That's actually precisely why they made party members AI-only in P3 - they wanted each party member to feel like their own player, separate from you. Of course in P4 they realized playability trumped theming soooo

As long as the background isn't used for navigation I have no issues with them leaving background text like that in Japanese.

Maybe I were lucky with my P3FES & P3P playthroughs but I didn't have any problems with the AI. Can't remember if it was off by default in P4 but if it was on by default then at somepoint I did change to manual. Order was P3FES -> P4 -> P3P.

You were definitely unbelievable lucky. I played P3FES after I beat P4 (BTW, they were set to AI-controller by default, but changing them to manual was the very first thing I did) with the party set in manual mode, and their retarded decisions across the entire game made me enjoy the game way less than I would have otherwise. I really, really really hope they never go back that route.

Pretty much all of Persona 3 and 4's background text was left untranslated to my knowledge, so provided that reading the signs isn't required to get around I don't think it'd be a problem.

Yeah, actually the AI was pretty nice in that respect. They usually reflect the personality of the character fairly well aside from some silly problems from time to time.

Well, it wasn't so funny on the last boss.
When he basically healed himself after I fought him for almost 2 hours...
I'll have to admit that I was rather weak though, as I didn't grind as much as I needed to.

I never had that happen myself, lol
