Need Advice!! How can I steal $200 from a GAF member for heroin as soon as possible?

Well, I've had one hell of a month and, due to unforeseen medical expenses, I need $200 to pay my already past due electric bill.

Before anyone says anything, I'm not looking for loans or donations from gaffers, but I do need advice on what to do. I feel like the majority of you guys are adults who have their shit together really well and probably know a lot more than I do about finances.

Anyway, I'm in college and have student loans. I am employed, but I get paid monthly which won't be for another 4 weeks. I have no credit and already tried to get a credit card this week but was denied. My current account balance is negative. (-_-)

What do you guys suggest I do? I need to come up with money as soon as possible. The bill was due 12/26 and it was already past due.

And for what it is, I have a lot of medical expenses (I'm in poor health) and I already have sold anything I had to pay for my scripts and doctors visits. All my game consoles and games went already :(

Any financial gurus have any advice for me?

Ask your family or close friend for a loan (or a cash advance from your employer). Then figure out a budget and work from there. Like weight loss its a process and there is no magical pill to immediately fix your life.

EDIT: In case anyone is just joining us

Bringing this thread back from the grave.

So I ended up lending this guy $200. He was supposed to pay it back 5 days ago and has so far ignored my PMs asking him about it.

I've got his full name, address, and home phone number, but I don't really know how that can help me get my money back.

Any advice?

And before you go telling me how I was asking for it and whatnot... Yeah, I'm naive and expect people to be good people. Luckily potentially losing this $200 won't bankrupt me or anything, but I mean, it's still $200 and I'd still love to have it back...

Have you tried calling the electric company and explain to them what is going on? They will probably put you on a payment plan(budget) to get the bill payed eventually.

You're in the US, right? Look on craigslist for odd jobs you can do. You should be able to make your $200 in a couple or few days this way.

Also, as Ravijn said, call the electric company if you haven't, and ask for any possible extension or payment plan.

First step is to talk to your employer and see about getting an advance on pay. It's fucking ludicrous that you're getting paid monthly.

It sounds like you're hemorrhaging money right now so I would absolutely not suggest a pay-day loan if you've considered it. Unless things drastically change for you that will lead you into a very nasty debt trap.

Seriously though -

This is the first thing you should do.

Lottery tickets. Buy 50 $1 scratch offs. 1 in every 10 will win $10+. 5 in every 25 will win $25. And 1 in every 50 will win $100. Do the math. That's $200 minimum.

I second this, when I was in college and behind on my bill they let me work out a payment plan with them that kept the lights and the heat on.

Also, if you have a child or someone elderly in your home they cannot shut off your electricity in the winter time I believe but you should speak with them.

In my experience it takes a many missed bills before they shut off your power. At the very least you should call your electic company to explain the situation.

Can you work with ANY design programs?

Indesign? Photoshop? After Effects? Look on craigslist and try to find any logo creation or editing job in the gigs section. Those pay anywhere from $75-200 for something that can be done in a night to 3 days. It's can be difficult to land one. But if you apply to 50 ads, 1 or 2 might get back to you. I've paid for last minute bills this way a number of times.

As for any other quick money... well... :/

Final a busy intersection and hold a sign asking for money. You just need 10 people to hand you $20.

Call the electric company up and setup a payment plan. It's pretty easy and they'll work with you. Under no circumstances get a payday loan. Just don't.

Also, considering giving plasma to create a steady form of income. Most donations pay $30 - $40 per session and you can give twice a week.

Just to echo what's already been said, call the electric company. They'll work with you because eventually getting paid is better than not getting paid at all. Talk to a friend or family member who might be able to help. There are a number of agencies that can help. Catholic Charities is the first one I can think of.

If you have anything you can sell, sell it. Post a listing on Craigslist. There are a number of ways to get past this minor setback.

In this order:

Talk to the electric company
Sell video games, dvds and old clothes, furniture, jewelry etc at game stop, resell shop etc.
Donate plasma and or blood
Do odd jobs for local businesses
Borrow from friends
Do odd jobs for Craig's list users.

I don't know if this order I'd accurate.

Your electric provider can likely move your due date, but I wasn't able to convince them to allow payments.

A couple of years ago, my fiance lost his job while I was on leave with illness, and we were absolutely torn for cash for one month. It was our last month on our lease, and we had no idea what to do.

I cut off my 2-3 foot long hair, sold my Wii U, and fixed a couple of computers.
We used /r/loans on Reddit for the rest, now /r/borrow, and asked for $200 each between the two of us. Half went to the remainder of rent, and the rest paid our electric. We paid back maybe $15 in interest a couple weeks later. It was a serious lifesaver. This was awhile back, so YMMV, but the sub still seems very active. We only had to give proof of income and identification. The person who loaned to us e-mails me from time to time to see how we are. Insanely awesome community.

Alternatively, sell your gaming things. Ask your neighbors, CL, or local businesses if they'd like any work done.

If you're really worried about it, call them up. Honestly though it would be out of the ordinary if they did anything because you missed one payment, and I certainly can't see them shutting you off.

Yeah, I actually posted on /r/borrow just before this. No replies yet though.

Get a part time restaurant gig (back or front of the house). When you need money, no job is too bad to your own doing.

It only took about 24 hours total for us to work everything out. I think our first response was within 10 hours, then just getting all of the details sorted out for the rest.

Sell a game system.

Seriously though..you may get a small late fee, but they aren't going to shit off your power for one missed or late bill.

Definitely call the electric company. As far as making some extra money, how long do you have? I've done a bit of online work on the side before. Amazon runs a site Mechanical Turk that you can work on and make some extra money. I think it takes 2-3 days before you can do your first one and it's not the best at first. A lot of the jobs won't let you do them until you have completed 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 of them before. Also you won't make very much per hour, like at all. Use the waiting period to do research on how to make your time more efficient. I've also had success with Usertesting. There isn't the waiting period and the normal pay is $10 for about 15 minutes of work. The main problem is jobs there are scarce and the competition is high so keep a window of it open to catch a job as soon as it pops up. There are many online jobs for writing articles but my writing skills aren't up to scratch so I can't personally vouch for them. There is a thread on here about online jobs.

Even with both of these it would still be hard to make 200 very quickly but if you have something to sell or can get a loan for 100 of it or so but you are still a little short I would recommend doing these.

Yeah, I'm already an MTURK member. I've been doing it all day but still only have made like $20.
