Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

If you listen to the podcast though there's no way you would have known Wolfenstein was Drew's favorite game of the year.

If he had fought for it at all by mentioning it was then it might have been enough to shoot down Brad.

Jason said he had the most fun with Wolfenstein as well. These guys are producers, I won't fault them for not making a fuss. I'm guessing they were sub conscious of their place as "not real" editors.

These guys could be there for days arguing about which game is better than this other game. Eventually they are going to make concessions. Things like how passionate one argues for a personal favorite game is going to matter. Shadow of Mordor did absolutely nothing for me but if it's their game of the year it's their game of the year. I enjoyed the hours and hours of game discussion and am not just looking for validation of my own opinion in some arbitrary top 10 list that comes at the end of that.

Yep and he had his chance when they went around the room and he picked Divinity because he hadn't played it and didn't want to pick between the others he liked. I think the issue is they compiled their personal lists after the podcasts so Drew probably hadn't decided which game was going to be his game of the year or maybe when he was compiling it he made it number one as a fuck you to Brad for keeping it out of the top 10.

I don't think they had their personal lists done at that point. Judging from twitter, most of them finished those later.

This is also a thing. Jeff mentioned a few times after they filmed the GOTY stuff that he hadn't finished his. And I believe Alex mentioned at some point during those GOTY podcasts that he felt Bayonetta 2 edged out Jazzpunk in his personal list but ultimately he swapped them.

I shouldn't have entered this thread before listening to all of the podcasts. Destiny got into the top 10? Are you fucking kidding me? Can I expect a Brad filibuster?

Yep, the podcasts were recorded early December. Brad at one point said that he cant wait for the Destiny expansion which releases iirc today or tomorrow. Dark Below released Dec 9th which also coincides with the Bombcast dates when the whole gang were in San Fran

Alex in the last bombing the AM, said he was compiling the GOTY lists, which was only a week ago

I also almost gave up on Destiny pre lvl20. Post lvl20 is when the game felt good. But Brad is defending the Destiny that exists now. Destiny after all these patches:

- Level 31 gear is available in any faction at the tower. Before you needed RNG for Vault of Glass just to get level 30 gear.
- Carry 10 bounties instead of 5, less visits to the tower. Bounties offer extra rewards.
- Voice chat is accessible in Crucible and Vanguard Strikes. If you can't find people for Raids, ask the strangers you're playing with.
- legendary and exotics engrams are easier to gain than before.
- spirit blooms, iron relics, helium coils, spin metals can be purchased with vanguard or crucible marks so you don't have to do so much grinding

None of these things existed when it launched which sounds like what everyone else was playing then. . . except Brad.

None of those things fix Destiny's main flaw; Korean Free-to-Play MMO tier mission design.

Wasn't really a filibuster so much as Brad saying "but, guuuyys! It's MAGICAL AND... SO GOOD! You'd understand if only you played it for a hundred hours..." Jeff half-nodded, presumably asleep, and everyone else took it as a sign of agreement. Then the deed was done.

He Helms Deeped it and used Gandalf's army to attack any game that could deservedly kick it off the top 10.

But really, at some point after 4 hours these guys are tired and wanna wrap it up. Anyone could probably brute force their pet game onto the list if determined enough, and Brad was.

Yep, Patrick fought valiantly for it's cause....but it was a lone fight. It was actually Patrick's stream series of the original BoI which got me back into it. That game never really clicked for me until I watched someone else better than me play the game

Now I watch Northernlion's streams...that guy is just insane, but the amount of time he has put into it, you'd expect that.

It's funny, NL gets a lot of shit for being bad at BoI :P

Well damn, I wish I was as bad as him at it then. I'm currently sitting on 10 mom's heart kills (I unlock Cathedral/sheol on next mom's heart kill)

I still consider myself rubbish at the game, and I am in awe watching NL play with some of the stuff he pulls off with ease.

What do we think would win GOTG at Giant Bomb? Mass Effect 2?

Dunno bout just the Bombcast crew, but for me the original God of War is still probably the best experience I've had. I'm not even saying it is fundamentally a better game than everything else, but boy if a game ever did meet the definition of "greater than the sum of its parts" it was that one.

I liked God of War 2 and 3, but nothing ever got to the heights of that Hydra roaring at me. It is also the game that for me felt like the first huge budget HD game even though it was on Ps2 and not HD.

And no one will agree with my choice for spot #2 but I don't care.

After that, my personal list is

2. Pokemon Blue
3. World of Warcraft
4. Freedom Fighters
5. Super Mario World

I don't think you're understand what Game of the Generation is implying. Last generation is talking about the PS3/360/Wii and likely PSP/DS

Burnout Paradise (Jeff) vs Red Dead Redemption (Brad, Dan)

Maybe I'm misremembering, but they seemed to be flying threw the awards sections compared to most other years until we got to the game of the year award. At least I'm not alone in feeling that 2014 has been a really down year for games which is what I took away from most of the discussions. Everyone seemed to fall into their comfort zones for the games they propped up for the final discussion. Can't say I blame them as that's how I've been of late.

Yeah, Fizzie actually had an interesting "arc" in the game that was pretty funny. I think the reason I mention it is because I vaguely remember Brad talking about it as well and liking it. I could be wrong though.

There's no way a GOTG can happen. That debate would get too real. With the intense passion those guys have for very different games of the last generation makes me feel like they would never find a winner to agree on.

I think they way you'd do it is to not order anything, and just look for 15 or 20 games.

Oh elaborate this for me so I can see the light! Cause last time I checked, people hated relying too much on RNG, farming materials, lack of open communication, and match making. All of which Bungie fixed except the last one.

Oh. Of course they got Troy Baker during the recap video.

Dan really nailed it with the caneos. I think it was Jeff who said that each member was responsible for their own bits, and Dan just nailed it. If I ranked it though, Brad would be in first place because of BLACKHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLE! And the leaf eating.

I really enjoyed listening to the game of the year discussions, although I don't think I ever noticed how much pull alex seems to have in making decisions before, and it felt kind of weird, but then again the last one was a year ago so I probably just don't remember.

Got a lot of good laughs listening to the deliberations too, was great. Some of the day mario cried stuff was hit or miss for me, but some of it was really cool and hilarious.

Alex got steamrolled last year. Near the end of the discussion both 3D world and something else, I can't remember what it was right now, got pulled out from under him. Also this was the first year where he was actually in the same room as the others during the discussion which makes it a lot easier to make an impassioned argument in favor of something. Also also, his enjoyment of Nintendo games would usually have gotten trampled but this time he had Dan to back him up.

Just finished this up. Man oh man it was hard to listen to the arguments for Destiny being on the list. Would've been better just to give everybody one unquestioned pick rather than go through that kindof protracted argument that boiled down to that being the case anyway. Nobody dies on mountains, and the fights become about whats left of the list.

That said, I do think the end result makes for an interesting list, though it'd be even better if it was the top 20 games of 2014. And this just doubles down on the fact that I can never go to these guys for driving game recommendations, but that's fine.

And again, here's wishing Patrick the best in whatever he does next, and a hearty thanks to the Giant Bomb dudes for showing how this particular sausage was made. The end result list is only a shadow of the myriad perspectives, heaping praise and heated arguments that you get from listening to the deliberations.

Much deserved. You might not like the other games in the list either,
Not on the basis of any actual argument. Even Brad acknowledged issue after issue after issue after issue - it was honestly painful to see the logic at work. And Diablo has far more handwrought loot that Destiny by a mile - even if aspects of those legendaries are up to random rolls. All the talk about Destiny's loot being good in any way (the loot itself and how you go about acquiring it) just seemed like crazy talk. Brad having fun with it for a long while was what it came down to, and at least that assertion made sense ;p

Doing two podcasts a week and more on camera stuff with Vinny has done wonders for Alex. He was also on the right side of history when it came to Jazzpunk, Mario Kart and Destiny which makes him the best.

Wolfpack 4 life.

Really glad that Brad got Destiny on the top 10. The discussion was as heated as I hoped it would be.

As someone who thinks Destiny is boring as fuck I had no doubt the game would be on GB's top 10. I honestly thought it would win(?) Most Disappointing too. Its a weird ass game.

I want exactly that so bad though

One single 8 hour episode with no resolution

Ends in a fade out with Dan just yelling "Super Mario Sunshine" over and over

Meh, Shadow of Mordor winning GOTY says more about how supposedly awful of a year this was than Destiny cracking the top 10.

I thought 2014 was great, but you would never get that idea from listening to the last 5 days of podcasting.
