Hipster is now comparable to a racial slur

That's implying that hipster is in some way shape or form comparable to the n word. It's extremely clear which one is worse, there's no argument to be had over which one is more offensive, period. And frankly it's stupid to be so offended by the term hipster.
I mean, I'm pretty sure that most people would agree that it's not even a fucking argument over which one is worse in the first place.
Both are insults. Yes, the n word is worse and this girl is an idiot for thinking they're the same, but she probably was offended by being labelled.
Hipster isn't a fucking insult and you're crazy if you think so.
Yes it is. If someone called me a hipster I would be offended.

Laughed out loud IRL.

She's dumb. Does she even know what racism is? The fuck?

Hipster has no meaning anyway. You might as well say, "young person who has bought clothes in the last 5 years."

It's not even close to what POC have to deal with.

I can't believe people are really offended by being called a hipster. I understand being annoyed, but offended? For real? I get called a nerd fairly often and it really doesn't bother me. I mean It's honestly whatever.

I know one damn thing; as a Black man, I much rather be insulted about my social behaviors than my race. That's for damn sure.

How? It's such a nonsense word. The only people who actually use it are people confused by some kind of fashion or media that released in the last 5 years and isn't super popular.

You obviously are free to be offended why whatever, but you really shouldn't shouldn't feel insulted or offended because the word doesn't really mean anything.

Some people use "hipster" in lieu of "douchebag" or "pretentious prick" but holy shit if someone said to me it was the same thing as being called a spic or wetback I would laugh in their faces so fucking hard and tell them to think about that one for a minute.

OP don't be alarmed, you just ran into an actual hipster

She basically told you that/admitted it. " It's like calling [person of said adjective] a derogatory version of [said adjective] ". However her analogy merely stapled in your implication, and then some
:) pop-corn worthy sheeeeit :)

Girl is very sensitive to the most basic shit, then blows it out of proportion with the worst analogy I've ever heard.

Call a black person a hipster and wait 10 seconds.

Call a black person a nigger and wait 2 seconds.

Compare responses.

This is it. I don't get why somebody would be so pissed at someone putting a name to the look they are trying so very hard to pull off. I went through a goth phase as a teenager and was referred to as one, both just descriptivly and as an insult, but that was the look I was going for so...

To compare being called a hipster to a racial slur is just... I'd have told her to 'Fuck. Off.' in a tone so italicized that the only was to accurately write it down would appear as two long horizontal lines.

I just don't get this whole hipster thing.

Also his gf sounds pretty dumb...
I think the difference between a nerd and a hipster is thus: A nerd is socially awkward and doesn't understand "fashion" and most likely doesn't give a fuck and finds the whole concept frivolous. A hipster is socially aware, understands fashion, and goes out of their way to look "different" and cares very much about their image, despite their sentiments to the contrary.

I liken hipsters to goth kids more than nerds personally. I mean, has anyone ever wondered what happened to all the 90's goth kids? Where the fuck did they all go? Well, they didn't go anywhere really.... they've evolved into hipsters.

But you didn't hear this from me...

I don't consider myself a hipster so the thought of someone else perceiving me that way bothers me.
If you ignore it, it goes away.
Can't that be applied to all insults? If that were the case, then no words should be considering offensive and verbal racism and insults should have no bearing against anyone.

Obviously that isn't how things work

hipsters are by definition those who get offended by the hipster label

I've posed this theory before but it wasn't very popular on gaf. This was back in the day where we'd have a monthly 20 page hipster thread with an incredible amount of upset about the label in each one.

Stop playing the offended card all the time.

what would happen if we all made threads for every idiot we ran into?

This is a special kind of idiot though.

Spot on, I see kids running around as young as 13-14 with a finely tuned style, funny enough saw a kid looking just like Urkel with a bigger high top, but he didn't come off awkward at all.

Kids got it so good
