Sony announces 18.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles sold WW

I like PS+ this gen so far, it's been giving just launched DD games as freebies, on PS3 I mainly had it for discounts as I usually already had the retail offerings.

Huge bunch of PC gamers are jumping to PS4 when Bloodborne hits, according to the biggest Finnish gaming forum - and the other game is UC4. So it's a sleeper hit/system seller. Somehow people are underestimating its hype, or are just being console warriors (jelly), I don't know.

Though I wonder how many on gaf will upgrade to PS4? I see some people who posted a lot in the Dark Souls threads are absent in Bloodborne threads, not even a comment of what they think how it looks...

If by ROTW, you mean everything outside North America, Europe and Japan, that's very hard to say.

USA is somewhere between 6~6.5M
Japan is close to 1M
UK is between 1.5~2M
Germany and France are each over 1M

That's already at least 11M

Spain + Italy must represent 1M too

Add 1 to 2M for Rest of Europe.

Just to add - PS4 was over 200k before the holidays in Australia

WHAT O_O ??? Seriously?

Its only a guess, The number was shipped in the middle of November, to get the shipments to the retailers to cover the holiday period, it had to have been sent out before then.

they probably had some shipments going out in december to cover Q1 next year, so i expect 10-11m shipped in their numbers in the quarter end call.

" almost "10 millions shipped on november

I don't think Microsoft ever used almost. Their PR says "Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles." Nowhere does it say almost 10 million sold. Semantics, maybe, but almost 10 million consoles shipped implies that current shipments are near 10 million. Shortly means less because we don't know what Microsoft's timetable for shortly is, we don't know how much Microsoft plans to ship in that "shortly" period, and we have a much more vague idea of how many consoles they have shipped currently.

I promised myself I would lend my PS4 to my PCbro in the office in time to make him play+review Bloodborne. First time I've seen him agree to the solution.

And the numbers will blow through the fucking roof the moment big hits like Bloodborne/U4/SF5 are launching. Interesting to see how this evolves during 2015.

I'm a little surprised that it's selling quite as well as it is, given that I don't really feel like it has any 'must have' software yet, but I'm certainly not surprised that it's selling well. It seems about as close to a perfect launch as the games industry has ever had.

Didn't Kaz say over 4 million in Nov & Dec? What's the normal ratio for NA/ROTW for these months?

4.1 million in the "holiday season", which supposedly means November 23 or 24 through January 3 or 4 depending on the region. So actually only a small part of November is included in that number.

Just imagine what will happen when it hits an official $350/299!

This is awesome! I'm very happy PS4 is doing so great.

Congrats, Sony!

So much for the console doom and gloom from the past couple of years.

81.x million.

So double impressed. More than 4 games per owner one year after launch is really good, no? I used to say a lot that greatness still awaits since a lot of games I'm interested in have been pushed to this year or had been launched but end up being a disappointment but it seems that all the lights are green for Sony !

Us alone account for around 60% of XB1 install base. Yea they haven't reached 10 million sold but maybe shipped. But Sony I'm sure Sony has 20 million shipped already if they already sold 18.5 million to consumers.

Those two numbers are up to November NPD. We'll get December NPD next week. It's gotta have passed 10 million.

I am prolly ur neighbor and everyone I know thinks ps+ is fantastic value... Games here are very expensive so getting "free" games monthly for €4 is considered cheapo. These subscription services have a good chance to get eastern Europeans to spend more on games

I also spend a lot on PS+ discounted games ;) For me, PS+ is really a no brainer.

Really depends on the EU holiday business. If it continued to flatline i can see them being at 9-9.5 million, german pal chart for week 51 + 52 look pretty bad.

Sony has added to its global PS4 sales info by confirming the console’s UK success in 2014.

The platform holder says GfK Chart-Track data shows that PS4 was the UK’s best-selling console in 2014 and also the best-selling machine on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November.

It was also the best-selling console in the final week of the year and the best-selling across November and December combined, although it has previously been claimed that Xbox One was the best-selling machine in November alone.

Earlier today Sony said that PS4 has now sold 18.5m PS4s worldwide.

The most recent Xbox One count had the console pegged at 10m shipped, not sold, as of November.

PS4 hit 1m UK sales in early September while Xbox One reached the same total in late November.

Microsoft’s machine enjoyed a few spells of superiority in the UK in 2014, both immediately after yet another UK price cut and for Black Friday week ending November 29th.

Speculation suggests Xbox One put in a strong showing in the US late in the year, although PS4 is almost certain to be crowned as the region’s best-selling 2014 machine.

Completely anecdotal ofcourse, but i couldn't find any PS4's for sale in the netherlands (europe) between christmas and today in any of the retail outlets in my area (toystores, electronic stores, videogame stores). Not sure when they return to stock.

This isn't launch-type of shortages (we couldn't find PS4's for sale until June/July 2014), but it definitely seems that they weren't b*&lsh*tting when talking about supply constraints in europe around christmas season.

Good job, sony. You surely worked hard for it, and your work benefited many.

Damn! What if PS4 wins December's NPD?

Not gonna happen. Sony just hopes it didn't get whacked by 400k again like it did in Nov. If it stayed within 100-200 with all the insane deals MS threw out there, I bet Sony will be very happy keeping their profit margins higher through the holidays.

Congratulations Sony. I hope this results will help Sony as organization.

No matter how successful PS4 get, PlayStation will always remain small part of Sony corporation.

18.5 MILLION.............and not a single price drop in sight.

That's how things get done!

Yeah, they hit a jackpot with great hardware, price, dev support and marketing. All of that created very big customer demand.

Damn! What if PS4 wins December's NPD?
World will continue spinning. :) Whatever happens on Dec NPD in US, numbers are gonna be close.

I have never seen a ps4 in the wild and I don't know anyone who owns one. I'm not as big a gamer as I used to be, so that partially explains it, but I'm really stunned at how will its selling. Meanwhile, I know a few people with xbox one, including me. I live in the US, it's crazy how these things are so friend dependent in the sense that a lot of people are pressured into getting whatever their friends have. I owned a ps3 so I'll pick one up eventually when there is a sale.

Andrew House said PS4 will be inventory challenged in Europe so i am not surprised.
