Windows 10: The Next Chapter - Media Briefing Details (Phil Spencer speaking)

Im hoping for a lot more than the xbox windows app screens that leaked a few weeks back, that seemed like just smartglass on the PC.

Id lose my mind if i can stream my PC games to xbox one though.

That seems like a backwards thing to do. It would be much better if you could stream PC games to your XBO. But since the majority of PC games are on Steam, I doubt MS would do this.
I would love to have tv ability to stream to my PC. Being able to play X1 games on my laptop would be amazing.

It'd be like having a portable X1, my family could watch TV whilst I play on the Xbox.

Predictions:

  • AppStore advertising (best place for developers, bla bla bla, the usual stuff)
  • Focus on a bigger separation between PCs (keyboard+mouse) and console/tablet/phone. (I assume that they have learned from their mistake with Windows 8 by now.)
  • Stream/Cloud functionality overview (streaming between devices.)
  • Windows Phone 10 announcement or sneak-peek.

I think the only extra revenue beyond games they could get out of PC gamers is the option to rent Azure dedicated servers, community content like Valve is doing, Streaming service. The sub to play multiplayer is a non starter.

They will definitely show Continuum off.

What is rumored launch date for Win10 btw?

Fall. Consumer preview for Win10 on PC and WP is rumored to release on the 21st.

This is where the announce the KI and SO ports, right?

What if they're not ports, but universal apps? One exectuable for two platforms? What if the only way to get the PC version was through the official MS online store?

I expect all systems to be using Windows 10 with varying UI and a single store, with the Xbox One having a curuated subset of items from that store.

I'd guess that cross purchasing would be emphasised and "only possible" via their "one store". They'll probably have a gaming ui and system of friends etc baked into the OS itself functioning along side Xbox live or something.

Probably hook a bunch of xbox one games into that store and retroactively support cross purchasing for those who purchased digitally or something. Probably do the same with some of their PC games to emphasise cross platform development or maybe up coming titles using such a system

Who knows

That makes too much sense.

Let's go even further. What if DirectX 12 was not just exclusive to Win10, but could only be accessed by devs in universal apps through WinRT APIs?

This will be the start of a great process, finally no more fragmentation, Xbox, windows PC and phones united in the same OS Windows 10, looking forward to see it on my PC, Xbox One and Lumia 735. Plus the new directx 12 that should bring better optimization and results on PC games and Xbox too.
Actually it could be even a better enviroment than Apple one, we have same OS for iPhone and iPad, but Mac has its own OS, different from the mobile one, windows 10 instead should unify all the devices

I;m not expecting anything good and yet I have a feeling they will somehow manage to still dissapoint me. Propably by making few more console/mobile abominations and sticking beloved PC IP on them.

Very likely, otherwise, Valve won't bother SteamOS (multi-OS cross-buy)

I want MS to allow for localized cloud processing from your home PC to xbo. Could you imagine getting increased processing in your console game from your PC?

I am probably in a minority here but as a PC gamer I am dreading this conference. I am never going to own an Xbone and I will never own a Windows Phone. So all this talk of integrating MS's other platforms into the PC is of zero interest to me.

Now the dread part comes down to just how much they are gonna try and fuck PC gaming to fulfill their glorious integration program. It is no secret that Microsoft want you gaming on the Xbone and I just wonder how far they will go to try and cripple PC gaming even more to achieve this.

Mainly interested as to how the Xbox One's OS will change with the release of Windows 10. wonder if it's a substantial redesign that brings changes over that have been introduced in the monthly updates.

That tinfoil hat ready? Nobody is crippling PC gaming.

MS has not cirrpled PC gaming with 8 or 8.1 - they are not going to cripple it with W10.
Any examples you can think of?

Outside of DX12 there is really nothing they are going to announce which will be of interest unless it's that all Xbox exclusives will also be available on PC and then we will get the usual 3 way split of fanboys. MS's being angry and claiming it makes the Xbox a waste of money, Sony's being smug that their exclusives are no where else and PC's suddenly praising exclusives they originally said sucked.

Everything is pointing out that Win10 is actually a merge between desktop, W8 tablet mode and WP8 (instead of just W8 metro and WP8 as previously thought), so I can definitely see this (and I'm hopping for it). As long as they keep making WinRT apps more capable, that shouldn't be an issue.

I can see it happening. Typical MS strategy.

I agree.

And it's not like I give a shit about any of their exclusives, so there's no upside to it.

There's some cool stuff you all will use that'll be announced!

And look at little Ori in the marketing material - looking like a boss!

Aren't most features on Xbox One separate in apps so they can do a fairly big redesign with the OS and have the same apps as they were.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see. I'm also sort of anticipating them using an early version of the Surface Pro 4 tablet with Windows 10 on it for the briefing/demo. It's a perfect opportunity for some extra advertising.

It's likely to release near, or at the same time as Windows 10 hits PCs.

You agree that MS has been working towards crippling PC gaming?

What makes you think so? Or am I misreading what is being said?

Win10 release is a ways away though. I'd rather them show a surface and release it within a couple weeks. They are due a refresh though.

"Those who own Xbox Live GOLD will now have access to all of your digital downloads through the Xbox store on W1indxws 10!"

*looks to crowd for applause*

"The First title to become available on W1ndxws and on Xbox one will be Ori and the Blind Forest... stay tuned for more upcoming blockbuster titles that gamers love. But wait...Here is one more game that i want to show."

*opens blazer to show RARE t-shirt*

**cut to black and play opening sequence of the next installment of Banjo*

"Make sure to see us at E3 for even more exclusives and news for Xbox One and W1NDXWS 10. Thanks"

*Drops mic and moon walks off stage*

HAHAHAHAAH what am I thinking?

Hoping there will be an announcement for games being easily playable on XB1 as long as they are made with Windows 10 in mind. Seems possible due to Microsoft's push for unity between all Windows 10 devices but I don't want to disappoint myself.

I want Cortana on my Xbox so I can use it like the Amazon Echo. Then I would love a Hue app so I can control my lights with voice only.

That's not how it works.

I imagine the point of this unified os is to make cross-platform app purchasing possible and simplify data synchronization between different devices. Of course this will come down to software developers to utilize such features.

Another cooler idea that I came up with: Win10 will turn XB1 into SteamBox equivalent - you can stream games to your living room from pc in the other room (or from your phone or other Windows device). This might just make me buy XB1 since I'm looking for home streaming solution, so getting stream receiver and XB1 as a single device would be super cool.
