Indie Games 2015 [January] Now Voting - Post 305!

Intersting how the aboved mentioned Desert Ashes seems to pretty much be a rebranded Mecho Wars (advance wars clone that was initialy released on ios.)
Developpers have different names, but the games seem quite identical.

Nope. Reading on Steam, says the boss levels and story aren't in the iPad version

Hm, maybe because the Boss levels have that timing element to it sometimes, which might get a bit messy on the tablets, but still weird.

Awesome thread as always.

Any opinions on "Law Breaker" or "Within Deep Sorrows"? Those both caught my eye. I'll probably check out those sometime this week and report back, sir!

Haha great, looking forward to those :)

I guess this might be the best place to ask this question: Does anyone know when the Fighting Game Yatagarasu is coming out? I've been waiting for this for a while now.

They still list it as releasing in 2014 on their own website and the last update is from ... october? Not sure what to take from this.

I just watched the trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO9QegeWSqw

and...wat.

I have no clue what this is supposed to be. Any hints?

it's kind of a 3d 8 bit Metal Gear type stealth RPG. swords and guns and finding loot on the ground, collecting coins for killing enemies, leveling, some crafting.

But of course it's all in Japanese, so I can't understand a damned thing.

You're a girl agent in a post-apocalyptic city post war, fighting with the resistance or some shit

this might be a better example: http://youtu.be/-TTgqzO7Lb8?t=5m44s

Oh wow, I want to play that too. That looks super good. How does it play without the language knowledge?

Already on page 2! These threads haven't progressed like that in a while. Off to a good start for 2015

Yup, good start :) Hopefully, we have some more people in 2015 sitting around the Indie-campfire with us ;)

I'll have more in-depth thoughts (and a video) tomorrow on Drift Stage, but damn, this has potential to be a fun throwback.

Considering all the attention it currently gets, I should probably add it to the current month. Might as well include it. Looking forward to trying it.

One can look at the wiki to identify item names and try to recognize stuff, but good luck following the plot. I just mainly try sneaking up on soldiers to stab them in the back. I haven't even found a shop yet, so no guns, or useful items.

In motion you say?

Oh my goodness this looks amazing.

So I've played this. The link to my review is here, but:

Firstly, this is a game about the very nature of stories. As your traveller explores these worlds it’s you who is giving them life. These long lost worlds are relying on your words to have their stories told, and to have their pasts reimagined. What you say, what you write, becomes the legacy that these worlds will be remembered by. It’s an interest comment on how histories are created

I like it a lot - YMMV with it depending on how into writing and re-writing you might be. But there's a LOT of talent in the user created stories, and is endlessly "replayable" if you're into that kind of thing.

I just noticed that when GAF is down, I cant access my Indie Games list for the current month.

Need to save that locally.

What/how much did they add?

Well, if you remember, I checked on the game in November or so, only to find out that zero updates had occurred since May.

They posted this in November so at least they signaled that the game was still alive (I had missed this up until now, though). Then back to radio silence until today, when that screenshot popped up out of nowhere while GAF was down (without any real explanation).

Seems like the screen is showing off contract work you can do with painters from your guild. I'm happy the project is alive and.. well, apparently.

Tales of Maj'Eyal is coming to Android

Oh god. Oh god. Oh god.
...

Ah, gotcha. So another 6 months until the next news.

As promised, brief thoughts on Drift Stage (+ video):

It's got some definitely potential. As I mentioned in my video, the game definitely has the style of a 1980s arcade racer with the controls of something a little more modern. The drifting is a bit simple -- you tap brake and then the accelerator to drift, and simply steer to determine how wide or tight you move through the curve -- but feels natural enough that anyone can pick up how to do it pretty quickly. The music is incredible; Myrone has really knocked it out of the park so far with creating music that fits the game's aesthetic (or songs he's already made happen to fit the aesthetic really well). The novice and intermediate ghosts were pretty easy to beat but the expert ghost has been pushing me pretty hard so far.

The game certainly has potential to be a solid title, and I found myself spending a lot of time just wanting to run one more lap to see if I could beat my time. Drift Stage requires skill to be good, but it's not an overburdening requirement that will turn away all but the most hardcore of racing fans.

I made a video of Earthtongue, it's a mushroom/bug growing vivarium sort of thing. Best played in a side window and looked at/interacted with sparingly like an ant farm. Really relaxing, interesting and kind fun. Only $4 too, released today.

You can hear my more extended thoughts in the video. Balance isn't perfect but it's a pretty neat little thing to watch grow and affect, but if you're the type to argue "that's not a game" it's probably not for you.

Oh wow that looks sweet. Thanks for the headsup. Could you make another post following the format in the OP please? That way it gets automatically added to next month :)

(Ctrl-F for "Released games" in red letters)

Earthtongue - $4 (PC, Mac)

(is that right?)

Perfect, thanks :) I wrote a program that picks up posts in this format, so they get automatically added to next month. Saves me a ton of time.

Alright--should I include that "pay by art" bit in price or description or...? First I've seen a dev do something like that, cool idea though. Wonder how many will bite. Decent fan art + social media + a link probably helps more than the $4 would, sorta like giving youtubers free copies (how I obtained the game).

Ok so be honest:

Who recommended Lovely Planet last year only to be ignored (by me)?

I picked it up as part of that Humble Eye Candy Bundle - and it's fantastic!!

Yep, cool idea. Its fine how it is.

I'm LTTP with these but:

My Let's Play of Chester United:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1EzzUdorOzs

You've seen the NES style boxart for Chester previously. This game just passed Steam Greenlight and is shaping up to be a pretty decent platformer. Seems that there are 8+ different Chesters to cycle through at will and you also have a world-bending power that transforms the world into different styles. Pretty neato.

My Let's Play of Driftstage:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vo5szfFKeJI

Even though it's an early alpha, the game is already pretty dope. Drifting felt effortless after 30 seconds, the only part I could comment on is getting "out" of a drift didn't feel like anything really. This is V0.01 though so, no real reason to comment on mechanics just yet. What is there does work splendidly though. There is also a Picture Mode where you can drop the HUD and take the camera wherever you want. I like it.

Thoughts on Lisa

A weird game, like Earthbound in Fist of the North Star. Only sunk a few hours into it, but it's compelling in its own way as you try to find your daughter, who has been kidnapped, and is the last woman on Earth. Lots of black comedy here. The fights are tough, especially since you don't get your health or mana restored like in most turn-based RPG fights. Also resting will cause you to lose party members, get poisoned, be sneak attacked, or otherwise like 50% of the time so it's a big gamble. But like in a Dark Souls game if you think there's no way to win a fight you're probably in the wrong area and should backtrack and take a different route.

Overall, pretty fun. Definitely unique.

Just checked out Law Breaker, it was a sweet little experience. I had a GTA 1/2 crave going on, not sure this really fixed that.

The controls aren't your standard GTA 1/2 controls. The arrow key you press corresponds to which direction on the screen you go, so "up" arrow just moves you toward to the top of the screen. The controls never really clicked with me, but the game is fairly forgiving. Cops seemed to be pretty aggressive, and I wasn't a fan of how their projectiles could clip right through buildings.

Theres only about 3 levels, and in the last level you get a tank, which basically made me invinsible, and was a lot of fun. Also theres helicoptors,...and you can steal and drive them. Oh I guess I didnt mention you can steal any car at any time. There are sports cars which are faster.

Was a fun little experience, though hardly a complete game.

I keep getting Eitr, Titan Souls, Below and Hyper Light Drifter mixed up...

But I need all four of them. I need them now!

I'm not sure if this belongs in here or one of the iOS/Android threads, but since it's PC also, I'll leave it here. Mos Speedrun is getting a sequel:

http://youtu.be/CMPJVcM-XXQ

I really liked the first one and especially the implementation of the virtual pad, even if that kind of game always plays better with a controller.

Hearing some very enthusiastic stuff about The Talos Principle. Pretty big for a game about shooting lasers around.

I was praising it, as like everyone here. :P

All of us praised it :p

Ok ok! You guys were right I was wrong - I haven't checked out every game from that bundle yet. Just Lovely Planet (which is ace) and The Blue Flamingo which is... well it's ok, but I'm not sure it's for me. Looks fantastic though!

Off topic - I ran into my old dance partner today - amazing the bond you have with people you haven't seen for years. I feel happy now!

So what's everyone playing today - I can't be the only one with a day off.

For anyone relatively new to this thread series:
If you look forward to a game, or like a game that has already been released, feel free to make sure its included in next months thread! Only thing you need to do is making formatted posts (see OP or below) to make sure your posts are picked up by Toma-Bot :)

Been meaning to post this the last few months, but I keep forgetting. My roommates put out this platformer/point n click adventure hybrid game called Petrichor that's getting some buzz around the net. It's meant to be played with headphones in a darkened room.

http://sundaemonth.itch.io/petrichor

That looks pretty sweet. Feel free to make a Formatted post for a released game like this:

I have to go to work soon, but I just finished Tiny Bang Story. It was short and besides not scaling on a full screen and some bugs it was a good game with a lovely style and good music. The game is part a hidden object and part a puzzle game, oddly I was able to finish the two last levels without collecting all puzzle pieces.

Hearing some very enthusiastic stuff about The Talos Principle. Pretty big for a game about shooting lasers around.

Its a very intelligently designed game and I like the story elements as well, buuuuut I still think its a little overpriced for what it offers. Its a long game, but it also reuses too many ideas too often and it feels like its stretching itself a bit too much. I am also not the biggest fan of the overall art design, which feels very bland and uninspired.

Nonetheless, its still probably one of the best Indies of 2014, so definitely worth a look.

I need to get to Lisa. I was planning a video but it's a very slow and holistic thing so it's hard to pick just one part to show.

Subnautica's alpha just started recently, been meaning to get into that too. Also need to check out Lovely Planet since it was in the humble bumble, was already looking at that one.

Lovely Planet is really good, but I am kinda surprised not more people talk about Eidolon. At least in this thread, Eidolon resonated very strongly with most people who played it, but ... nobody mentions it anywhere. Really weird.

I did try to play it last night, but sadly the game doesn't run well on my machine and it forced to me turn down all the settings to get an okay framerate and the lack of draw distance and fine details didn't really help the majesty of the views you come across in that game. I did sorta enjoy it though and I'm not usually one for the more slower paced exploring simulator type of game.
