning it(If you can). It's mostly a grindfest and Bungie is unwilling to change it. The raids are fun though but it's not up to par with what i have had in actual MMOs.

thanks for these tips. I will keep an eye out for Gallahorn, maybe I'll be lucky! :p

"With amazing voice acting from top tier Hollywood actors" (c)

I hope OP doesn't get buyer's remorse after all of the hate spewed in this thread. There a ton of reasons to love Destiny and you don't have to go out of your way to find them. Definitely find buddies in the community thread to play with, it'll make it that much better!

I forget to say...

The Musics... sometimes I play Destiny just to listen the amazing soundtrack... it really give you the sensation of what is happening.

I would like 60fps but 30fps works pretty good for the game.

it's not just about the frames. The art, color palette and lightning is really cohesive and there are no technical blemishes like juddering and on my television there is little to nothing of that flickering. I admit on my friends 55 inch it was noticable though. But in the end Destiny is a game that felt more just as pleasing as MGS ground Zeroes to me and better than for example Final Fantasy 14 which is nearly locked 60 fps, but has juddering.

Not so much buyers remorse as thread-starting remorse :p

Play through all the missions and start bounties ASAP. Also, don't be afraid to hang out and do patrol missions for awhile to get weapon and armor drops/upgrades.

Oh and OP, go to the community thread, you might actually get helpfull answers/help and not just trolling. .

This guy clearly doesn't read the OT. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It was on Giant Bomb's best games of the year list, so I'm sure you'll be able to enjoy it for a good number of hours, OP.

The community is the best I have ever played with, and the voice acting knocked it out of the park.

Why exactly? You've gotten honest opinions from both camps. Both people who poured hours of their life into the game and ended up hating it, and people who poured hours into it and loved it.

Both are legitimate opinions, though I feel there is more to dislike in Destiny than love.
