Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

Sony trying to the good news out in front of a potentially underwhelming NPD month?

A shame it has nothing to do with great games though.

A $400 hypebox with barely any games fueled on the hopes and dreams of millions?

Wunderbar, indeed.

Assuming that butchers job of a translation means that there are 10.9 million PS+ subscribers...

This is a terrible result.
PS+ is without a doubt the best gaming proposition in the history of mankind, and to only have 10% of your PS3 & PS4 user base on it is embarrassing, for both Sony & humanity in general :)

Ah, right.

Is that PS+ number confirmed to be for all Sony consoles users (PS4/PS3/Vita)?

Fuck that's a big number!

PS4 when WW sales are factored in (as they always should be) is pretty much unstoppable this gen now. MS will place behind them. Not that it matters, both are selling incredibly well and will largely be getting the same games, but it's nice to see a healthy industry.

I suppose. But do you see that Gif from gametrailers showing Ps2's utter dominance in Gen 6?

While I doubt they get quite THAT dominance again, they can come close with aggressive pricing. Stealing a lot of the potential Xbox One install base would mean you have millions more buying Ps4 games.

As it stands now, I predict a 55/35/10 generation (Ps4/X1/WiiU), which is great for Sony but I think they could totally take up to 60% or more market share if they got aggressive.

All this before any really good exclusives have come out too. Crazy.

10% is way, way too high for the wii U.

If we put the PS4 at 120 million lifetime, and the Xbox One at about 40 million (which are both probably slightly on the conservative side), the WiiU would need to sell somewhere around 16 or 17 million units to hit 10%.

It's not getting anywhere close to that.

Soon there will be 20 million machines out there that will be capable of delivering a compiling and hopefully affordable VR experience.
All according to Keikaku*

Wow. How does this stack up historically with other consoles in the same time frame? I'd imagine this still places PS4 as the best selling console of all time.

if the ps4 sold that many with no games, imagine how much they're going to sell with all the compelling games coming out this year.

I wonder if Japan feels like they are missing the boat with their lukewarm reaction to the fastest selling PlayStation in history.

Probably not. There's not much for Japanese system sellers right now.

Anyone know what the interest level for Bloodborne is in Japan?

Ah, right.

Is that PS+ number confirmed to be for all Sony consoles users (PS4/PS3/Vita)?

It has to be since they don't distinguish between one platform and another.

But look at it this way, they went from having something like 4 million PS+ subs at the beginning of 2014 to 10+ million at the end. I have to imagine all of that growth was due to PS4. If you look at that as the attach rate of the PS+, it looks far more impressive.

Now now, we'll have that Hyper clothes-ripping Neptunia and Akiba'sTrip before that.. And on a serious tone. Hell yes! Bring on the RPGs! Port Zesty Bandai!

Where do I know this dude from?

Isn't that Bobby Lashley? :lol

That's the secret though, Sony sells this much PS4 with the promise of games to come. The potential of greatness. They need to stretch this more 2-3 years and don't release any game at all. The ultimate blue balls strategy. 200 millions PS4 sold by the end of the generation and in the last year release a flood of games.

This is super cool. Congrats to Sony! It's truly impressive how much PS4 is selling without the need of a price-drop or a game that can be considered a system seller. Sony has this generation on their bag and I hope they can do wise things with that that can benefit the entire industry. I still can't find a proper reason (game) that make me go ahead and purchase a PS4. Hope that changes this year.

I'm starting to think Uncharted 4 may outsell Halo 5

Haha yeah, I'm a heavy JRPG gamer, as of now my Vita and 3DS is taking the spotlight.

I don't think I'll buy a PS4 for Persona 5 since it's still available on the PS3, but I have a good feeling about the PS4 and it's JRPG suppprt, we might see less titles from smaller studios since they usually migrate to the handhelds but I'm really excited to see JRPGs tailored for PS4 in mind.

Edit: Being the Fatlus that I am, I'd probably buy Persona 5 again when I get my PS4

Pretty sure the wii outsold it in the same time frame- but the PS4 is extremely unlikely to implode and have all of it's support vanish 3 years in.

Astounding and shockingly awesome numbers that inspire optimism for the health of both the PlayStation platform moving forward and the console industry as a whole. Congrats Sony! Anyone know how this compares to the speed and pace of the PS2? As the fastest selling console of all-time that's the key benchmark.

I'd love to see a launch aligned graph of the PS2 versus the PS4. Surely 20 million consoles sold is not too far into the future now.

Wii was heavily supply costrained, though. If it had bigger shipments, it would've done quite better. PS4 isn't in that situation (I know it has been mentioned Europe could have suffered shortages problems, but Wii was suffering WW). Still, even if it's now behind the Wii, this is a very good result, hardware wise.

Do we have a good recap of tie-ratios for consoles at the same time after the release?

~$450 global ASP vs $300 global ASP.

You can't just look at units in isolation, dollars spent is almost as important a measure and the PS4 is probably driving more revenue and value for publishers than the Wii did at the same stage.

Dec 31 2006 - Dec 31 2007 the Wii sold 20.14m

And flamed out within a couple years due to lack of 3rd party support.

The Ps4 hasn't quite matched the Wii craze, but Ps4 will in all likelihood not burn out either and will continue to sell strongly. It will pass Wii's lifetime sales.

AND, it costs more than launch Wii did, though I haven't adjusted for inflation.
