NY Times preview

WASHINGTON — President Obama plans to use Tuesday night’s State of the Union address to call on Congress to pivot from an era of terror, war and recession to one of expanding economic opportunity, outlining a wide-ranging agenda intended to address income inequality and help working Americans.

“Will we accept an economy where only a few of us do spectacularly well, or will we commit ourselves to an economy that generates rising incomes and chances for everyone who makes the effort?” Mr. Obama will say, according to excerpts from the speech distributed in advance.

Meeting a skeptical Congress on its own turf, Mr. Obama will press to capitalize on the economic recovery to achieve some of his long-held goals. He is expected to call on Republicans to work with him on potential areas of consensus, including a new push to approve far-reaching trade deals in Europe and Asia.

But the president will also use the annual prime-time address to sketch an activist vision for his final two years in office and to set the terms of a debate that will sharpen the distinctions between the two parties in advance of the 2016 elections.

WaPo "cheat sheet"

Spoiler alert: The White House has already unveiled a lot of the programs Obama will call for in the speech, from new taxes on the wealthiest individuals, making community college free, faster Internet service, paid sick leave, cybersecurity and more in the days and weeks before the address.

Responses?

On Monday evening, after President Barack Obama lays out his vision for the next two years, the GOP will again triple down on its opposition to Obama’s proposals, offering political consumers four speech responses in two languages and on three different media platforms to choose from. They stretch from the party’s conservative wing to its Rand Paul wing, which tends to flap on its own.

Sen. Joni Ernst, a really, really conservative freshman from Iowa, will deliver the party’s official rebuttal to the SOTU speech. Then there’s the tea party response, delivered by Rep. Curt Clawson of Florida; his state colleague, Rep. Carlos Curbelo, will deliver the GOP response in Spanish. Finally, there’s Paul: the Kentucky senator and presidential hopeful, who announced he’ll rebut Obama’s speech, again, on his YouTube channel.

Four of them. Again.

Here's the drinking game for the address itself.

God bless you, God bless pig farmers, and God bless the United States of America.

(And in case anyone's curious, the title's referencing this Wonkblog post from last Saturday.)

Senator Joni Ernst, a military veteran who served in Iraq, will evidently emphasize her military service in her response to the president’s State of the Union speech.

Officials said that Ms. Ernst would deliver her speech after the president’s address from the Senate Armed Services Committee room. Ms. Ernst was appointed to the prestigious committee earlier this year.

Go fuck yourself Senator Ernst!

Are they really going to play the terrorism card again?

Btw the Spanish response by the GOP is literally just gonna be a translation of Ernsts speech. They can't be bothered to write something original.

Wanna know what's really bad for this subject? The RNC a few days ago released their new Republican Nominee Debate guidelines for 2016. They cut out the debate that usually takes place on Univision, the channel that has something like 96 percent penetration into Spanish Households.

These people have no clue.

Nobody was willing to foot the bill for all the bronzer they'd need.

The idea of a political party making a response to a State of the Union speech constitutionally intended to be for Congress is just so ridiculous.

The president is required to inform about the "State of the Union" the opposition party offers a rebuttle. This is common in most two party systems. The offer different views on the state of the country. I dont see the ridiculousness of it.

and to think the guy can run for Governor again in Louisiana in 8 years.

It is a sad for all of us who live in this State. Our Governor is an embarrassment. No wonder we are in such dire straights down here.

Electorally they're not as important as people make them out to be (Florida and Colorado are the only place they can shift the race by themselves). But long term this is a disastrous oversight. Its really letting latinos become democrats and political identity doesn't change over lifetimes very often. Its setting themselves up for a large and growing group to never give them the time of day.

Look at how long it took the south to atop voting Democratic. That's what were looking at.

Didn't the party switch happen as soon as VRA was passed, or within one election?

at the presidential level, sure

took somewhat longer for everything under that to fully shift at the federal level

(and then state legislatures finally started flipping to the ridiculous extent we've been seeing lately within this century)

Gradual at the state level. Instant at the federal aside from favorite son's Carter and Clinton being the exceptions winning places like GA, WV, AR etc.

Yup.

I remember women down here in particular went absolutely nuts for Bill Clinton. When Louisiana went blue in 1992, I was a bit surprised. The gender gap was constantly talked about on CNN when they were doing post-election analysis.

I don't think he'd be able to get nearly as many southern states for Hillary as he did in the 1990s, but states like Virginia and North Carolina might be a good bit easier this time around with him co-campaigning with her.

I'm really hoping he takes a direct shot at McConnells suggestion that the economy improved due to the expectation of a Republican controlled Senate.

Long live our King and Savior.
pls propose legislation for 3rd "king" term

I guess I need to go ahead and watch.

I'm fascinated by politics despite the fact that it's also super depressing to me. I'm hoping I can get some good laughs (instead of flat out rage) from all the wonderful responses, but the tweets I've already seen in this thread don't make me feel very confident.

Oh well. Let's do this.

I'd vote for him again, better then any of the dem alternatives with a chance of winning (at the moment). Although, Hillary would probably have a better chance of winning then Obama running for reelection.
