Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Brad bullying Destiny into the top ten might be signaling GB's descent into irrelevance. The complete lack of reason or introspection combined with total confidence in one's position.

And then CoD even getting on this list is...well, a decision that will look farcical in a year or two.

Not sure what you're trying to say with that link. I know Jeff gave it a bad score, the game wasn't looking too hot back then but you could tell from the tone of his review that he had already decided he didn't like the game before playing it.

However, the game is completely fixed now and has loads more free additional content yet they continue to dismiss it as broken or a mess despite it being one of the best games of the year.

None of the updates are going to fix the fact Jeff hates the driving.

The "good gameplay fundamentals" defense for Destiny doesn't really hold up for me.

I can see appreciating the controls and guns in and of themselves, but somewhere along the line they needed to make an actual game out of them.

Imagine if Nintendo made a Mario game that controlled exactly like Super Mario World (or whichever your favorite Mario game is) but instead of using those controls and abilities to have the player advance through a series of increasingly-difficult platforming segments, the game was a dozen boring, rote, banal platforming stages which had to be repeated 300 times each in order to advance deeper into the game.

That's what Destiny is. Sure the controls are good, but the overall game design is a giant wet pile of nostril goo from a runny nose that just won't go away.

The Brad Fillibuster inevitably signals the end of Giant Bomb, just as it has for the past... *checks watch*... last five years or so

CoD making the cut makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than Destiny.

I was also really surprised at the Luftrausers love-in. I mean, it's good but I don't think it's "top ten material." Though I suppose when Smash and DK get ignored for...reasons...it opens up some spots at the top.

Yep, they were bad arguments but the main problem is less with Brad but the others for not challenging him on them as you said. If Jeff had been more anti-Destiny (which he should have been), he could have easily ripped that game to shreds and it would have got nowhere near the top 10. It was only really Alex opposing him but Jeff with his massive backflip confirmed its spot

"Theres no way the runner up of most disappointing game for 2014 can make it into the top 10 list"

Couple of hours later...

"Destiny is better than half the games left on this list"

*Sigh*

Well i was counting on Jeff because it didn't seem like the others played diablo 3 much, from how much hes played it he really should have gone to bat for it with the destiny/diablo comparison

I am so tired of people talking down to anyone who really enjoys Destiny. It's fine if you didn't like it or it didn't live up to the initial hype for a lot of people, but that doesn't somehow invalidate the fact that a lot of people (myself included) genuinely enjoy the game.

People enjoying destiny doesn't change the fact destiny uses some of the most arguably unethical techniques to generate addiction, Not disimilar to what Zynga do: New content!? you crazy! Yoo, lets just those timers (weekly events) going!

Personally, I'm very OK with journalist calling that game out. I don't want this industry heading that way.

Man, Brad fought super hard for Destiny. I'm proud of him, because that game totally deserves to be there.

As someone who has sunk dozens of hours into Destiny, wtf are you talking about. Wolfenstein isn't on this list, nor Dragon Age, nor Smash Bros, nor numerous other games clearly better than Destiny.

And did it poorly. When I want addiction, I jump back into WoW for a month or two. And though it has worn off over the years in keeping me hooked, it is MUCH better designed overall.

WoW is like high quality cocaine and Destiny is cheap speed.

The GOTY podcast was recorded roughly a month ago. They're ignorant of the game's current state in this week's podcast because it hadn't happened yet for them.

I doubt it'd matter though; Jeff didn't like the game because of how it handled, not because it's online was broken or it lacked weather effects.

Did they say it was still broken or were they simply talking about how broken it was at release? I don't recall them even talking much about Drive Club.

While I personally think Destiny deserves the 10 spot, Brad's reasons for it were awful.

He basically shoehorned it in through sheer force of will, I think any of the cut games could have made it with the arguments he was putting forth and with his belligerent style

'The core was good' and 'I had fun with friends' are not good arguments.

he spent more time attacking the other games than giving reasons why destiny belonged.

Going by that argument Dan, Patrick, Alex and Vinny could all say that about smash.

Seriously? Yeah you may not like it but saying Destiny being on the list is "signaling GB's descent into irrelevance"? Come on man.

Number 1 thing that made me mad was best debut. Let's not consider Hearthstone because its a apin off of an existing series...Shadow of Mordor....yeah it takes the category.

I'm not the person you are responding to with this, but I honestly did not know that. I figured it was a bit earlier and not having 5 days of recording in the middle of the holidays or anything, but a whole month? Wow. So December launches just don't get to compete?

Jeff's arguments were pretty bad too. He pretty much just said "I don't like South Park/Donkey Kong/kart racers" without much further. Some attempt at a broader perspective or discounting of personal preference or any kind of further elaboration would have been nice.

I can totally empathise with Brad on Destiny.

It's in my personal top 10 for very similar reasons.

I experienced the same cycle as what many seem to have, in that I can produce a list of the games flaws as long as your arm, and have no interest in ever playing it again at this point. But for about 70 hours it was pretty damn good, and brought a number of my friends together in a way that not many games do. I love and hate Destiny.

Destiny's place in the top 10 is entirely valid. As is Call of Duty's while we are at it. Nothing has a divine right to be anywhere on a group-list like this.

As someone who has like 50 days /played in WOW characters, I say with shame: If you wanna get high, at least get some decent designer drug dude

like... destiny? are you for realzies!?

This is funny because I just did a /played earlier tonight and I have 52 days. To make it worse, I am new to WoW relatively speaking, as I only started at the tail end of Wrath in 2010. over 50 days of my last 4 years in one game.

I imagine they'd qualify for 2015 typically if they came out after deliberations but before New Years Day.

I've gotta figure it's kind of not been an issue in the past though, most games don't get released in the last few weeks of December.

I believe his wording was "South Park/Donkey Kong/kart racers are bad/fucking terrible".

That's the thing though, it doesn't matter what other people think about what you like, but somehow Destiny fans are pathological about it. Brad couldn't just be satisfied with spending a ton of time with the game and enjoying (?) it, he had to get it on the Giant Bomb GOTY list, even though it had no bearing on the validity of his experience and it obviously wasn't going to change anyone else's mind about the game.

I'm usually fan of Jeff's jaded act, but man I found it hard to get through this year. Still a fun bunch of podcasts and videos but not the highlight it usually is.

I mean why would he even elaborate? We are talking about Jeff Gertsmann here, like dude common.

Brad during GOTY discussions is always entertaining. That fight for Destiny.

I think they were all recorded between the 1st of December and the 9th because they were all on UPF on the 5th and had been their all week and then the Patrick, Alex and Vinny had gone by the Wednesday the following week.

God how I love these reactions. It will even funnier if Destiny is also on Neogaf top 10.

With a little luck, some folks will rage so hard that they will explode.

GG Brad!

Jeff killed everything he hated then basically backed Destiny because the year was so shit otherwise. Rest of the team fall for Brad and Jeff every single year.

GOTY is not a game for them but a political movement!

Things I will say about the list:

1. Destiny should have been replaced with either Wolfenstein, Sunset Overdrive, Dark Souls 2 or Smash Bros. Jeff just thought too hard about it and somehow ended up at "Yeah this belongs on this list"
2. Far Cry 4 is ranked too high. Should not be top 3 as just another one of "those games"
3. Jazzpunk got it's win with best style. That game might be the funniest game but it's not one of best 10 games.
4. Mordor is too clunky.
5. Who cares these lists have always been weird.

I'm picturing you with a bunch of photos and post-its on your wall keeping track of the duders.

What was Vinny Caravella's whereabouts on August 11th?

I actually thought brad was going to cry at one point when he was arguing for destiny. The moment where he was saying how matt Kessler killed a boss with one shot.

Ya I guess so, and it takes a special game to win GOTY from most outlets if it came out in the first 3 months of a year, let alone December.

I honestly think if Shadow of Mordor came out in February or something, it would not even have been a certain top 10. See also: Infamous' disappearing act. I didn't expect it to WIN anything necessarily, but it has hardly been in the conversation. In other years that'd be fine, but in a year where an 8/10 game won GOTY, and several other games of about that quality made the top ten, it's weird it was so quickly forgotten. Had it launched in November, I bet it would have been a contender for top 10.

People need to stop pretending that people are mad at Destiny being in the Top 10. People are mad by the completely bullshit reasonings of which it got in the Top 10 with. If there were good arguments to be made for it and it got on, people wouldn't be nearly as annoyed.

But as it stands I'm almost finished listening to three hours of deliberations where multiple games got kicked off the list for little to no reason, one of the games that got top three for most disappointing also got in the top 10 for best game, and supposedly the number one spot is taken up by a game that has many of the same gameplay mechanics that were highlighted and almost took the crown of an award section called "Please Stop".

People aren't mad at the top 10, people are mad at how the top 10 got to be the top 10, through what seems like a lot of illogical nonsense that goes completely against things they've said in other GOTY podcasts this year.

As someone who has sunk dozens of hours into Destiny, wtf are you talking about. Wolfenstein isn't on this list, nor Dragon Age, nor Smash Bros, nor numerous other games clearly better than Destiny.

I think that after a few hours of listening to the crew talking about these games, Dragon Age and Smash were basically confirmed not to appear on the final list. I'm not saying the final list is good or that Destiny is better than any of those games, but the push for it was clearly big enough from Brad and even (somehow, weirdly) Jeff.

Let's face it, those eleven hours were filled with people shoehorning their favorites in certain categories (Dan with MGS on best story, Alex with Jazzpunk in every category ever, Jeff with Luftrausers). Brad never really fought for anything outside of Destiny, he let go of South Park and Sunset in a lot of categories. That's why I'm even more suprised that people are infuriated over Destiny taking a super unimportant 10th place.

Well, not that surprised. It's Destiny and this is GAF after all.

Infamous was discussed, it sounded like no one enjoyed it. Dan was in the game and he still didnt seem to like it much.

Honestly I think Mordor is a lot better than Infamous, and I liked Infamous. Seems most of the crew felt the same way.

Looking at the download url, that video was recorded on the 8th of august.

The mystery of august 11th becomes mysteriouser.

Well he didn't record his next video Rex Rocket until the 12th so I guess he just watched Bombin' in the am on loop all day.

Yeah, it doesnt seem like they really want ubi to "please stop" with the open world formula considering mordor heavily cribs off it and far cry actually is an ubi open world game, and both are in the top 3. Im tempted to say they should just do away wih a site top 10 and just stick to personal lists because this years results are really incoherent.
