Fighting Games Weekly | Jan 19-25 | As Seen On WSHH

For the people whining about Tekken 7 play being poor, they did the same thing with Tekken 6 several years ago and the players simply treated it as a less serious tournament. I believe Rip won that one. Either way, it was still relatively fun to watch, as should this one be. ESPECIALLY if they put Aris on commentary, which I'm sure they will.

Haha that reset! Sanford thought he had it in the bag!

Have to say that Dieminion is not looking comfortable with Rolento. Not punishing properly but still winning!

Expose the smash haters, spooky.

Wowwwwwwwwwww lmao

I'm upset that I missed Spooky lighting up Smash detractors and what led to the reset. Both sound like they were amazing things this time around.

That walk into the distance as he left the venue caught on camera was just too fucking perfect. Damn.

I'm listening to this week's UltraChen show and I'm kind of astounded at how different the mood is for Smash Wii U and Melee, and Killer Instinct. Both really like Smash Wii U and Melee, and they like KI too, but they also bemoan the fact that KI is a XB1 exclusive and hope for a PC release thinking that 80% of the issue KI has is that its a XB1 exclusive.

At the very least I could give KI a shot if it wasn't Xbone exclusive. I don't think I'm alone on this.

EDIT: To clarify, Smash used to be a dramatically different from the rest of the FGC, so console exclusivity wasn't a problem. All the games they played were available on a GC/Wii. KI is a more traditional FG that's available to a far smaller audience(and was barebones at launch).

Even though it's not in the main Evo lineup, I feel like playing some UNIEL again.

Always loved the footsie and shield aspect of the game. Pretty honest too until you get to certain characters lol

I was actually good at the game too until I started focusing on Nanase too much...

Which is strange because logistically I'm not sure what that solves when it likely makes shit harder.

Haven't watched the latest UltraChen but I'd hope their reasoning is more than just platform wars with make up on it.

I will always love UNiEL for Yuzuriha. I can't even lie.

Maximilian participate in fighting game tournaments

good one

I went to so many tournaments, that I had to stop going to tournaments. Crazy, right?!

Oh, it was all pre-2011, so it probably doesn't count.

edit: On another note. Why it is that the current day FGC-hardcore hates those who choose not to compete? Is the one goal of FG players now to make the pot bigger? I've never been into big prize pool E-Sports. I like games more.

Going console exclusive can backfire pretty hard for series expansion if you play your cards wrong, but I don't know if that's the case for KI.

I actually played some UNIEL tonight. I like the game, but it was a reminder that I don't really like any of the characters. Nobody seems fun.

I feel like being a platform exclusive (and being the only X1 launch window exclusive that wasn't heavily problematic in one way or another) probably did the game a ton of favors, because a lot of people seem to have picked it up for that reason (before realizing they don't like fighting games and dropping it). There seems to be a large number of people willing to push the game just for the sake of console war stuff even if they aren't typically interested in the genre, sort of like Driveclub.

I think the game would've had more traction if it launched with more content instead of steadily trickling it into the game.

Hate is a strong word to use for smarmy jackasses on the internet looking for ways to occupy themselves.

To be frank, pot monsters keep games alive because we aren't E-sports. People go out to events to play the game at a more competitive(read: fun for a lot of pot monsters) environment. Competing in these events puts money in the pot, attracting even more players to the scene.

To contrast, E-sports games have their prize pool determined usually by an investment from the publisher or developer. I'm not sure why you would try to dismiss all tournament goers as people who don't like the game they play, when most people realistically don't sign up for a game expecting to make their money back. They do it for any variety of reasons like love of the game, scene, competition, etc. Nor would I dismiss people who pick their games based on the competition level or prize pool rather than any perceived merit in the game itself.

Think of it this way; tournaments to a lot of people are a way to find infinite replay value in a game they like. There isn't a "one goal" among fighting game players because it's a diverse group of attendees, but I'd say "playing the game at the event" or to put it another way "to make the pot bigger" is something most tourney goes have in mind. I don't know what nebulous group would be categorized as "FGC-hardcore," but they would probably wouldn't have a singular opinion on people on tangentially connected to the games they play or events they compete in.

Akatsuki, Seth, Hyde, and Nanase are the bomb diggity.

Well I do play Akatsuki as well (points to avatar) but I dunno. He's not even my favorite in Blitzkampf. I'd probably do a lot better with him if I jumped back into UNIEL with an intent to really dig deep and focus, but the passion for the game isn't there, and playing Akatsuki honestly just makes me wanna go play Blitzkampf

I think a lot of people just hate you in particular because they think you have some sort of undeserved success, so you're just an easy target for people trying to e-thug their way to some FGC OG cred because doing the productive hustle is somehow less respectable than earning your rent through moneymatches.

Esports is almost entirely built around being a spectator sport, and they've pretty much completely done away with open tournaments, or atleast they've stopped bothering to broadcast them. I think the FGC could go a long way towards appealing to people who aren't competitive in general, not by making the games easier but by broadening the appeal of events even for the people who play in tournaments (since half of them will play 2 matches and end up being real life stream monsters for the rest of the event). Big money prize pools need to eventually stop being a goal, though, because it's not necessarily healthy for the scene. R-sports athletes earn their living through sponsorships and salaries, not from prize pools.

I agree entirely on broadening the events.

A lot of the incentives right now do nothing for folks who aren't capable of placing top 8. What good is a pot bonus if you're a pot monster?

I've always thought a better way to incentivize people to compete is to make the pot bonus won through a lottery system, you win 1 match, you get a lottery ticket (so folks who go 2 and out don't get it- but that's only to discourage random entrants/DQs, winning 1 match at a major is something 75% of players will do)

Events help more. I kinda want majors to be more like cons. When I went to MLG- they had a line to play Kayane in SC, that went over well. I can understand why you couldn't do that at Evo for SF4- top players wouldn't want to play randoms on top of tourney matches- but you could always use Combofiend or Haunts.

Also things like developer panels would be nice as well.

Going console exclusive can backfire pretty hard for series expansion if you play your cards wrong, but I don't know if that's the case for KI.

The problem isn't so much the console exclusive, it's being on the console that isn't what the FGC wants to buy, and not being big/good enough to sway the needle.
I think KI would have done pretty well on the PS4, and would do well on PC.

There is no money in fighting games.

Demonstrably false, but keep telling yourself that. I'm sure you'll be lucky enough to stumble upon something that allows you to justifiably demonize the way people choose to live their lives, eventually.

It's like... the notion of being involved in a competitive community might not even be about money is beyond you.

Something like that would be kind of cool, but I think it'd be better to use such "tickets" for the general raffles they already do at a lot of tournaments instead of tying it to a monetary prize.

Brokentier has had similar booths set up for their team at a few tournaments I've been to.

And in any case, it's not hard to get games in with top players if you know the right events to attend: smaller regionals / mid-majors that manage to draw a lot of top talent. There won't be nearly as many people to work your way past to get to a casual station with a "name" on it. And it's usually not impossible to do so at bigger majors either, as long as they're not EVO-big.
