Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

This. I highly doubt UC4 will sell more than Halo.
It'll be interesting. Uc4 with the way higher market share, but Halo with way bigger marketing and cache with the public. I think neither will move too much hardware, but I'd expect a higher attach rate with Halo. Close on WW sales though.

you believe it was Nintendo faithful in general saying that kinda shit in here? Does 2+2 = 17 over where you're at?

Yeah it would be unfair to apply that to an entire fanbase. It was just a few very vocal individuals that as sad as it sounds would prefer that the entire console industry be failing rather than accept a reality where the market had rejected just Nintendo for reasons specific to Nintendo. How spiteful of them.

That just sounded like PR hype train. There was never indication of ps4 being hard to find.

Until we get some proper euro numbers I wouldnt take sonys claim of sold to customers as gospel. Either way there's no doubt they did well and are maintaining their position as market leader.

Come on Japanese developers. It's time to jump on the bandwagon... I need some Tales. And where the hell is Kingdom Under Fire at?

Japanese developers have bigger problems than install base. With a lot of talent splitting off of failing larger studios to form their own theres hope the console market will rebuild itself. Going to take some time though.

Get out of here Amirox. We all know indie games are non-games and only AAA games or exclusive AAA games count for anything.

But you know, the Order looks BORING, I don't like InFamous, Knack is for kids, Drive Club is broken, and Uncharted is a Tomb Raider rip off.

Also I don't play indies, those are for losers. I want AAA and only ones where you kill things with guns.

Wow, congrats Sony. That's a huge number and this upcoming year is going to be an awesome one for PS4. Glad I'm part of the 18.5m.

These last few months have been something real.

I think it was the massive third party games this holiday season plus the sales on PS4 games as recent as Shadow of Mordor.

Good news for Sony. This would have been much more balanced out if Microsoft had not gone all in with their DRM and TV bullshit. I guess Sony just gave the people what they wanted. Remember that Sony didn`t have to drop the price on the PS4 to achieve this, and their 2015 gaming line up looks stronger.

This is the first thing to come to my mind reading the thread title:
its-not-enough-that-i-should-succeed-others-should-fail-kevin-chang.jpg

What if I buy a AAA game at $15 6 months after release? :P

Yeah, sorry, I had that in my post then thought I misunderstood the thread and erased most of my post and didn't mention that again. Sales are obviously a huge deal for attach rate. But 3 5$ indies still beat the 15$ AAA. The big deal is that Sony has way more of these indies to sell at any cost. More games on the whole.

WOW Great Job Sony, Lets see how things are By the Time March Comes around this is going to be an even better year for gamers than Last year

As others have pointed out, they are on the way.
Before Kawano moved on to another department from gaming division in Japan he said the stunning sales opening of PS4 in Western market really convinced some Japanese third party devs to move to PS4 faster. At that time I was thinking that was just a PR talk but after last year's pre-TGS Sony conference I was proven wrong.

This is especially amazing to me because they've achieved this with a lineup that was perceived to be lackluster. Their software can only go up from here. Phenomenal job by Sony!

LOL! You think Sony could be lying about this?

That kind of comment has always been unique based on the commentator. Sony's current lineup of PlayStation 4 exclusive games could be lackluster to one and balls-to-the-walls amazing for another. Blanket approaches are so annoying, and why I never wrote anything like that for my site in regards to PlayStation 4's lineup.

Both will move hardware for sure. Sony should be aiming to sell 8 million copies of UC4 LTD. They would be very happy with those numbers. Anything more will be a bonus.

Honestly, this doesn't hold any truth with the majority of console buyers. Most people buy the console to play the latest multiplatform games. I've yet to encounter somebody who has said "the PS4 has no games" or something similar.

The perception is self-created on internet forums by console warriors.

Perhaps you'd feel better if I amended my statement to "...perceived to be lackluster by a notable portion of the gaming community."

As a Netflix machine?

Not saying that the Wii didnt have the library (Wii library is filled with hidden gems) - but people who got full use of the system are a minority.
I'm not bashing Nintendo, I'm "bashing" the Wii. The two consoles were sold on two completely different terms and everyone I knew had their Wiis in a closet a year after owning it. Obviously the Nintendo faithful are going to enjoy it, but that wasn't the majority of the consumer base.

Nothing I'm saying is controversial btw, yet I was quoted three times already.

Wii attach rate was 9 games. People liked it well enough. Closet anecdotes aren't better than PS4 no games arguments.

Lol so now Sony, the only ones on the position to know real sale numbers, are lying? You do know they have to report to various agencies their sales information and shit like that. Lying about profits and sales is sort of illegal

Based on...what, exactly?

PS4 did just as well in November as any other leading system. Better than PS2 and 360's 2nd Novembers too.

Based on hopes and dreams.

Anyway, I predicted at the start of 2014 that they'd ship 15 million PS4's, so they crushed my expectations. Congrats Sony. I'll be a bit more daring this time and predict 40 million by the end of 2015. I think the 2015 lineup and a price drop should boost sales significantly further than they were in 2014.

Mine was one of those in that 4.1m.

Hopefully this gives publishers -particularly those owning or working with Japanese developers- the confidence they haven't exactly been showing in abundance since this generation started.

Konami, you for one have nothing to worry about now.

That lethargic-at-best domestic sales is still a problem; they'd be making games largely for the foreign audience, and that has rare in the past. We'll see, I guess.

Exactly. And this is precisely why Wii U is not selling despite having what is said to be the best library. Some on GAF will argue black and blue that Nintendo doesn't need third parties but they do if they want to sell consoles on the level Sony currently is. The Wii audience is not coming back, they've been lost to mobile and freemium/99c games forever.

Seems a bit silly to word it like that, takes all the credit from Xbox. It was Microsoft who realized the importance of online and correctly invested in it. They also realized the importance of an easy to develop for platform, third party relations, the XBLA program, the Kinect which became the de-facto "Wii 2", etc.
MS also had the slowest-selling console of the generation. If anything, it's Nintendo's honor you should be standing up for.

Perhaps you'd feel better if I amended my statement to "...perceived to be lackluster by a notable portion of the gaming community."

Still doesn't really hold much water because the vast majority of the gaming community is gonna be playing mostly multuplat games...

And those games run better on the PS4...

Yes, when you focus purely on AAA exclusive titles I'd buy your argument, but to the average gamer, the PS4 is far from starved...

The future of the Xbox brand rests less on its profit/loss ratio and more on where MS thinks its going to take itself as a company over the next 10 years.

I don't think there will be a 4th iteration of the console.

I think there will be a 4th iteration but it will be more of a streaming box than anything IMO. I actually think there is a possibility they will return to the PC. Their focus looks to be more along the lines of creating an "ecosystem" (where you can play the same games/media on your PC, TV, Tablet or Phone) rather than new purpose built console hardware going forwards. They just haven't found the hardware side to be profitable enough to continue down that road for too much longer.

That's my take on it anyway.

For what its worth, Sony has very likely contributed to that mindset with heavily pushing AAA games like God of War and Uncharted, while leaving the middleground dead (hey Wipeout).
It doesn't come out of nowhere.

at the same point in time, nintendo had sold more wiis, more software for the wii, and had a higher attach ratio for the wii than sony did any of those things for the ps4.

Microsoft brand relevance with younger demographics is extremely important to the future of their other consumer products. Sometimes it's ok to eat a bit of a loss in one division in exchange for increased name recognition and mindshare with younger demographics which can translate to increased sales of other products like Surface tablets and Windows phones.

In other words, I don't think it's so cut and dry when it comes to an idea of "make us profits on Xbox or we are killing it."

Haha, I didn't want to say significant, but I wanted to stress that it wasn't some rare opinion. Thanks. :]

It's not some rare opinion but it's also not some majority, not even close (evident enough by the continued sales of the console). It's the minority that seems to think that, the vocal minority.

Agreed with what you said except this. The Wii audience is surely lost, and with Nintendo's current lack of 3rd-party, they're definitely not coming back. But they're not lost forever. With the right gimmick and marketing, another Wii-like success could happen. I personally doubt that it will, but it could.
