Question: What consoles will EVO games be played?

MrWiz: We have not determined that at this time.

AKA "the cheques haven't cleared yet".

I'm curious as to why not? It seemed to be handled well for Capcom Cup.

I'm thinking something along the lines of just finals day. It wouldn't make sense for Day 1 or 2.

Or am I secretly being trolled with a "no more James Chen/Skisonic" nonsense? :lol

I wasn't for it at Capcom Cup either though.

I might be okay if it was set up so the players didn't overhear it though.

There will be a huge gab between current/last gen MKX versions. NRS modified UE3 a lot for the game and not everything will work smoothly with last-gen hardware. Wouldn't be surprised if some differences affected the gameplay too.

I can see MK8 and Ultra Street Fighter 4 being on PS4 if Sony offers free PS4s to run the tournament for years.

Edit: MK10, not MK8.

Gee, I wonder what platforms they're playing the smash games and KI on...

Well, KI is a given, but Melee can be run on a GC or Wii, and potentially a Wii U if current rumors(albeit unlikely) if they are to be believed.

Ultra - 360. No one's wasting time with PS4 Ultra when PS3/360 Sticks doesn't support it.
Mahvel - 360. lol Mahvel.
MKX - Hmmmm...last gen probably or X1.
Everything else? PS3 or their respective console.

Especially since Sony is putting down $500k for SFV they want to get that install base going.

Sony would be smart to get some PS4s in so USF4, MKX and GGXrd are played on PS4s.

Oh yeah Xrd is likely gonna be on PS3 too.

I don't see Wizard prioritizing moneyhats over player convenience (especially in regards to international players) in regards to console selection.

GGXrd/MKX should definitely be PS4, imo. The controller issue w/ PS4s is the issue w/ USF4- if they let PS3 sticks/controllers be used it'd be fine.

Melee and UMVC3 are the only unpatched, non-updated repeat games at EVO (out of 9 games).

Let that sink in for a bit.

LMAO @ Mike Ross's comment about Justin. "Justin had to nerf himself to make the matches a spectacle" because otherwise it would've been MVC2 era Justin rolling over everyone super free.

Does anyone want to think of what Justin would do with a ZMC team, or even Team PR Balrog? Or heaven forbid he goes full cheese and goes MorriDoomVergil? Wong Factor + XF3 Vergil? <shudder>

I was merely pointing out that this is the future of FGs in general... updates/revisions/new iterations gets your games to stay at EVO while older ones are left out in the cold.

Marvel and Melee are generally anomalies (2 out of 9 games) and even Marvel is fading naturally over time (game has put in 5 years already at EVO, that's way more than most fighting games). SF also has enough clout to stay at EVO without revisions although with the direction SFV is heading I don't believe that will happen... game will get updated until SF6 and so on.

Games like KI and Persona would not have made it to EVO if they didn't just had new updates. I don't care how much money hats they put in, it just wasn't gonna happen especially for Persona. A new update pushed it over the edge and allowed it to be played at EVO.

Probably although I think 2016 will be the last year for Marvel 3. Though if someone like Yipes wins we might be in for a 2017 EVO with Marvel.

Regardless of whether ChrisG wins or not, this probably needs to be the last Marvel EVO. I desperately want either Wong or Apologyman to win. (I imagine ChrisG will win, though.)

I would not be surprised if Disney has started a Marvel fighting game of some kind for this generation. Probably not Capcom though.

Yeah but when were those games featured on stage as main games?
New games get sloppy exhibitions by players who are totally unfamiliar with a new game all the time!

Okay, I'll stop being a jerk for a second. It's cool that they're doing this, from a fandom POV. Everyone wants to play the hot new game as soon as they can. But making it a "main Evo event" is a PR stunt for Bandai-Namco's sake; it's hard to get too excited about watching Day One play as anything other than Day One play, especially when we'll be four or five months deep in match videos from Japan and the rest of Asia.

It'd never happen, because it's far too aggressive a move, but I'd be thrilled to see a "barebones" PC or console version of T7 released within a couple months of the Arcade version. Of course, that'd cut into their arcade business in the homeland, and cut into sales of a "full-featured" console game with tons of bonus modes or whatever in mid-2016, but hey, a man can dream.

You absolutely can run SSBM on a WiiU right now -- it just takes some hacks. Literally the only hardware missing to support GC games on the WiiU are the GC contoller and memory card ports. The GC adapters solve the former issue, and the latter can easily be worked around in software (and already is). So Nintendo could roll out GC games on the WiiU with no technical issues... they would just want to do it.

Yeah, if Nintendo can put Wii games on the eShop, which they have done recently, they can easily put on GC games, including Melee.

I didn't mention it before since the steps to currently get Melee working on the Wii U involves a number of hacks/mods that Evo obviously wants to avoid.

U.S. players will be able to play Tekken 7 before EVO though. MarkMan confirmed Tekken 7 cabs will be at various different events before EVO and possibly even at some U.S. arcades?

So no it won't be a Day One experience for everyone.

It's not gonna be day one play. maybe for NA. But there will be plenty of footage from asia.

And it's a GOOD PR move/stunt. Why is this a bad thing? Are you saying it's bad" "Stunt" makes it seem that way.

Harada please make it so.

OK, for some of the players, it'll be "I played this for two days about three months ago" experience. Some players pick up & retain skills and knowledge that quickly, but I'd wager they're a relatively small group even among fighting game players.

And, I mean, it IS a stunt. It's designed to keep people excited for a game they won't be able to play on a regular basis for another year, just like the various Smash 4 demo events. Nothing wrong with that.

e: if it sounds like I'm down on the idea, understand that what I'm actually down on is the "Japanese arcades first, everyone else someday in the future" model that the genre embraces. As someone who doesn't live in Japan, nevermind metro Tokyo, it's not exactly an ideal format.

Went, looked, died at the number of "OH NOES CASUALS THAT MEANS NO MOAR ONE FRAME LINKS" posts.

Hold a button down within 5f of the end of the recovery of that normal and the ensuing normal comes out on the first frame.

Boom, you don't need to worry about tight links and you don't need to mess up your frame data.

Blazblue style. I'm fine with it

I'm more talking about the silliness of the idea that one frame links are the key difference between casual and hardcore.

Anyway. If - IF - accessibility is the big thing holding back fighting games from hitting it big again, OFLs are not the place you start, they're more of a later stage symptom. If you remove them and change nothing else, you've done nothing but make some long combos more viable for a (slightly?) larger percentage of (advanced?) players.

I no longer really believe accessibility is the problem, though, so much as the market of people interested in 1 v 1 fighting games is smaller (than other competitive online games) for other reasons.

I doubt its rollback Netcode. If anything, its something propriety that Capcom cooked up and won't reveal details about it until it's time.

The logistics and bullshit to cut through working with that many companies for one game is scary. That being said I'd pay a high price for it.

I've thought about this before, like I guess we all have, and this game would probably include these series, bare minimum:
  • Street Fighter
  • Tekken
  • King of Fighters
  • Virtua Fighter
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Dead or Alive
  • Guilty Gear
So that's 7 companies right there. And you know Microsoft would want some Killer Instinct in there too. That said... I don't necessarily think it would be impossible?

Slightly off topic but is the ASUS still the go to monitor, especially for the price or is there a new king?
Anything rated 10ms or lower here is fine.

The VH236H is pretty outdated at this point. I wouldn't bother with it unless you can get it for super cheap.

CapCup layout wasn't ideal. David and James said that they had to hold back on commentary because the players could hear them, and it showed.

And I sure as fuck don't want soundproof booths as a "solution" for that.

UNIEL on PC? :O

Yes.

I had an inkling... but nothing more.
No more having to boot up my slow ass PS3.
No more having to wait over a minute to boot up the damn game.
No more laggy menus... no more shoddy online PSN shenanigans.
Huge compatibility range for anyone's old fightstick. I have an older 360 stick lying around that I use for all my PC fighters.

Now all we have to do is see if the port is good! Though it will likely not match the fantastic netcode of Skullgirls (and likely very few future fighting games ever will) if it's great, then it's great and that's all that matters.

So basically copy/paste what DOTA 2 already has.

Including its F2P and cosmetic items only monetization model :> Though I am fine with buying the base game and/or characters (and would be more so if offline players could bring their characters with their profiles so I don't have to buy all of them).
