I almost forgot best girl Miyuki from Basquash.

Oh yay. I was going to post Ayukawa Miyuki. I didn't really much care for Basquash... but I liked her personality and she was really cute. I wish there were more characters like her in anime. A lot of characters in anime are brown... but maybe not really supposed to be black.

Ayukawa Miyuki is definitely a black character. Like she's supposed to be, what's a good way to say it, African dark skinned? While a lot of other character seem like they're supposed to be tanned or Indian or something. Which is great, I think that diversity is wonderful, and having more Indian and other brown or dark skinned characters would be great. But it would be nice to have more characters who look like they're ethnically African in some way.

And I know that um... "kinky" hair? Isn't just a black person thing. People of different races can have that kind of hair. And that many black people don't. But it's really common among many ethnically African people, and is an important part of portraying black characters. Especially since a lot of black people feel pressured to straighten their hair or shave it, or have extensions or things like that.

Ayukawa Miyuki is definitely black or brown or some good word for ethnically African looking. There aren't really any good words for "race". And she's just as cute as any white or Asian anime character. There should be more cute black girls like her.

... I just wish that they didn't make her a boobservice character. The whole anime was too sexualized and they always had her breasts bouncing all over the place. :/ And also she didn't need to have exaggerated breasts.

I also worry that they just had her as a black character in the anime because it was about basketball. Which a lot of people associate with black people since there are a lot of black athletes. I would like there to be more characters like her who aren't as sexualized or as curvy. And in anime that aren't seen as stereotypically "black".

There's no reason why they couldn't make a character like her be in an anime about something like a punk music band or something like that.

Artist is pretty blatant when he does African American type of characters if I remember correctly. Been a long ass time since I read the manga.

Since all we have to go off of is his last name would have the following 3 choices. Irish, Italian, Spanish.

Though the artist does seem to draw him with slightly more tan skin, my guess would be to differentiate him from his Japanese partner.

Looked it up and seems like the style changed as the series went on as initially they both appeared "white" and later in the series his skin tone changed to be tan. Since my copies of the manga are boxed up in storage, went and looked through the more of the series. The artist seemed to have changed Sleepy back into a light skinned character with the later chapters. When had originally read it never thought much about it, since here in Japan a lot of mangas are like that with how characters look and change as the artist improves or switches their style.

Can Killua even think at someone else than Gon?

Alluka Id say comes pretty close.

It also makes a weird asumption that black people have to be literally black to be considered black, there are god knows how many black people, including me most times(altho ive been described by a old teacher to be caramal) that would be more brown than black

I think his point is that we should'nt claim a character is black just because they have dark skin. Of course there are black people with a light shade of skin, as well as blonde black people.

Yep one person that I admire / respect Colin Luther Powell.
Personally I would have preferred him to be our first African American President over Obama, just due to the difference in actual "work experience" so to speak. Though he declined on his own and having read his biography and seeing the type of person he is am not surprised either, but highly unfortunate. Since his experience is something that the country most def needed. But thats for a whole nother conversation.

Still though, think its a bit backwards to just make the topic in such broad strokes. Since then you get all sorts of random stuff being thrown out there just because. Rather than having any sort of actual real meaning. At least thats how I see it.

I had a conversation about Yoruichi's ethnicity/race with a friend once, I was saying I thought she was mixed while he believed she was just a tanned white person (his reasoning was that she didn't have "big lips" or a "big nose"). The fact that she has an afro and some type of Diana Ross swag in one of the anime endings makes me think the author intended her to be black/mixed. I don't read Bleach though, just know who the character is.

Tosen also doesn't have big lips or a big nose. No one says he isn't black. She is literally refered to as "kuro onna" by Yami.

Not to mention the only people with purple hair in Bleach are black people.

Most people try to project (I think this is the right term?) what they want a character to be, so I guess it makes sense for black people to assume that most dark skinned characters in anime are black.
That's true but, at the same time, it can lead to faulty categorizations.

Especially if it's an anime that takes places in a feudal Japan period, I assume any dark-skinned character to be a dark-skinned Japanese person or from some Asian country that tends to have darker-skinned people (Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia etc.) than a person ethnically related to an African group.

It's a really tricky thing to pin down otherwise, though.

It also makes a weird asumption that black people have to be literally black to be considered black, there are god knows how many black people, including me most times(altho ive been described by a old teacher to be caramal) that would be more brown than black
Yep. Ah, and speaking of caramel...that reminds me of an old Mad TV skit where they tried categorizing black people by different types of coffee. Needless to say it was pretty funny but it's almost scary to think some people (of all ethnicities) feel like they have to literally do that to distinguish coff--er, black people.

I mean, literally being described by an item of drink? Imagine if that was just done in general, "Oh, he's totally mojito, it's in his eyes!"...it's just kind of silly.

Casca is the best part of the Berserk anime. Let us not speak of the movies.
Too bad she is an
annoying mute
in the manga :S. I'll probably be middle-aged by the time she
starts talking again.

I haven't seen Hunter X Hunter. Awwww, she's cute.
And she doesn't seem sexualized, like Miyuki, either.

I hope she's an important part of the anime and manga.

Haha.

She's not.

Really surprised at so many people LIKING Michiko Milardo. I mean, for real, her end game was planning on using her daughter as a bargining chip to get back with the man that may or may not have been the girl's father because the idea of being in a relationship was better than being alone, sort of.

On the other hand:

Everything about Atsuko is amazing and tragic.

Well see now the questionable thing with saying that is...what qualifies as "black"? Something that you'd consider a typical "black" feature in fact probably isn't present on a good deal of "black" people. So basically you'd be slipping into some some potentially stereotyping territory there.
lol don't try that on me, some of the characters listed are factually not black and has nothing to do with any stereotypes. Some are tanned Japanese like Aomine and
Kuzan, and others aren't even human. I made that mistake myself by listing Arshes Nei who is a dark elf. And other are ambiguous but definitely look more indian or middle eastern. I'm not a big fan of listing the ambiguous characters cus it feels disrespectful and all the ones I posted are confirmed as black except for my one error.

hair = hairstyle.

As it is the appearance of said characters hair which made you make the statement. Its pretty much the same thing, since you are making the assumption that the way someone's hair looks suddenly decides their ethnicity. Which while we do not have a specific for what the OP is saying with "Black Characters" you still are throwing said character under that classification partially based on their physical appearance. Which apparently is what folks are unhappy with at the same time too in the examples shown here and spoken of with Akira Toriyama's early character designs with people who are to be considered "black".

And pretty much why I called you out on your post in the first place as it falls into the same category of placing a character into a particular group just based off of outside appearances / preconceived ideals of what said classification of a group should look like.

More pics off the actor Kuzan was supposedly based off of.

Yup. Aokiji is also based on him, but has a lot of traditionally black features.

I know it's just manga for right now, but if the anime keeps being popular for about another 6 or so years, then we will have
enrico_pucci_49129.jpg

Enrico Pucci, one of the coolest JoJo villains ever.
But is he black though? JoJo part 7 spoiler:
since him and Weather Report have the same parents. Aren't they from South American descent?

Same with Casca from Berserk really I thought she was just Middle Eastern if anything.

Is that spelling coming from an official English version? His name is based off of Kirikou.
I don't know. I used the name that the a lot of the Soul Eater pages use... I haven't seen it in English... and in the Japanese version I didn't hear his name very often... I don't even remember if they used his name.

That's neat, though! Maybe I should call him Kirikou, instead.

I liked Atsuko better, too. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Michiko to Hatchin has a lot of nice diversity. Because I think it was supposed to be based on Brazil. I would like more anime like it. But it was hard to watch. It was so violent and depressing.

I wish something like it would exist without all the tragedy and violence.
Michiko seemed kind of selfish... I had trouble relating to her as a main character. :<

Same with Casca from Berserk really I thought she was just Middle Eastern if anything.

While its just a name Casca is apparently a Portuguese word.

"Casca = bark, crust, bread crust; skin, rind, peel; shell, hull, husk"

Which makes sense for the character even more now considering her current mental state.

Ah shit everyone I didn't mean to contribute to creating the thread tangent. I know all sides of the discussion have good points.

I used to be heavy into older anime and it was kind of uncommon to find characters that were black or African that did not have some painful characterizations. I remember watching characters like Ahem from Jungle De Ikou or Tanya from Battle Athletes.

I probably should have been more judicious with the pics. I hope at least someone saw something that interests them and ends up watching some anime they enjoy.

Positive-themed threads on GAF are always cool. Peace and love.

He's black/mixed, it's even a plot point.
Weather Report gets beaten up because his father is African American and the guys Pucci hired were actually KKK members.

No, he's black i.e of African ethnic make-up. In the manga
some racists attack WE because they find out he's black despite having white skin.

This is my first time hearing
he and Pucci are related, tho.
Or it could be my memory's fuzzy on that particular part; it's been a LONG time since I read JJBA.

It was late reveal. Might be better to spoiler tag that?
Just did. But now you've gotta edit your post ;)

Michiko is, legit, a horrible person.
