Anita Sarkeesian shows what one week of harassment directed at her looks like

Wasnt it proven in the past that Anita created dummy accounts and harassed herself? Not saying all these are fake accounts, but given the record that her boyfriend is a con artist, and she faked tweets, she isn't exactly a knight in shining armor either.

Again, the tweets that are in fact real piss me off....

Mind sourcing that allegation?

Nah, thats spoiler at the end doesnt make your post any less shitty.

All over some feminist criticisms. Some people need to get some perspective. Or go back to school or something.

It makes me wonder how some of these people would go in a university (or even just high school) level English or Literature class. Anita's videos are generally pretty good, but they're not even close to some of the more hard-hitting feminist critiques I read while studying.

Oh geeze.
I didn't 'get it when this began, and I still don't get it now.
Why are people so stupid.

C'mon man...

Wonder what jack thompson twitter account would have look like back in the day. Bet a lot like this....

Twitter just a terrible place.

I don't think I'd keep my twitter after 2 months of this let alone 2 years.

Ya for sure, I would just keep a blog with no comments, youtube vids with no comments, twitch with subscriber chat only, and post and discuss on a forum like this one that is strictly moderated.

All that harassment, forever, is just brutal and annoying, I wouldn't be able to hang.

This is beyond sad. I may not really agree with a lot of her views but stuff like this does make me see her in a different light. She's pushing on regardless of the giant list of Twitch chat rejects flooding her twitter page, and she's gained my respect for that.

I can afford a small donation or two.

Females and minorties deal with this kind of harassment all the time. Not to this amount. But they deal with this their entire life when participating in hobbies that have sexist environments. People really need to be empathetic and realize that their fellow people in this industry that just want to enjoy this as much as you -- can't. And that is not acceptable.

As someone that identifies as a feminist myself, I just wish those trying to educate people on these issues approached this differently (gaming media, activists etc.) I'm not a fan of the no room for debate approach. The end goal here is to bring over all the people in this industry that aren't educated or aware of these issues. Or those that have not yet come around to it and don't see an issue. And I don't think the approach of -- this is 100% sexist with no room for debate, is the solution.

That said, how are you even supposed to try to have even a basic discussion when you can't even speak your mind on an issue without being attacked and threatened to these levels? That even just being female alone, makes you a target. God forbid you discuss issues that matter to a lot of people.

I have no idea what the solution is for these psychos.

Doesn't it take months to get an account approved here?

edit: Aaaand he's gone.

One is a directed threat at someone who did nothing to deserve it.

The other is a general, if vulgar sentiment at people who issue threats and nonstop abuse online.

They aren't at all similar. Trying to tie them together as equivalent exposes a profound misunderstanding of what's going on.

I could paraphrase some of the comments from earlier on in the thread and have them blend in perfectly fine with the tweets from the blog. Pointing out the differences in targeted vs. broad abuse is academic at best.

I'm not sure I'm in the position to determine who is and who isn't a valid target for abuse. Perhaps you are.

My point is getting muddied, I'll read any responses, but this will likely be my last comment on this.

Salient point! But that means...t-that means anyone could be her! This whole thread could just be Anita, conversing with herself! Even YOU could be her!

HOW MANY OF YOU ARE SARKEESIANS

I'M ON TO YOU, GAF

If we're going to critique the tweets there are a few that stand out.

Who is the CoD community lawyer and why is he so mad and bringing up being a lawyer?
"we are the games", I don't follow what this is supposed to mean.
One guy mentions a prior account being suspended and how he easily made a new one. This is noteworthy as with accounts being so easily+quickly made, heavy handed moderation won't have an impact. So these people are banned but it isn't a sufficient/effective deterrent.

Seriously, why are people so pissed off? All she does is express her opinion. She's not calling for the extermination of gaming. She's just highlighting things that stand out to her and what her interpretations are.

I'd imagine the average age of the people sending those tweets is roughly 11 - 17.

Honestly, in some ways this is worse. I feel like the main difference between what they're like now and what those people will be like as adults is just that they haven't learned to not share everything on their mind in public openly like that. The views will probably not change for most of them, all that would change is their situational ability to judge when sharing it will help their case

You realize a few of those tweets are from women too right? Sucks to be her but I'm not funding her "salaries".

So what? That's not the point. It's about her voicing an opinion on how games could be better and she receive this vocal abuse everyday. Her" salaries" is so she can make an actual difference. I don't think she's begging for the donations.

Such is twitter.

Is there a way that these twitter accounts (via common email addresses or something) can be checked against GAF users to have them removed from GAF?

These people don't deserve the internet.

It really shows how dire everything is that many can't even seem to understand the basics and forcefully reject them in this manner.

I like how calling people out for doing bad things is abuse. Context is super important in these situations, and even still at worst the posts here still fall short of even the mildest posts on that list

I can only guess that their world view and personal values are so narrow that they feel threatened by her opinions. Absurd, I know.

"Dicking" always reminds me of Dr. Tran.

THAT's what I was thinking of! Thank you, I just couldn't grasp it :D

On topic, these messages are insane and it would be amazing if there would be a possibility to message all those guys' parents :/

I suppose one could paraphrase anything to make it fit a contrived narrative.

If your broader point is 'people here are potty-mouthed just like the mean Twitter people ¯\_(ツ)_/¯' then I guess I can't really argue. I do see a large intersection of the use of the words 'fuck,' 'fucking,' 'shit,' and 'garbage,' but that is not an interesting or useful observation. Nor is it a meaningful data point because the audience and delivery of the messages diverges wildly and you can't just ignore it.

Well said.

It's just disgusting. So many people are able to enjoy their favorite hobby without being harassed or threatened on a daily basis. So they don't have a proper concept of this. They don't actually understand how bad it is. But just because it doesn't happen to you, doesn't mean it's not happening. It doesn't mean its not a problem.

You should feel uncomfortable knowing you can enjoy your hobby while at the same time millions of people can not. That is seriously insane. And just having an ounce of empathy, you should be able to feel sick and terrible that this is happening.

The solution is continuing to discuss these issues. It's getting more minorities into positions in the industry. It's educating people that work in the industry and gamers thsmelves -- so that we can progress and change over time. I just don't know what the solution is for the psychos that are doing all the harassment and threats. Lecturing them does no good. And just like the crazy MRA groups they will always have enough of them to keep enabling.

Besides locking down the Internet and having the gov control everything and directly go after people making threats or harassment. I don't fuckin know. These people exist outside the games industry as well.

Aside from being irrelevant, given the organized nature of the campaigns against her, I would really not be suprised at all if they encouraged people to pretend to be female to make their claims seem more "legitimate"

Because they perceive her criticism of their hobby as a personal attack. Which I've always found rather ironic considering their widespread "Harden up, it's just words they can't hurt you" sentiment.

As sad as all this is, it isn't uncommon, especially for popular game oriented youtubers to receive myriad of hate messages across the board every single day. Boogie also posted some videos not long ago with examples of the depravity of the internet. I don't see any way you can reduce the hate unless you make commenting private or disable it completely, but if you give the trolls the spotlight or show the word that it's effecting you personally then I am afraid it's probably only going to get worse.

Or more directly, super interesting as the majority of these people are the same ones who bicker about the worth of the metacritic system and why x-site is better for reviews and coverage than y-site.

It's skub v anti-skub taken to an alarmingly depraved level.

So why is she on Twitter if she gets so much hate? Sounds like she wants to make some cash with this.

Because she has the right to use the service without being harassed. Duh.

I suppose if someone is getting a lot of prank calls, they should just toss their phone out the window?

Ok so then I'm going to have to assume what the tweeter was trying to say is that he is a black man who like to be the catcher in homosexual intercourse regularly. Kind of a weird thing to say in that situation, but hey, I don't judge
There's very heavy use of the N-word and FA-word within GamerGate. Can't say I understand it other than a boilerplate psychological generalization about being able to say whatever you want anonymously while on the internet. So, "for lulz".
You realize a few of those tweets are from women too right? Sucks to be her but I'm not funding her "salaries".
I don't suppose you'd care to explain how this matters? And on the later, uh, no one is asking you to fund her, so I'm not sure why you're taking it so personally.
So why is she on Twitter if she gets so much hate? Sounds like she wants to make some cash with this.
There's much to be said for 'not letting the bullies win'. They'd dance on that digital corpse until the end of time. She knows this, unfortunately. Also, I'd edit that later unless you're here attempting to get banned.

So why is she on Twitter if she gets so much hate?

Because she has every right to be. Because it's a valuable tool that many businesses use. She shouldn't be forced to not be on there because other psychos are gunning for her. If you try to apply physical logic of: she gets a ton of harassment, so stop going to the place she gets harassment. It basically means she has to limit her freedoms because other people.

How is that acceptable?

So why is she on Twitter if she gets so much hate?
The entire point is that these people are trying to sever her lines of communication with her audience. Leaving Twitter is what they want, and even then some have shown willingness to follow her off it.

Wow, but at the same time, I'm not surprised about the sexist, myopic and degrading comments. As the saying goes, with every critic's views, you get a mountain of replies, good and bad, so she should know how much impact her views are generating online and offline. I'm glad she's determined not to be silenced. Reminds me of one of those "moments in Canadian history" short videos about the first female doctor to practice medicine in the early 1900's and how all her male peers, including her teacher told her to go to the kitchen where a woman belongs.

I'm aware. My joke was honestly about twisting those words into something that, while it really shouldn't be offensive to a sensible person, would make the person posting it upset

What the fuck. Is this still the GamerGate stuff? Feel terrible for her, I wouldn't be able to handle all that.

I've watched one of the videos Sarkeesian put out. I can't even begin to fathom getting that mad at what she's talking about. Even if you disagree. I mean to take time out of your day to just shit on someone like that is gross.

Ignorance at it's best. They're arguing and insulting her because they want to be the voice of gamers, but in reality, they're ruining our image as a community.

"Bart, what other paradoxes affect our lives?"
"Well you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't."

We really can't ignore these things though or it just continues to grow. Even if discussing these problems help to reduce it even the tiniest bit, that's good.

I get that, being a minority I mean. I know what blind hate is and how sad and pathetic it can be.

Many of these Twitter posts just seem like children trying to be "edgy", not knowing the damage 250 letters or less can do. Like one of these posters claimed that she's not being abused and that she should calm down, then straight up proceeded to call her a bitch. I actually slightly chuckled at that one.

Most of them will grow out of this phase, and the rest will probably never get far in life.

while these comments are terrible and Anita nor anyone deserves them, I don't understand the point in pointing the spotlight at them except to laugh at their persistence. it's just giving them what they want.
