Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

Is anyone encountering the bug where if you hit X when looking at the stats ingame, it changes to ingame chat, and if you try to change back to party chat, your mic just goes dead?

This has happened three times now.

On a sidenote - the Xbox One is abysmal compared to the 360. I had to fully unplug my console because it stopped recognizing my microphone randomly (this has happened outside of H5). My friend had to do the same thing.

I used to get that all the bloody time on the 360, definitely not limited to the X1. also you don't need to unplug it, if you hold the power button for 6-7 seconds it does a hard reset.

When are we getting different maps in the beta?

Friday?

I had to do that on my 360. If my headset connector came out of the controller at all, it would never successfully work until I rebooted. Such a pain in the ass, so I feel ya.

Weird. Had zero mic problems with the 360 over 7 years of regularly playing on it. Only time was when I discovered my original headset that came with it finally died.

Next time, I'll try just holding the power button.

So has anyone encountered that bug with the beta like I have? Literally, 3 times. I've only had like...8 or 9 sessions with the beta.

I find it easier if you quit out at intermission. Game has issues finding another match if I stay

Yep, our party last night had much better results when doing that. Pretty much instant when we started a whole new search. This needs to be resolved in final game.

Why are there no covenant weapons anywhere? Have they said if they'll be in the beta?

I have to chime in about the ass slapping dude bro stuff, too. The GF walked in at the end of a game, saw that, thought it was the dumbest thing she'd ever seen. I had no defense really.

Also, blues have an advantage on night maps especially Eden.

I've also had problems having sprint toggle on when I'm in a pinch. Not sure why?

You have to wonder how that bro stuff even makes it past a white board to being completely integrated into the game. There is either nobody there who speaks up or they are all in agreement which is frightening but explains a lot or there is one person who ignores all negativity and ploughs ahead regardless.

Does anyone think 343 are going to change anything major or just tweak a few things here and there ?

On twitter they said the carbine will be in the final game but not beta. Not sure about the rest.

US Only? US Only.

So I have noticed that my friend's Xbox One is loading Halo 5 (and other things probably) much quicker than my Xbox One. I know this because we'll be on chat and we'll both launch Halo 5 simultaneously and he will be at the menu probably 15-20 seconds before I am there (while I'm sitting at dots or black screen).

Anyone have any ideas what could be going on with this? My hard drive is 83% full if that makes a difference.

Also now that I'm thinking about it, my buddy could also launch up MCC quicker than me too. If I quit MCC and want to relaunch it, I have to wait about 5 seconds for it to open up again. Meaning that if I quit it and try and launch it right away, it just won't respond at all unless I wait and then try.

So yeah... any thoughts?

Same here. I think it's normal. I assumed it takes a bit to actually close down the app and it's just hiding it.

He using an external drive? Some external drives will load games faster than the internal.

In an effort to rank out of silver playing solo, I have been finding the worst player on my team and just baby sitting them. I follow them everywhere :).

Results have been about 7 straight wins so far.

343 art team fucked up on the new covenant aesthetic imo. Not only does it look WAY too organic... but its fucking up grenade throwing.

Let’s talk about the Halo 5 Ranking system. I have put about eight (8) hours of gameplay time into the beta since I initially was able to join as a preview member. The system, once I was ranked reminded me of a clone of the Starcraft system. And since finding out that Joshua Menke was a developer behind this CSR system, which makes perfect sense. You start with the 10 game placement matches which allow the user to be properly placed with other like skilled players. The system ultimately is based on winning and also who/what rank you are winning against. But does the system really work properly?

The system, understandably so, is team based, so the old school factor seems to be gone in the fact that if I dominate as a single player I still gain ground, or so it seemed. In the new CSR system it is all about wins. My firsthand experience was fine as I went in solo and came out with 7 wins and 3 loses in my placement matches. This gave me a silver III ranking. This is the ranking I have kept ever since. I mostly play solo with randoms and usually finish first or second on my team and mostly with a positive K/D. I though the system is pretty good.

That was until my coworker started playing the beta when everyone was able to access it. I am admittedly a more skilled player than him. He will be the first to admit that. I am no Halo master by any imagination. I would say I average 14 kills and 10 deaths per game. My Coworker is more of a 7 kills and 12 deaths kind of player. We played 8 of his 10 placement matches together. He went 1&1 outside of our games and finished 9&1 in the placement matches. He ended up being ranked a Gold II even though I stayed a Silver III. This is where the system feels broken. He helped win each of the games that we were in, but never dominated any of the games. I won’t go as far as say I carried the team as we had other randoms that helped push us towards the wins with good team play, but if I dominate in the game and he does not play at the same level, it feels wrong to rank him at a higher level.

It is problematic for him as well as he is now going into the game solo with a gold II rank and he is not a gold II player. He has complained to me about it because he just gets demolished in those games when he has no team communication or effort.
I believe I understand the reasoning behind his ranking though, as he was unranked when we were being match, so the system paired him against players of my skill/rank. Because we won those games against higher level players he became a higher rank. So does this mean that 3 semi pro players could carry a player to a semi pro level just by teaming with a new account and winning? Does the system really not take into account individual players results in the team game? If player A goes 20-2 and player B goes 7-18 they still win the game does player B receive the same points as player A?
How are the teams paired when multiple players on a team have multiple ranks? The rankings are Iron – Bronze – Silver- Gold – Onyx as the lay person ranks and then the top 1500 players fall into the semi pro and the top 200 being in the pro rank. Let’s just play around and say each ranking system has a number assigned to it. Iron equals 1, Bronze 2, Silver 3, Gold 4, and Onyx a 5. Semi Pro and Pro players play in the own sandbox. If we play a 4 vs 4 match do the ranking levels have to match? Example: 2 onyx, 1 gold, 1 silver one team would equal 17 points for team A So team B would also have to equal 17 point in some combination? 3 onyx and 1 bronze would equal 17. This is a simple look at the matchmaking, but it makes me wonder if this is a similar, although simplistic algorithm that they might be using. If that is the case how does this benefit the one user that would be paired with team B that is a lower rank? This is all speculation on my part so I might be completely off base here, but it brings potential concerns. Is the ranking system destroying solo play by focusing on team rankings and not solo performance?

So for the wall of text, I just had a great conversation with my coworkers about the ranking system today and I wanted to share it with everyone. Thoughts?

BR starts:

BR starts is just better. People complaining about getting shot off spawn...I'd rather get shot with a BR in my hands then an AR.

Breakout:

- Fun in spurts. Any more than 2-3 games and it gets repetitive.
- Lack of difference in maps. This is adding to the repetitiveness. Both maps look the exact same and the geometry is just blocks. Blocks.
- Right now it looks like some of the appeal for Breakout is that whole 'quick launch into a sprint start'. But with that, it rules out using shipped maps like Truth/Empire/etc. So what does that mean, more Tron maps? This gametype needs variety or it will wear out fast.
- Grenades need to be reduced to one off spawn and that's it.
- One BR each side works well right now, it becomes more of a support weapon.
- Objective.

Maps:

Regret

- The daylight theme is a welcome change to Midship.
- Regret is fun. The extra ledges and cover to top mid make it less of a 'control pink to win' map as there is more opportunities to push out from a base without feeling the pressure from Pink tower.
- But it is still impossible to differentiate red from blue base. In Truth/Regret this wouldn't really be an issue except for the fact there is dynamic spawns. Having people either side at any time there really needs to be more visual cues. Make each base have a lift corresponding to that color. Having both bases have blue lifts and blue AND red lights is frustrating.
- In the Sprint, one of the things stated was that you were removing the roof off pink tower. Perfect, now we can tell the difference between the towers. But then you go ahead and remove the tower off Carbine too. Why not leave the roof but leave it inaccessible. Covenant maps need more visual cues when it's color palette revolves around purple and more purple.
- Hydra doesn't work on this map as it is way too easy to be knocked out of ADS, thus rendering it to a weak human version of a brute shot with little to no splash damage. If this weapon doesn't lock on to vehicles, I fear rockets will be the more preferable choice in every way.
- Applies to both maps but the Lightrifle is SO MUCH BETTER. It feels good to shoot. It's a worthy adversary to the other starting rifles now I find.

Eden

- I don't really know how to feel about this map. It's weirdly symmetric and asymmetric at the same time. And it's blue. Really blue. Inexplicably blue.
- Sniper doesn't play well only being on one side. It instantly makes the map one sided and it's the easier of the two bases to hold due to the Nest being such a good vantage point.
- I think it would just be better if the spawns return to either base. Rockets outside. Sword/Sniper inside.

Yes that bug happened to me all the damn time before I figured out why it was happening. It got so bad my team started using Skype instead of the party app which works 100x better anyways, so it all worked out.

I'm totally with you on the xbox one too. I have that microphone issue every once in a while but can usually fix it by restarting the controller. Just a lot of bizarre and obnoxious bugs in the xbone os and networking that it drives me mad. The 360 was better 10 years ago straight out of the box.

May I ask where are you from?

Australia.

It's not favorable to those who can't dominate and bring a team victory. It's too slanted on wins. I was on a team and I had a final KDR of 2.7 and the highest the rest of my team had was 0.3. I performed well despite my team but I'm still punished.

It could be a matter of the language they use at the end of the match. The language says "performance increase" or "decrease" but it's not based on individual performance even though that's what it's ranking. It's just impossible to make real progress unless you pair with a team. And maybe that's 343's hope.

I just think it's a terrible ranking system for matchmaking but it'd be fine in playlists like a tournament-style or MLG style.

Yeah Its good in theory because it promotes teamwork but I don't think it works that well.

I agree. This is an excellent system for something like a clan rank. However as an individual ranking system it completely fails. It doesn't take individual performance into account at all and as such doesn't actually represent a player's personal skill. It's pot luck whether or not you're going to rank up or down.

Rumble Pit, Social Slayer, teaming up, and not caring are all options for you if you don't like the ranked team playlist having a ranking system based on team performance.
