Amazing how playing it safe won this generation. The rest just blundered straight out of the gate.

We'll see how much software it has in 2015.

I think a large part of PS4's success is down to timeliness and simply looking like the best thing on the market to the casual observer- something Sony is and always has been very, very good at. Gamers were gagging for a new generation years ago, and we're seeing not only Sony reaping that benefit, but also capitalising on their 'good guy' image in the wake of MS' mistakes, and also going in hard with lame propaganda in the form of their 'for the gamers' campaign, which seems to be working despite sluggish (to date) efforts regarding software and firmware. In fact, despite making me a great console, it really doesn't feel like Sony's done a lot else on the gaming front to deserve these sales. But like I said, it is a great console, and one with a no doubt great future.

It really does look like we're in for a repeat of sorts of generation 6, at least regarding the disparity between respective competitors.

if the ps4 sold that many with no games, imagine how much they're going to sell with all the compelling games coming out this year.

Gran Turismo PS4 hasnt even been announced. If polyphony delivers, it could be huge.

Wii shipped 20M. If PS4 number is sold- through, it is at least on par with wii launch aligned.

It is an interesting point. I'm certain gaming has grown significantly since 2006 regardless. I'd guess that as more good games hit the machine there will be a lot more sales than we have seen thus far on all platforms

Wasn't it 10 million like just the other day? Anyway I'm kind of surprised considering 99% of its library can be played on PS3 or PC... do Dell/HP/etc PC's still not include graphics cards?

Awesome numbers. 2015 is going to be even better for them I reckon. Hopefully Japan (and maybe China) will join the "lets buy some PS4s"-party, like the rest of us. Also I expect a pricedrop regardless how well it's selling. This gen it's all about subscribtions, so the moment Sony can lower the price of PS4 without eating a loss they should.

Astounding and shockingly awesome numbers that inspire optimism for the health of both the PlayStation platform moving forward and the console industry as a whole. Congrats Sony! Anyone know how this compares to the speed and pace of the PS2? As the fastest selling console of all-time that's the key benchmark.

I'd love to see a launch aligned graph of the PS2 versus the PS4. Surely 20 million consoles sold is not too far into the future now.

The PS2 sold 50 odd million consoles AFTER the launch of the PS3. it wasn't just the speed but the untouchable longevity of the thing.

Nothing including the PS4 is going to pull that one off again.

10% is way, way too high for the wii U.

If we put the PS4 at 120 million lifetime, and the Xbox One at about 40 million (which are both probably slightly on the conservative side), the WiiU would need to sell somewhere around 16 or 17 million units to hit 10%.

It's not getting anywhere close to that.

What is Wii U at right now 8 million?

I think it sells another 10 million over 3 years or so, IF Nintendo wakes up and drops it to the $200 price point it should be at.

Very impressive. I wonder if this will be a PS360 scenario where we eventually see a turnaround for Microsoft before overtaking Sony's sales numbers.

Also makes me a bit sad that the Wii U is sitting at about a 3rd (I think) of those sales in 2 years in the market :(

slightly disappointing numbers since they didn't hit 20m but they still did great. not the best ever but these numbers show a very healthy market.

A $400 hypebox with barely any games fueled on the hopes and dreams of millions?

Wunderbar, indeed.

A shame it has nothing to do with great games though.

Should have known this would annoy some of the resident fanboys. Let the salt flow through you.

Great sales so far.

I'm starting to think Uncharted 4 may outsell Halo 5

I think 1st party games from Sony will just see a huge boost in sale in general. We saw this with MS and its first party games due to having a bigger install base during the last gen. Im getting the feeling U4 may not be the last uncharted once Sony looks at the numbers they will definitely get this gen.

Absolutely not. And selling 10 million with what software? everything significant is already out.

Wow...that's a lot of PS4s.

Not really surprising, the PS4 is one hell of a console. Great-looking, great engineering and has the performance to back it up. Nicely done...

PS4 did in one year what took the GameCube an entire generation to do.

That's really something else. The PS4 has quite a healthy future ahead of it.

Yeah, I'm trying to imagine a 2016 with a potential GT7, TLOU2, GOW4, new Guerillia Game, new Media Molecule game and new David Cage game? Could be huge if you ask me.

You just wrote this to be quoted, didn't you?

Hah, man that's just sad.

If a wo/man can't uphold their word they become less than human.

Haha yeah, I'm a heavy JRPG gamer, as of now my Vita and 3DS is taking the spotlight.

I don't think I'll buy a PS4 for Persona 5 since it's still available on the PS3, but I have a good feeling about the PS4 and it's JRPG suppprt, we might see less titles from smaller studios since they usually migrate to the handhelds but I'm really excited to see JRPGs tailored for PS4 in mind.

Edit: Being the Fatlus that I am, I'd probably buy Persona 5 again when I get my PS4

Haha, yeah. Handhelds has definitely taken the top spot for me these years.
I'm getting it on PS4. Remote play has so far worked faultless for me. I'll buy P5 again when it gets its Ruby release on Vita :)

Good.

Now bring in more Japanese games. And drop PS+ subscription requirement for online multiplayer.

Please.

Yeah! Man if Japan could just drop mobile for a sec it would be sooooo happy.

Not happening. Paid online is a thing. Accept it :|

Why would you say something so horrible when there are so many who reneged on their word? I feel like Edmond Dantes as it is. If this was the time of the samurai, there'd be blood everywhere because of all the dishonour and injustice. I want sudoku.

I hope this means a return to the glory days of the PS1+2. Last gen had a few great games but wasn't nearly as memorable for me, I didn't even turn my PS3 on between summer 2010 and fall 2012.

European sales must be enormous. Over 10 million.

Nope. Almost 7m in the US, 1m in Japan and 10m in Europe? Which leaves the rest of the world with 500k? PS4 has been confirmed to be selling a lot more than any console has ever done in the rest of the world so that's pretty much impossible. Should be more like almost 7m US, ~8.5m Europe, 1m Japan, 2m ROW

We still can't quite cut the X1 out. It may never "win" but it'll be a serious player for the generation. But yeah, everyone knew the Wii U was never going to hit anything close to this. No surprise there.

Maybe in America... worldwide I'm ready to call it!

I think what matters to them is that they make a profit, not that they beat Sony.

I doubt the entire Xbox "project" will ultimately turn a profit. I know they sunk a whole lot of money into the OG Xbox and last I saw they weren't even close to recouping their expenses. Do we have any figures from Microsoft showing the cost/profit of the Xboxes?

Either way, profit is the ultimate aim sure but Nintendo and Microsoft are surely envious of these sorts of sales regardless of what the official word is.

Conflicting opinions already! By then there will likely be well over twice the amount of PS4's sold over XB1, maybe even 3 times. Its certainly possible.

Halo 3 sold 2.5 ML in its first day only in US. Uncharted 3 sold 700k in 4 weeks in the US.

Uncharted 4 will be bigger 99,9 % but Halo is still Halo even if XB1 is "dead" outside UK and US.

Shit post is shit post.

Same could be said about the XBO.

Great stuff! I predicted ~18 million by the end of the year and I though I was being a bit too conservative. With a price drop that number would be over 20 million.
