Anita Sarkeesian shows what one week of harassment directed at her looks like

I never said Anita did. What I said was it she seemed a bit harsh. Then again, perhaps that is what we need and Nintendo probably needs to understand that their "folksy values" come off a bit offensive in this day and age. If you say the themes are unfavorable, does that mean we can't have "damsels" anymore? Must everyone be a hyper-competent badass? Conversely we need more male "damsels" to make it equal

No and no, she's just saying that is a trope that comes from a place where women were just there to be helpless and captured and then rescued, by the man

We can still have that, and enjoy games that use that trope, she's saying we have to be aware that it is a trope, and that the implication (women are just damsels to save) is false, and women have a lot more to offer than just that

It sounds obvious and petty, but its the millions of things like that which reenforce a view of something whether that be a race, a religion, or a gender, all she is asking is that we be aware of these things, and maybe consider them when designing the things that we love

I think you're overestimating how much effort or emotion is involved in tweeting an insult.

I understand that it is, very easy to simply tweet an insult, that is why I was saying I can't believe they can get away with saying these things. I mean if these people knew there was a risk of being caught when tweeting I bet they wouldn't find it that easy to send a death threat.

Fucking hell, I just can't comprehend how this can cause such incredibly vile reactions in people. Utterly repugnant behavior, and I can't imagine how awful it must be to be bombarded with this shit day in, day out.

How many of those tweets came from someone over the age of 11? I ask because most of those insults are so immature they would have to come from a kid.

I hear a lot of similar shit on my YouTube channels but it's nowhere near this kind of volume. I can relate with her in the sense that you are making something that you hope somebody likes and takes something positive away from, yet you receive comments like this.

But then you remember that most of these comments appear to be written by morons and 12 year olds. It's disheartening, but at least it helps you let the hate bounce off.

I understand. I suppose it's more to do with the acceptance of the trope without realizing the problems.

She is extreme? Anita is basically making tvtropes.org- the videoseries. In which world is that extreme? Ever actually watched the videos?

It blows my mind that people can think Anita's incredibly mild observations are an extremist attack on the hobby. Seriously.

Honestly, I can't believe people even care this much about her to be this petty.

I'd forgotten about her months ago.

Seriously, if you don't care what she has to say, ignore it and just play videogames or something, jeez.

Ever watched a Thunderf00t video? Or a Adam Baldwin video? Or read a Breitbart article? You would be surprised.

Is it wrong that I was crying tears of laughter as I read through that?

I mean, its horrible stuff but 95% of it was basically just shit idiots say to people on the internet all the time that had literally zero substance or point. Its obviously on a much grander scale seeing as she is in the spotlight though.

I'm willing to bet that the majority of people making those posts actually have no trouble showing respect to women in their families, circle of friends or workplace. But give someone a keyboard and people turn into satans cousin when they're ready.

There's chauvinism, then there's stupid people on the internet. I believe this is the latter, with a bit of the former mixed in.

Poor Anita, she must be crying all the time because of all of them threats!

It's kind of interesting to see when you know exactly whose name is going to be grayed out next.

Good thing these threads come out often. It helps weed out the trolls every time it happens and get this out of this community. I hate trolls

It's never-ending though XD Where do they come from? It's as if the moment someone gets banned, the next person takes action.

Yeah it's really sad that some people take their time off to be a complete Wanker to someone they don't know. At least she is trying to present a good point about sexist tropes in videogames. I've know some people get equal shit for completely mundane things.

Adam Baldwin is from Firefly right? I keep seeing him involved - what does he have to do with this or gaming in general?

Yes.
Internet Aristocrat created a video, based on allegations against the indie developer Zoe Quinn by her ex-boyfriend, which claimed she slept with journalists to get favourable reviews, with a Kotaku journalist in particular. Said journalist never reviewed her game. But Adam Bladwin retweeting that video with the Gamergate hashtag hit a sweet spot amongst some. Self proclaimed Gamergaters then attacked the indie developer and proceeded to attack other women, among them Sarkeesian.

I wouldn't say she is extreme, just one sided .

How about reasoning? Otherwise you look onesided.

I actually don't feel bad because these are just laughably stupid to me. I can see where people would take offense to these though.

Good on you for seeing how people would take a bit offense on this, geez those gamers and their funny lil jokes, like that “I have at my disposal a semi-automatic rifle, multiple pistols, and a collection of pipe bombs. This will be the deadliest school shooting in American history and I’m giving you a chance to stop it." REMEMBER THAT ONE? Ayyy lmao

What exactly is the other side? everything is fine as it is?

I can see why she doesn't address that in her videos

I think the other side is maybe showing examples where women in videogames/characterisation is done well? I agree that she doesnt present a balanced viewpoint - but i guess that's not the point. the point is to get her message out and affect change.

This is eye opening..

Don't always agree with Sarkeesians methods, but it's good that someone is doing what she is doing and NOBODY deserves this much shit from random scumbags on the internet for doing it.

All that harassment is disgusting and no one should have to put up with it. Twitter needs to sort itself out big time to deal with people that do this crap. I do wonder if her harassment is more or less then any one else in the public eye?(not that it really matters) If you look at any celebs or well known persons time line it is full of stuff like this. Twitter doesn't seem to give a shit, it seriously needs to up it's game as it is the main place abuse like this is happening.

Information spreads so poorly and out-of-order on the Internet that we can have a thread about this in five years and people will still be saying "isn't she known for faking harassment???". That's terrible.

There is a video coming with positive examples, she has presented positive ones in the past, but the reason the series is getting made is because there are not many positive examples in the first place.

Money solves a lot of problems, yes. Having none causes problems.

i dont think she is overly rich at all...i dont think shes poor either but i doubt she is rolling in it right now.

regardless..that's a hell of a lot of hate messaging for a 1 week period. While i think some people have some legitimate concerns with her videos/messaging - no one deserves that kind of shit in their lives.

Does he have anything to do with gaming though? Jayne was a great character in that show....i guess it doesnt translate well to real life.

No, he doesn't have anything to do with gaming, but he's more than happy to increase his followers by appealing to their shitty natures. He was already a right wing crackpot before all this so it wasn't much of a stretch

This is fucked. The manner in which droves of these maniacs come out of the woodwork when their precious 'hobby' is attacked just goes to show how far this damn community has yet to go in terms of maturing.

I wonder how he got on with Whedon.

I can't find it now but she had a list of all the subjects she would cover in future episodes, the last of which is examples of women done well in video games, so I expect that will be coming soon

Though that isn't the point, you wouldn't ask someone who was giving examples of racism to also show examples of where minorities were shown in a good light, and if they don't do so dismiss them as "unbalanced", "one sided" or just "fighting for their agenda"

Absolutely disgusting. The depressing thing is that it's not going to end. I've been following this thing since September, and it only feels like it's getting worse. I really hope that Twitter takes greater steps to help against harassment

Poor Anita, she must be crying all the time because of all of them threats!

It's really kind of incredible to see posters like this pop out of the woodwork in every single thread related to GamerGate, Anita, etc.
