All foreigners like this are disgusting #NukeAkihabara. Typical Danny Choo fan.
I find that otaku hubs like Akihabara and Nipponbashi are not fun to go to at all. There's no good food, creepy guys everywhere, maid girls trying to get you to come into their overpriced shop, and a general uncleanliness to the whole place. I'm a nerd about games, but I gotta wade through like a dozen stores of erotic doujinshi before I get to anything game related.
What kind of creeps do you usally hang arround? Dude has an ugly bonestructue, unpleasant to look at.
SHARP BONES. Come on, the dude is handsome. That's predominantly why he's getting so much attention.
I found that article incredibly difficult to parse.
Well I cut out huge swaths of it. The original article highlights more of his tweets about his trip.

She looks very pretty. Looks like this guy doesn't have a problem with women either. :P

She's a cosplay porn photoset star. Good catch.

They aren't. They are "interesting" to see but that's about it. Unless you're like this and want to just walk into any store about buy anything with an anime girl on it to look like a zany otaku.

Pretty much. I really hate that when I want to talk to 'normals' about anime/manga, I first have to spend an hour defending myself/clearing myself from being this guy in the OP. So much frustration.

This.

Don't like being grouped with people going overboard like that. I got Mangas of "non moe" stuff (Berserk ect.), and also gather art books with illustrations of select famous animation works.

But really good for that guy realizing his dream though. Also his honestly and being so open about it too. Just never could get myself to buy or want to own such stuff though, I would however be staying in any Japanese fighting arcade or any special Manga/Anime art exhibition, if those existed.

hot damn booking my flight I'll be the next sensation

I'll rep gaf good

You're more attractive than he is. The pool of girls wanting a white man to buy them expensive dinners for nothing in return will be even larger ( ≖‿≖)

I'd legit marry Dennis.
And run off with his computers/money and European citizenship

So THIS is moe! I kept seeing the word written on GAF but my "do not google" sense kept tingling. I don't get the draw of buying a ton of figures and pictures of anime babes. I avoid games that have artstyle like this since I assume that game won't be for me.

I actually like Danny Choo besides all his moe stuff. Which I guess means I like about 1% of him. At least I've found some of his Japanese studying tips useful. If I'm not mistaken he's the guy that said he got so good at reading Japanese because he got really into an idol girl and bought and read everything he could about her. I was hardcore into studying Japanese at the time but even if it would have made me into a Japanese god I couldn't cross that line.

It's more the fanbase I guess. Like the OP guy's site is just the exact same.

Overall, this guy seems to be really enjoying himself and seems to be having a good time. So I don't see the need to throw around insults at him for liking things some people don't like like moe or whatever.

Yall are silly

You tell em Cajun-Senpai! XD

Past a certain point it becomes obsession born of mental issues, not a hobby. Where do you think this guy is?

Is it any different than people obsessing over sports or certain sports athletes or what not?

How do you know this guy has mental issues?

Folks, I thought you are better than this.
I thought you can let people enjoy whatever they want, provided it does not hurt anyone.

But this thread reads like someone stepped on a beehive. And you are the angry bees. What is the matter?

This reminds me of when back in teenager years, I bought a Playboy and was hiding a calendar from my mother, and my friend asked for the calendar, and just put it on his wall (he lived with both his parents, not alone or in a dorm). I was too embarassed for it, he was not.

Happy faces inticing anger and dismissal is awkward as fuck.

And grown man's obsession with condemning nerds/otakus could be interpreted as a mental issue as well. Where is the line?

There's no "need" but people judge people so I don't think its abnormal.

I don't even hate "moe" stuff, there is just a certain group of people like this guy. melonpan, whoever else who have zero restraint or filter and just like every single object that features a 2D girl from Japan and I find all of them to be terrible.

People can let others do what they want and still judge them. No one is preventing him from doing anything.

Im not into moe myself but I feel the hostility towards this guy is kinda rude. The guy looks healthy, does hang out with people, enjoys touring around places he likes, etc. Hell, his room in that pic is pretty damn clean. While also being a big fan of moe apparently.

Don't see where this guy supposedly has "mental issues". I have a bunch of Lakers stuff with a bunch of Kobe Bryant posters and figures, etc. Do I have mental issues? 0_0

I think it just hits too close to home for some folks. i.e. "This guy is giving anime fans a bad image!"

That melonpan guy is straight up nightmare fuel, I'll never look at melon bread the same way again. He's like the Babadooks creepy otaku brother.

He seems to be enjoying his life while being pretty good looking. Enough to make most people salty.

Well I personally don't think he has mental issues. I just think he sucks~

Question: does this girl have "mental issues"?

Won't lie, would love to see what her room looks like when Persona 5 comes out lol.

I would say she has "Atlus issues". Keh-keh.

Seriously though, I felt like a manic episode coming on already from watching that picture. I would flip out if I were in that room in real life.

"How dare he like something I don't? Something must be wrong with him!"

Pretty much sums it up.

This is exactly why, everytime someone discovers i study japanese, i've got to hurry and explain i'm not this type of "fan of the culture", and still don't get to convince most interlocutors.

Is she on Atlus paycheck?

No, it's no different. Anyone that shows this level of obsession towards sports has the same issue.

That's not normal at all.

So if they live an otherwise healthy life, whatever our standards of a healthy life is, they have mental issues over simply being fans?

What I find funny though is that if you replaced that guy in his room with Chris Pratt or Matt Damon, it would be like "oh he's so cool! How adorable!" But with this guy it's like "oh look at this basement dweller spending money on anime shit". :P

I still don't think this person has mental issues, but the persona example or a sports fan example is different because those are fans of single people or franchises. This guy just buys anything 2D and from Japan.

In your example, replace Matt Damon with every single actor or actress in history with no real preference and it might be more accurate.

I don't think anyone would think this guy is "so cool" if he had posters instead, unless you also really like Matt Damon or Chris Pratt, but most people don't care about individual actors that much lol.

No I meant If Chris Pratt's room was full of moe posters and what not.

This prevalent gaijin hipster attitude is probably more annoying than these people. Just let them have their fun or ignore them if it bothers you so much. The lengths I see people go to distance themselves from 'disgusting otaku' in front of 'normal' Japanese people while having a million video game systems and anime stashed in a closet is the real strange thing.

I am letting them have their fun, I'm just judging them while they do it. Seems normal to me. Give me directions to your world utopia where no one judges the behaviors / actions / characteristics of other humans.

And I'm not distancing myself from otaku in front of "normal japanese people" unless "normal japanese people" are neogaf posters.

Oh I completely misread that, I mean maybe... but I don't think so, most people would figure it was a joke, then if it turned out it wasn't a joke it would probably wierd alot of people out.
