Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Not played this for ages since there was a lack of key binding (being a 'leftie', I found it really hard to play with the default controls).

Was key binding patched in? As it's the only thing stopping me from play it.

Hey guys, I just bought this game on steam with the 25% sale. I only know that its like terraria

What am I in for?

It's a lot like Terraria in space, with spaceships as mobile mini bases and planets as random worlds. Crafting is nicer than in Terraria, though I'm not sure it's as fleshed out yet. Of course this update coming tonight adds a lot so I could be wrong on that now. Starbound has incredible music and atmosphere, but the boss battles aren't as nice as in Terraria (that could be changing tonight too, not sure).

Overall, it's an incredible game and if you liked Terraria even a little bit then you'll at least like Starbound, though it's likely you'll like it better. I do. Well worth the sale price, that's for damn sure.

Key rebinding should be in game with this update, yes.

AAAAAAND GAF SERVER IS UP.

Standard rules apply (aka, be nice, if you're NOT a GAF member, you better have a pretty good damn explanation how you got the server info).

Server is currently set to 16 players max, will lower if unable to handle that much load.

Welcome back, Starbounders.

Oh yes, it's so nice to play this game again. It's seriously one of the most relaxing games I've ever played.

Love all the new stuff as well.

Ooh! I'll definitely be visiting the GAF server from time to time. Don't hurt me. :P

EDIT: Wait, our old characters are gone again? This is getting annoying. My friend and I were fully decked out in Sector X!

sectors don't exist anymore

o.o

feels good to be up late playing on the GAF server again

Great stuff.

Tonight will by my first time playing in months.

They better not pull this no update nonsense again. It's early access. Holding 'stable' updates for close to a year is not cool.

Hum. I'm unable to craft a Stone Hoe. The recipe doesn't show at all when I'm using the Wooden crafting table.
Edit: Nevermind. The Stone Hoe no longer exists. It seems I need to craft a copper one with an anvil.

Oh thank the ChuckleHeads!

Got to play a bit before going to bed last night, having a blast with the new systems and Novakid. Liking that I have missions to do when I want to get around to them (though early in the game I find myself finishing them without realizing it since it's basic crafting stuff), loving the new combat system. Sad to see my guys were wiped. I forgot to screenshot my house. :(

That said, my Novakid is awesome. First planet there was a mine full of bad guys just a few feet away from spawn. I explored a bit, got some oil drums, tents, and floodlights so I can set up my own little base directly at spawn (will probably use the mines as the basis for a full blown house at some point...since I'm lazy).

I love loot in this game. Furniture-porn. ;)

Hey Ben, I played for a bit last night too, as a Novakid as well, and I also had a pretty large mine not far from my beam down point on my starter planet. This mine was full of crates and oil drums as well, got lots of beginner loot, it was also full of these yellow big bird type creatures who spewed acid spit at me. And at the bottom of the mine it opened up into HUGE caverns that I'm still exploring. I never even made it around the planet surface yet, kept getting distracted by things I'd come across, lol.

I'm going to play for many more hours tonight, can't wait!

I can't log in..what am I doing wrong? I got the updated info from that quote to see earlier.

Try again, I was doing a little work on the computer, trying to get the Starbound server setup to restart automatically in case it crashes.

Partial success, I've at least got the dumb thing to start automatically if WINDOWS reboots/crashes, but I still need to figure out how to get the Starbound program itself to restart if the actual program crashes instead. If anyone has any ideas, I'm all for it.

Well, except for any suggestions of switching to Linux.

Never tried it but isn't there a simple solution using the schedule-task every x minutes to execute the program but only if the program isn't already running ( because it crashed ).
Quickly glanced at google result, a batch script can check if a process is running so that could probably also be the answer.

I've found a few utilities on the web that could do that, but the problem I'm encountering is that whenever these things restart the program, the server process crashes. But if I restart manually, it doesn't crash.

At first I thought it was a time interval thing(the process was being restarted too quickly)so I managed to find a utility that can designate a wait interval. I set it to 3 minutes but even then it still crashes.

There's a couple more things I found that I'm going to try, but right now that's the problem I'm running into.

The game's been crashing quite a few times. First when my friend and I got near the first boss, then again when I put the crystals in the ship.

EDIT: Oh good. The quest didn't count and the crystals are gone because it crashed during the little bunny fixing gif. Guess I have to do the mining mission for a fourth time.

Noooo!

Starbound ran fine on my crappy laptop when it was first put on Steam but is now really choppy. Hopefully further optimization will help. Or I'll have to finally get a decent rig at some point.

Probably a stupid question, but there isn't a way to have character server bound ? The closest I can find is clearPlayerFiles but I doubt that's it.

I've had some slight frame drops as well when I played it earlier.
Also, I don't like the fact that now you slow down when you walk backwards :s it's a bit awkward

I went on the server for a bit and got my character set up, surprisingly, there was pretty much no noticeable lag whatsoever. Did they update the netcode?

Game generally seems to run much better as well :D. Can't wait to get back home and hopefully there'll be some people on the server then :). Feels good to be back!
Also did anyone else notice some new music during night?

Bought this when it first went up on Steam, then decided to wait to get into it till it was more fleshed out. Sounds like today's the day to get balls deep in this game!

Same here. Can't connect anymore.
Also, I completed the quests, but SAIL didn't unlock FTL. I think I'm good to re-create a character.

I feel the gravity on the starting planet is rather wild, you jump really high, enemies even more so :lol. Pls relocate to planet with more mass.
