Indie Games 2015 [January] Now Voting - Post 305!

Lisa The Painful RPG. It came out last year, but I just played it.

Someone hold me.

Augh I keep needing to get to that. Looks great, but also long. I want to do a video but I almost never do full playthroughs and I don't know how else I could even show it off.

Thanks! Unfortunately I probably won't end up expanding it, I feel it works well as a small package but wouldn't offer much more as a full game.

When are you bundling all of your games into one package for the vita? Do this and I will pay you MEGABUCKS

Have just tried Chromyrinth after you mentioned it. It hurts my eyes so much lol.Yes, the concept is good but platforming is too painful.

I also have just played most of free games in the OP but still not impressed.

Anyway, how is 50 indies of 2014 thread going ? I can't wait to see it.
Well to be fair, a lot of the free games in the month's OP are Ludum Dare entries, so they might not have the polish or depth of, say, a student game from Digipen or some other freeware games

Not exactly a new game, but Transformice is heading to Steam on the 30th and will still be F2P ("ethical" aka cosmetic F2P). As Newgrounds was how I got into indie games, it's pretty cool for me to see some great Flash games hit Steam. Haven't played it in years but I'll check out the Steam version soon.

Very confused about what does/doesn't hit Steam lately. Transformice is huge but honestly wouldn't have expected them to hit Steam, maybe it's a new market for them. Some games I've never heard of seem to end up on Steam with insanely low SteamDB player counts (are those accurate?), other stuff seems to sit around in Greenlight for ages like Social Justice Warriors. Transformice I can understand being big enough to skip Greenlight, other stuff seems really random.

The IGF Student Showcase winners are known:
  • a-part-ment (Team a-part-ment, University of Southern California)
  • Downwell (Ojiro Fumoto - Tokyo University of the Arts)
  • Close Your (GoodbyeWorld Games - University of Southern California)
  • Even the Stars (Pol Clarissou - Supinfogame & Nicholas Gavan - University of Bialystok)
  • Gemini (Echostone Games - Tisch School of the Arts, New York University)
  • Interloper (Monogon Games - HKU Utrecht School of Art and Technology)
  • Rooftop Cop (Stephen Lawrence Clark - Tisch School of the Arts, New York University)
  • Stellar Smooch (Alec Thomson & Jenny Jiao Hsia - New York University)
Honorable mentions:
  • A Story About My Uncle (Gone North Games - Sodertorn University),
  • Ahoooj (Circus Atus - FAMU, University of West Bohemia, CVUT FEL, UMPRUM),
  • Circles (Jeroen Wimmers, University of the Arts Utrecht),
  • Drew and the Floating Labyrinth (Dust Scratch Games, University of Windsor),
  • Lisa (Rubna, Elzendaal College Boxmeer)
  • Mecha Trigger (Team Casserole, Michigan State University).

Personally, I find the two games really cool:

Close Your - not released (PC)

http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entry2015.php?id=7361

Close your is a first person tragedy that uses a webcam to make the player's blinking a primary input. Experience the perspective of someone who suffers from brain trauma struggling with memory loss and confusion in a interactive narrative about the brevity of life. Created originally as a project for USC's Experimental Game Topics class, Close Your is the first commercial ambition of a team of students passionate about creating experiences that expand the possibilities of gaming.

Drew and the Floating Labyrinth - 7 € (PC, Mac, Linux)
zKUVA7T.jpg

http://www.igf.com/php-bin/entry2015.php?id=7548

A hand-drawn 3D third-person puzzle-platformer for PC, Mac and Linux platforms. Control Drew, a lost young girl trying to find her way back home, through a series of abstract levels requiring you to use clues in the environment to find invisible paths, gaining color to her black-and-white character as you progress.

Featuring 2D traditional animation in a 3D environment, platforming gameplay requiring patience and observation, and a simple story leading to an emotional conclusion.

Damn, (Rain World) nature, you scary

That's the WIP kraken. It's a flying/climbing predator found in the upper regions of the world, uses its limbs as wings and walking appendages, and has biological thrusters to assist in take-off and landings.

Cool fact: Fumito Ueda of SoTC and Ico fame said Rain World is a project he loves personally for its tech and design.

Look too good. Such a regret that I did not back this game.

Hmm. If I preorder it now will I get the alpha ??? https://www.humblebundle.com/store/product/rainworld/Tulsdkjf23h

So I finally started playing Besiege, and what a great first impression! From the stylish menu design alone, you can see the polish that's gone into Besiege. Building vehicles is effortless and easy, although building something that's effective and doesn't splinter apart when you move and attack isn't quite so easy. The little details stand out: wood beams snap in half when broken, blood stains your blades and the ground, your structure collapses and falls apart realistically when aflame, buildings crumble under the might of your cannon fire or swinging maces. While the current challenges are not exactly that difficult to complete objective-wise, building something that can steer effectively, withstand damage, and fire cannons without breaking apart from the recoil can be tough. Experimenting with different designs and new ways to combine pieces is fun and as the GIFs in the game's thread show, the variety of builds you can create is vast.

Can't wait to see how the game grows expand, because for a 0.01 alpha, Besiege is already a polished and well-designed experience

Anyone have any first hand experience with Grav yet? Looks really cool but I'm pretty staunch in not supporting early access in principal.

My Let's Play of A.V.

An interesting variation of echolocation games. There is too much of a pause between being able to ping and fire one of your abilities, which work like Portal 2 paint abilities, for my liking. But the build I have is still super early. I think I need to wait until this gets developed a little bit more because I'm not a fan of it right now. The game bills itself as a stealth game, and while there are stealthy things that need doing, you can just barrel through some places without incident.

Now this is a great game even early on. Game is buttery smooth, looks great and is a fantastic physics puzzler. It's essentially just the meta part of Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, (i.e. The Fun Part) with simple objectives. Building is also SUPER simple, in terms of building not of making something work XD. I had a ton of fun playing and genuine laughs from seeing the random stuff happening. Forgot to mention how immensely easy it is to move around. Middle-clicking on a point of reference and having the camera pan to that area is a game-changer.

Easily Recommended

I have an LP on my channel, but the quick and dirty is this: exploration, gathering resources and building/crafting is fun, game is resource intensive, lag is prominent, you will get griefed on a public server. If you can wait, I would suggest waiting. But it does look promising.

Crazy thing is that Besiege is only at the alpha stage. V0.01! And it doesn't feel like an alpha at all. The devs have been working on it since late 2013, and it really shows.

Besiege looks hilarious but I'm really bad at those contraption making games.

My Let's Play of A.V.

A.V. looks really cool, hadn't heard of it. May have to track the devs down and ask for a review copy I've been kind of amazed how many games I've seen hit my inbox coming out with no fanfare with less than 2 weeks of warning to even press. Is it always like this?

At least here, there are no rules (at least not yet) so you don't have constraints or restrictions in what you can and can't build. Half the fun is experimenting and improving your hilarious failures. The actual building is effortless

Unfortunately, I think so. I wish I had more time to dedicate to these indie games. Many of them just fall through the cracks.

Can confirm. If you look at my video, I didn't even think I "could" make a trebuchet. I was just making elaborate brute force machines up to zone 10.

On the Steam discussions, I had suggested a ballista for a potential weapon. Turns out someone already built one.

The voting came to an end and now we need the texts/blurbs for each game for the result thread. This took us a while last year and ANY help would be greatly appreciated. If you only loved and played 1-2 games on that list, fine, it would still be a great help if you could take care of the corresponding texts :)

http://www.l45ltd.co.uk

Operation Covert is a retro themed stealth game with a completely interactive environment.
You can go through furniture and drawers for items, hide inside a cupboard or behind a gas tank, hold up guards to make them open doors or safes, hack computers and take over the security, and infinitely more... The choice is yours!

An Untitled Story - Free (PC)

http://www.mattmakesgames.com/

An Untitled Story is a unique metroidvania style game created by the person behind Towerfall. It has pre-drawn backgrounds and all of it's art is done in an MS Paint style. You begin as an egg in your nest, and the rest is up to you to figure out. Fight 18 unique bosses, traverse a huge game world, and unravel a mysterious storyline. There are 5 different difficulty options for players of varying skill levels.

An Untitled Story - Free (PC)

I feel like I could confidently put this game at rank #1 for any month in which it appeared. Or any month in which it didn't appear. Or on my list of favourite languages or cereal brands. It would pretty much come #1 on any list I can think of.

(I really like this game)

((like, a lot))

I mean, it's a very well known indie classic. Up to Toma what he wants to include, I guess.

Going to decide that next month. If we have enough space, why not (even though we usually do "Indies we found that people missed", instead of "classics")

Anyway: I started repurposing some of Baddys posts for the voting thread, since we need to start working on that list. Would be great if a few could write 5 or so posts today so we make some progress there. Instructions and list here:

Really want to help but my English/narrative skill is terrible :/

I am correcting/shortening some texts anyway, so if its not complete nonsense, its still helping :) I mean trying doesnt hurt, I can let you know how well you did with your first try.

Freaking Meatbags is leaving Early Access on Febuary 4th
http://vimeo.com/115111827

Sweet, possibly a contender for 2015 voting with the full content :)

Would love to dive back in again.

Also: 6/50 games done for the voting thread. Make sure to check which games already have been done to not post anything twice.

Finally got around to playing Lost Constellation (the Night in the Woods supplemental). Loved it, even more than the first one (Longest Night). This one features player movement and object interaction so it's closer to the full product but, like Longest Night, it's not a demo or anything so everyone should play it to get the full experience.

I pretty much called it when the KS was announced but I'm confident NITW will be one of the seminal titles of 2015, comparable to KRZ (which, to be fair, will be one of the best games for the third year in a row, make no mistake about that).

I will try my best with Banner Saga. Should be done in 24 hours. (2 am here already)

POP: Methodology Experiment One - I can't describe how much I enjoyed this game, it's highly experimental and the presentation is amazing, Rob Lach took segments of various videos to make the introduction to the game. You're throw in a mini-games without any explanation how they works, the only thing you generally know is you can use the arrows and z x keys on keyboard. Not a game for a everyone, recommended only if you're into these kind of games.
