Just bought Destiny....newbie tips please!

This guy clearly doesn't read the OT. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Typical response. Then I usually point out that the latest several pages are exactly what I said, and the defender usually comes back with "but but but, that's just because of what day it is...blah blah blah". Lol....never change.

Why exactly? You've gotten honest opinions from both camps. Both people who poured hours of their life into the game and ended up hating it, and people who poured hours into it and loved it.

Both are legitimate opinions, though I feel there is more to dislike in Destiny than love.

He wasn't asking for opinions though.

But that´s all he got.

What tips would you give to a complete Destiny novice? Anything is welcome. Things to do first? Best weapons? Armour? Etc. That sort of thing.
(First ever thread too!)

If you want to talk about Destiny you must go to the OT in the community section. Here you will only get people hating on the game. Yes Gaf is bad sometimes.

Bungie overpromised and vastly underdelivered. GAF has every reason to hate.

Now mind you, I find the act of running around and shooting things in Destiny to be extremely fun, but everything else? MEH.

Gotta love the Destiny defenders that are in denial about the OT and sadly try to use it as proof of how good the game is. Everyone is very well aware that it's nothing but a handful of people trying to find others to raid with and/or complaining about loot drops. It's been that way since like October.

Also, I vote that you return the game. It's not worth spending any of your time on.

What exactly are we allowed to post about in the OT then?

Even with the lfg posts and complaints removed, we'd still have an impressive amount of OTs. No one is saying that means the game is flawless.

It's getting old seeing every single gaming side Destiny thread shit on the game.

The game has problems - very obvious and very annoying problems - and it'll be a while before that course is corrected (if it ever is). Very few people will defend this game's glaring flaws, of which nobody faults others for being disappointed by.

And yet, by some fallacious, ass backwards space magic, we've reached a point where other people's disappointments are contagious and applicable to everybody else. GAF has gone from criticizing the game to criticizing the people still playing the game, as if it's impossible to like the game in spite of boneheaded descisions like releasing a lame ass story or charging 20 bucks for 5 bucks worth of content.

The people still playing Destiny either enjoy the game for what it is or are stuck grinding for what it could be. Whatever their reasons, they're probably getting their money's worth out of it. I don't see anything wrong with people enjoying a flawed game, especially when most of them actively participate in the community to help others and offer feedback to improve Destiny.

This projection needs to stop. By all means, call the devs out on the bullshit, but please keep some of those vitriol opinions about the people doing that very same thing while playing the game in check.

It's not though, so. Please point out all the posts.

The bane of a game where you have to grind.

I won't be suprised if Destiny wins fps of the year for goty (it has the ''passionate'' factor), but I think Wolfenstein has more universal appeal to edge it out. It will easily beat MCC though.

Ok, go count the amount of lfg posts and complaining posts.

Tell us how many OTs we have now.

We can wait.

For a start, no one is saying the amount of OTs make it a good game. Just that the amount of OTs show a very active community of players, and lots of peopel who like the game despite its flaws.

Go count the number of actual lfg posts and complaining posts.

Then tell me how many OTs it's had since launch.

We can wait.

Also, what exactly are we allowed to post about in the OT to make it acceptable?

Actually don't worry about counting anything. It doesn't matter.

No, you go count and I'll wait.

I don't care what you post about in the OT. But to act like the number of OTs is representative of how good the game is is complete nonsense. Especially when it's just filled with the same few people saying the same few things over and over about the raid.

Gotta love these destiny haters that hate the game so much they have to come in every thread and try there hardest to prove everyone opinion wrong with there "facts"

As for unclecross if you hate the game so much and telling others not to waste anymore time on such a unworthy game, why are you in the OT scouring over every post..
oh right because your not in there and pulled that info out your ass.

Sorry Zoba your well-thought out post will be overlooked in favor incessant hate. OP all I can say is that you'll find better tips and help in the OT. Should you end up liking the game, either keep it to yourself or be exiled to a pariah state.

Surprise surprise, a Destiny thread with tons of shit posting. OP - it's a very fun game with some of the best gunplay around. Visit the OT where you will find a ton of people to play with and helpful advice. Destiny has its faults, absolutely, but overall it has a very solid feedback and is actually fun to play.

You are completely right about the number part.

Destiny is my goty and I have i think 1 post in there.

He wasn't asking for opinions though.

But that´s all he got.

Oh no opinions on a message board whatever will he do? We are not allowed to give opinions now? My best Destiny tip is to not even begin it and try to spend your money on a game that is actually worth your time in the end, and doesnt have you replaying the same missions over and over and over to get a slightly better weapon to do all those missions all over again with.

I'm not gonna get into it now, but I'm pretty sure you know that in the context of this thread and the questions the OP asked this is a load of bullshit.

Not engaging in a thread is also always an option.

Not every destiny thread needs to be an outlet for destiny hate.

OP had questions. Got 0 answers.

Clearly you do, and you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm not acting like anything. There's a great community in there and you saying it's just full of lfg posts and complaining shows you don't actually read it.

He already spent his money on it. Why don't you let him decide whether it's worth it once he has had a chance to play it? Who are you to tell him to return it because you didn't get as much out of it as some others might?

Lol at that post saying OT is only made up of people looking to group up. Fucking lol. Spoken like someone who hasn't visited OT. It's not like the latest OT jumped 100 pages during the three days PSN and a bit of Live was down last week, all complaining about the downtime, talking about the holidays, and hoping Bungie would extend Xur's stay even if he had mediocre stuff to sell. Nah, we were just all setting up groups for when the servers are backup. Yep, it's exactly that. Fucking lol.

Exactly, I hate sports games. So don't go into every Madden or FIFA thread and say how it's the same shit every year. It contributes nothing and it also contributes nothing when people just come to shit on a game they don't like or make witty jokes that are "in".

Where did I say that I hate the game? I played it for several weeks, was very disappointed, and ended up asking for a refund.

I stopped reading the OT back when I was still playing the game because, like I said, it devolved into mainly posts of people looking for raid partners or people complaining about the raid. I also look at the OT whenever one of these threads come up (which is fairly often) and someone makes the ridiculous claim of "it's gotta be great....we're on OT 99!"

We had a pretty good discussion going on about ways to improve the game, but that couldn't happen because we're just some crazy drug-addled sect that blindly idolizes the game.

Is this his profile? (Google said it might be) http://destinystatus.com/psn/GiantBombing

Whoever that is he needs to lose the Queens Guard chest lol... and Super Good Advice? That would make me hate the game, it could definitely do that to you. Vanguard Rank 2... that's... then again, probably not him or maybe he played it on xbox.

Do you have an addictive personality? Can't quit smoking or drinking, find yourself spending cash you shouldn't be on gambling, unhealthily over eat, or just generally find yourself getting fixated on things, so much so that you simply can't stop yourself from thinking about them?

If so, DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. It is built entirely around time sinks and a irregular drip feeding of rewards to get people hooked on it to the point where people are spending hundreds of hours just grinding away to get a slightly better version of an item they already have, just to be able to do more grinding.

It is fun, it's got great gameplay and lovely art design, inspite of the total lack of real story or acknowledgement of progression in such games in the industry at large, to the point where I could believe it were made by Nintendo's evil twin frankly, but it is one of the most cynically designed, personality flaw exploiting games I have ever seen. It's almost as bad as stuff like Dungeon Master Mobile for it's utter contempt for your free time and wallet.

If you're the kind of person that can sink a good 40 hours in over a few months, get up to level 28+, try everything the game has to offer at least once, and then still go 'yeah, that was fun, time to move on', and just walk away, go for it. It's bloody fun, and you'll likely just regret that it wasn't better but have fond memories.

If not, if you start getting obsessed with the grind, and playing the same levels over, and over, and over just in the vague hope random luck will give you a slightly better pair of trousers, then take it back and get Diablo 3 or something instead. At least then you'd be addicted to something that respects you.

THIS! I just keep playing till 31 to justify the digital purchase and in case it gets better in the long term. Luckily, I'm a couple of shards away from that point.
I haven't got the "expansión".

I went to a restaurant last night. I ordered a rib eye steak. I ended up eating 3/4 of it, then sending it back because it was medium and I wanted medium rare.

Excellent post. <3

I just got the game myself and I have been enjoying it so far. Mind you I am only a couple hours in. Came with my PS4 so I figured I would give it a shot. Pretty fun so far and I am looking forward to playing it more.

My favorite part has to be staring at my spaceship while listening to the music on the mission select part. Sounds odd but I really enjoyed looking at that.

it's mostly innuendo and meta discussion these days actually

OP, the best advice you'll hear on this side of the forum is to come to the OT, where people will help you without trying to convince you are a horrible person if you enjoy the game.
With all its flaws, Destiny will still leave me the best gaming memories I've had in a long while. Completing the first raid with friends and friends of friends, all going blind in it and taking two sessions of 4 hours each, is a feeling of accomplishment and cooperation that will be hard to top. Very, very hard.
Also, the community around the game is one the best I've ever seen. Everyone is willing to help.

No, you go count and I'll wait.

You're the one who made the claim. It's obviously bs though as it can't be backed up. The OT actually has one of the most friendly, helpful, and enjoyable communities on gaf imo, and the discussions there often extend beyond idle chatter and lfg (which is kind of also what OTs are used for in general).

Dig those heals in, though.

Your opinion is to damn extreme to matter

You were not built for a game like this, you're not the mold for the rest of society, let it go and stop this damn campaign of yours trying to get people not to buy the game.

Game has its flaws but it's still damn enjoyable

Smh at the guy who said '$20 for $5 worth of content"

The raid alone is worth $15

You sound like someone from faux news trying to manipulate people who can't think for themselves with those baseless facts

The raid alone is worth $15

I really like the game and I disagree.

The raid obviously wasn't as considered as VoG (which has an incredible sense of adventure, progression, and good variety), to the point that after 3 runs I actually dreaded playing it again.

After around 80 VoG runs I still enjoy it.

The rest of the "expansion" content is pretty laughable too.

I paid £20 so I should be reimbursed.

Lol he's the one who made the claim but when someone tells him to back up said claims, he's the one who gets defensive. Show us the receipts.

I like the game but I'm not going to side with Bungie for making us pay for the privilege of enemy spawns in areas we already bought with the base game. A short and easy raid does not make up for that, especially when the next one is 3 months away and the old one is nearly obsolete now.

Without the overpriced dlc you are playing a gimped game, this week the weekly and nightfall strikes are locked, you do not earn extra engrams from strikes unless you play the DLC playlist, you'll also be playing the same 4 or so medium sized PvP maps online since first light has mysteriously vanished from clash.

Merry New Year's Eve everyone :)

So I've just bought Destiny for PS4 from the US PSN store while the Flash Sale was still on. I havent seen/read up on much about the game as I've been trying to make my through my backlog for the last few months, but I think I'll have a pretty good time with Destiny.

What tips would you give to a complete Destiny novice? Anything is welcome. Things to do first? Best weapons? Armour? Etc. That sort of thing.

Thanks! (First ever thread too!)
Run the missions, picking up and completing bounties along the way. Eventually start running the strike playlist and Crucible, which will earn you the marks to purchase better gear to prepare for the Raids.

Along the way you may get a random drop or two that will be better than anything you can buy in the Tower, these are exhilarating moments, but learn not to expect them so as to avoid crushing disappointment, lol.

Eventually, around lvl 26-28, you'll tackle the Vault of Glass. It's fantastic.

At 30, you can jump into the Crota's End festivities, not as good as the VoG, but still fun.

Goal of the game is to make your character as strong and capable as possible, to give you an easier time in the Raids and prepare you for upcoming content releases. Be warned, it's addictive as hell.

Have fun and welcome to the club!

Don't trust this guy:

Game is great, ignore the haters. Cool to hate.

I'd start with a Hunter because you get a good mix of speed and combat. Try different weapons. I prefer auto-rifles. After you finish the campaign, make some friends either here (tons of people still play this daily) and try some strikes. When you're around level 26, do Vault of Glass (the first raid). That's the meat of the original game. You can only benefit from it once a week but totally worth it the first several times.

If you're going to buy the expansions, you may want to know that it's very content light. The new raid is amazing, but the other stuff is just meh. However, you're going to miss out on a lot of stuff by not getting it. Just make sure you're not skipping out on games to buy the expansion. And if you have the money, get both so you save a couple of dimes. But also make sure it's your type of game.

I don't trust you, Kikolool!

Here's my honest advice for you:

1.) Pick whatever class seems most interesting to you and run with it. At the end of the day, they don't play that differently, and their powers are all useful. (Unless you're trying to buddy up with people and run things as a group and want some sort of synergy.)

2.) Don't be in a rush to get through the campaign. Once it's done, it's done, and you'll have nothing left to do but grind the same levels over and over.

3.) When you feel yourself getting bored, or hear a little voice in the back of your head questioning whether you're expending way more time on the game than you're getting enjoyment in return, stop playing. Destiny is a highly flawed game. The responses in this thread should make it clear that there's definitely something seriously wrong with it. A lot of that only becomes obvious when you've put a lot of time into it though, and so, when that time comes, don't try to convince yourself that it's still great like I did, and sink another 10-20 hours into it for nothing. Just walk away and remember that you enjoyed some amount of your time with it. Lots of good games came out this year, and you can always go play those rather than spending the next month+ grinding away at a poorly constructed end game.

Your goals should be:

1) hit level 20
2) collect and equip blue level 20 armor
3) get vanguard and cruicible rank to 3
4) buy and equip legendary armor
5) run the nightfall each week for exotic weapons
6) raid for the best gear in the game

Baseless facts that are easily proven if you simply click through a few pages. Lol, the denial is thick in here.
Denial? What do you gain by derailing a thread that is about tips on how to survive in Destiny? Explain that besides absolute boredom on your behalf.

My best advice is just make all 3 classes
Like vanilla Diablo 3, you'll probably end up with a legendary or exotic at some point for class that you don't even currently play

This is bad advice. No one has time to gear all three classes.

The real advice is to level three characters of the same class, so you have two extra rolls each week.

Your anger at what I think of a thread is hilarious. It's not like I even said something negative, just matter of fact.

So your argument is that the OT isn't only people looking for other raiders because PSN was down for a few days and they complained about that instead during that timeframe? How again does that prove that it's a great game?

Top Bottom
