Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

Cross post from the HaloGAF thread:
343 should consider scrapping the playlist model or rework it.

Do playlists for ranked play
slayer
objective
ffa
bigger teams

Social lists are scrapped for a server browser/custom browser/game finder

Ranked lists would have BR starts and for social it could be set at will.

This would probably costs lot of resources but it is the best thing to do.

Keep social, just put it on the datacenter of our choice. A custom server browser will never be implemented, and I dont really care.

Playlists are needed for both ranked and social imo

People ranting about teammates in team ranked slayer when they go in solo.

Never gets old.

What's really hilarious is I bet the same guys aren't here bitching and moaning when some one on the other team is going 1-12 and they win 50-14.

But as soon as the same happens to their team its all "Gotta go tell GAF how shit some kid today was.".

Nobody gives a fuck. Sorry people. But keep posting how your pro level is being held back. ;)

Once again, within 2 minutes of the game start there is zero point playing because of how incredibly bad my team is...

Garbage-barge.jpg

Not even this could carry these kids...

Oh look, another game that cannot be won because some kid gooses after 10 minutes.

Yup, another game that cannot be won. Amazing ranking system 343.

We understand. One post was enough. Why are you even still playing the beta?

You never come here posting if the opponent team had bad players. Based on simple mathematics - the opponent team will always have the higher chance of having afk's, quitters or whatever. You play against 4 random people - while in your team there are only 3. In the very end and if you play enough games - *your* skill is the deciding factor that is responsible for your rank. You whine about something that has absolutely nothing to do with Halo 5 or even 343I. But well ... Blaming is just the easiest way, hm.

This is why there is nothing wrong with the ranking system

I'd argue it is.

A ranking system is meant to be a reflection of your skill as a player. A system which doesn't actually take your personal performance into account at all is not a working system.

The current system is not a representation of your skill, it's a representation of your luck with matchmaking. And as such in its current form it fails to achieve the most basic premise of a personal rank.

Agree with this. How they'll go about achieving that I don't know though.

If the current system is in place, I think your performance should greatly off-set how much you level down by if you suffer a loss, especially if there is a big discrepancy in your score/assists and that of your team mates.

I feel disadvantaged by playing bumper jumper at times. It seems like descoping is way easier to deal with if you use default.

Gotta love how those miniature nukes pop right in my face. Love watching the killcam to see how it perfectly hounced off 3/4 surfaces to one hit me. /s

Not a huge fan of Breakout. I'm not sure why. I enjoy SWAT enough, but both aren't really what I come to Halo for. The new maps are nice. Holy shit the Lightrifle is NO JOKE. I love that weapon. I find that I'm digging the DMR and Lightrifle more than the BR. Something about the BR just seems off in this game.

I do think they've struck a superb balance with the weapons this go around. ARs and SMGs are totally worth picking up for those close range encounters. I wish weapon swapping was faster. So damn slow.

A friendly reminder....send me your clips people!

Crossposting from HaloGAF:

HaloGAF Halo 5 Beta Montage.

Okay, so I'm going to give this a go.

If you want in, either post your clips here for my attention (I lurk and read every post, every day, because I'm very sad like that) or perhaps more sensibly, PM me.

Format of your post/PM:

Please include your Gamertag

Clip description (Example: Double kill noscope) and then the link (use Xboxclips.com is probably the easiest way)

If you have what I would describe as a blooper clip (i.e something funny rather than skilled gameplay) send them too - if there's enough, I'll do a two part montage.

I'll collect clips from everyone right up until the end of the beta, then get straight to work.

:D

Also, feel free to suggest a good name for the thing.

yep.

My thoughts. I put in around 8 hrs so far. Took a good hr or two to get the feel of it. Once I learned the moves and stopped sprinting everywhere, I started to love the game. I just use sprint to get to a weapon, then I do my patented walk the outskirts of the map and pick up garbage kills. This is definitely a team game. Going solo will net you a few kills, but if the other team communicates well or sticks together, then you're doomed.
Ads don't bother me at all, sprinting I don't care if they leave it or not, ground pound is fine, thrusters are great, the slide I did once on accident so that's useless for me. All in all the game is fun. I'd like to say it's my favorite halo mp since 2, but I need to see the rest of the maps and weapons before I make that bold claim. I can say without a doubt that the mp is a lot better than 4 and I'm looking forward to the release later this year.

I also like the kda. I'm glad my assists are getting recognized.

Just tried my luck at ground and pound. Ehh, I was hitting people dead on their face but most of the time it broke shield and got me killed. Is the only way to OHKO to charge it fully?

This is the most fun I've had with a ranking system. I really like how it's win/losses. I have had so many games decided in the last few moments, it's been great. It's also cool to see the game take into account the opposing team's rank as well.

I think it can be a little bit more fine tuned when it comes to slayer, especially when it comes to evaluating your performance in lost games. For example right now, I am about 14 hours into the Beta. Almost all of it lone wolf. ~50% wins. KD hovering at 1. And I am bronze T1. I dont really care about ranks much so I am not stressed but it feels like with those stats I should be a little bit higher. But I literally move one step forward and one step back.

/Shrug.

But I feel its really gonna shine in Objective gametypes. I think.

50% win/loss is the target convergence for a ranking system.

What the hell is with all this bitching about bad teams? Have you ever played an online game? If you want a good team consistently you have to get a group of decent friends to play with. Its that simple.

Yeah but @ 50% you are literally not moving past the very first division of the ranking system. I feel that it should make some allowance to individual skill.

Otherwise people will just stop going into any ranked gametype without a full party. I dont think they want that.

Sure everything can almost always improve. However, you win about half your games and lose half. Isn't that what MM is supposed to do? Even if you’re onyx or semi pro the ideal, I would think, is to be always evenly matched. I know I have had a few games that were one sided but I would say the vast majority of games I have played have been decided by < 5-7 points. This to me has been awesome, to always be in the thick of things. Also I can't remember having this many come from behind wins. This is all just on my experience of course.

I do not care for rank as much as I care about the quality of the games I'm in. I could be in Iron and be content with just being competive with other Iron players. The SR progession is enough for me to rank up and get better Armor etc. This is enough for me others probably not. lol

The Ranking system is better than I originally thought, and it makes sense to me more now that you gain or lose points depending on a win/loss with slight variability based on your performance. I still think it would be more helpful for random matchmaking if the person that goes first on the losing team doesn't lose points. It would also be nice if the loss of points for all players on the losing team is less severe if there is a quitter, and AFK players are a problem right now but I'm sure that one will be fixed.

Basically I think the ranking has the right idea with a few kinks to be worked out.

Edit: one more thing, people saying "find people to get on better teams if you're annoyed with being mismatched" are missing the point of ranking, in my opinion. Ranking is there to help you match up against players of equivalent skill; if it's not doing that well then it's not working right.

Yeah but I am not complaining about the Matchmaking. Thats working pretty nicely. I was just talking about the ranking system.

As I said, I think it could use some minor retooling. Its pretty decent otherwise. Better than the 1-50 system IMO.

It's my understanding that the ranking system helps dictate MM, to a certain degree any way. You are ranked and placed with hopefully others of similar rank. I know there are some time out rules but I believe that is how that works. This is another reason KD isn't always the best way to go, I could have hope I would have a really high KD against iron players but against Semi-pro/Pro not so much. It's why I like this system so much. Again, I’m just going off of my experience. I am sure 343 is collecting a lot of data to see how things shake out.

They really do need to explain the system a lot better. I have only gotten a feel for it by reading the twitter account of the guy who implemented/created it.

That means the division you are in is the correct division. If you are winning more than you are losing you will move up. At some point you should reach a point where you are losing and winning in equal amounts and thus are correctly ranked. 50% win/loss is the target.

I solo que'd for about 4-5 matches of Slayer last night, and it was the easiest games I've had of the beta. I lost a couple, but overall the competition in those games was no where near what I face when I que with a party. I think the system works from my personal experience. No system is ever going to prevent some kid from going negative every game.

I also don't understand why most of you run straight to your PC every time you get one of those kids on your team, but eh, whatever.
