Amiibo Thread 3 | Where release dates are made up and preorders don't matter!

I dunno where that's coming from. I preordered Luigi and Toad from the Super Mario line from a GameStop in store about five hours ago. I'd be surprised if they stopped taking preorders since then.
Too lazy to check back a few pages if I'm being totally honest, I'm in bed on my phone about to go to sleep lol. Could have sworn I saw a post about it, but I could be mistaken. Thats why I asked if I read correctly, but I probably misread.

Just found out that Gamestop closed/Cancelled all my Wave 3 preorders. Yeah fuck this, I'm done and over it, it's honestly not worth dealing with this.

Me too, heh. Yeah, someone asked if GameStop had ceased taking preorders on the SM wave in store and some other posters misunderstood, talking like GameStop had stopped taking preorders. But I don't think it has.

You know the web site says closed when they're transferred to stores, right? Did you call the store?

I thought that meant they were cancelled? I haven't heard anything from Gamestop, I'll be sure to give them a call in the morning. I just really don't want to miss out on Dedede and Shulk! I was really feeling it before, but it's hard to always keep checking for these sometimes and miss out on amiibos like Rosie. I'm still hella worried at this point that I'm gonna be late by like 10 minutes when Wave 4 is finally up for preorder and not be able to preorder Ness. I NEEED NEEEESSSSSS

Since I work there I'll know final word tomorrow. I'll report back.

If the status no longer says "Open" and it says "Closed" it means they are actually processing your order now and its ready to ship to home/store. It's "closed" because you cannot longer make any changes to the order.

Zero is definitely the best! Really contemplating picking up the D-arts Black Zero figure on Amazon.
Also not the biggest fan of the character design but the mega man X Zero games on gameboy advance are really good!

HA! Been thinking the same exact thing.
If you like the Zero games on the gameboy advance and have any sort of moderate interest in Shaman King checkout Master of Spirits 1 and 2 on the GBA both are wonderful clones of gameplay.

This goes for you too Blue Namagem

I'm passing on New 3DSXL for the hope that a Xenoblade one will pop and I'm getting MM 3D LE from Amazon and BestBuy for MH4U because Walmart had a pricing error and was able to pricematch that. Either way, my wallet is getting raided that day especially if I can find certain wave 3 amiibo out in the wild.

I wish I still had my copy of Master of Spirits 1.

Can I play as Horohoro in any of those?

Does this mean that I can technically pick up my Shulk pre-orders at that time as well?

Man, those S Flags were pretty obnoxious. I had fun though guys! Let's play again. :P

Haha, fun stuff!

Why'd you leave, Diggeh? Wanted to have one last one, I was just turning off the items!

I got kicked! Silly Nintendo. You've got a pretty darn good Mega Man!

PSSH. You think I haven't played those? Those games were AMAAAAZIIIIING.

Is it just me or is Nintendo's strategy pretty similar:

RXQ4vBa.png

People keep making the comparison, but the strategies really aren't the same. Ty randomly discontinued Beanie Babies in such a way that it was impossible to know which ones would get long runs and which ones would get short runs. Thus, the initial demand for each Beanie Baby was higher because the collectors never knew which ones would be discontinued first, meaning they'd have to buy as many as possible to be safe. That meant people wound up buying several of what became quite common Beanie Babies without knowing it.

That's not the case with amiibo: we all knew Mario, Peach, Bowser, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Zelda, etc. would be easy to find for a long time, hence why many of those (particularly the infamous Peach) are being passed on by people who would have otherwise bought them. Similarly, once we found out certain amiibos were to become discontinued people started somewhat easily picking out which ones would be future rares (we all knew Ike and the exclusives would be for instance) and started exclusively focusing on those. And then it turns out more characters than people expected were to be rare, so people passed on some they never thought would be (such as Dedede and sort of Fox).

So whereas Ty managed to create near equal demand around all Beanie Babies, even the far more produced ones by keeping everyone on their toes, Nintendo has created a market that revolves around their most produced and stocked products being completely ignored, despite being based off of their most universally well-known and loved characters, and their least produced products being fought over in an over-priced secondary marketplace. Now everyone is stuck with 40 Marios and Peaches, and 10 empty character pegs. So if they were trying some crazy strategy to drum up demand, they did so horribly. Especially since it's already driving retailers nuts. They've all had nothing but issues and things are already starting to give. Target's not going to bother stocking wave 3B on shelves, because they'll just be gone 15 minutes after opening and NEVER be replenished, leaving tons of empty shelf space after building plan-o-grams based around the new characters. That just hurts Nintendo.

(what also hurts Nintendo: most amiibo fans are young adults, many of whom, unlike the children largely behind Beanie Babies, are just getting fed up with all the nonsense and calling it quits)

The real situation is a laundry list of factors, none of which have to do with forced scarcity to drive up demand:

  1. Nintendo is new to the toy market*, and as such has relatively low production capacity out of the gate.
  2. Their initial toy line consists of roughly 50 characters that are being released in rapid succession.
  3. Shelf-space is a limited commodity and thus only so many characters can be stocked at once.
  4. More popular characters in theory should sell much more, and thus must be prioritized on the production lines and store shelves
  5. All the waves we've seen so far were produced in November/December or earlier, meaning Nintendo never had time to adapt to demand issues...
  6. ...which is also why we haven't seen reprints hit shelves yet: it takes months from factory to shelves.
  7. Nintendo was producing characters to expected demand, but then news of discontinuations hit meaning the demand for lower-run characters skyrocketed.**
  8. (US only) The port strikes are fucking with oversees shipments
  9. (US only) NOA is infamous for lowballing demand.
*yes, they were a toy company for decades, but they haven't sold toys first-hand since the early 80's.
**Wii Fit Trainer and Villager are the best examples of this. It took nearly a month for them to disappear, and demand for them only sprung up once people realized they had and weren't going to be restocked. This likely would have been the case with later rares, but since people knew that it would happen again, we have characters like Sheik selling out instantly.

I actually kinda like the S Flag/Mushroom combi, things get so insane, I love it!

Def wanna play again!

Super insane. I'm oddly drawn to the concept! Maybe toss in some Smart Bombs to make it tough to keep holding them. :P

I'd say if I could drive, I would go, but it's way too cold at this time of year for me to even consider going anyway.

It became too cold the moment I felt a special kind of cold.

They absolutely can. All the people lining up on that day (or at midnight) are going to be sorely disappointed. Most stores probably won't even get extras.

right, I forgot to ask that when I went to my gamestop guy and he said "I have to be honest with you...we're probably not going to get more than the pre-order amount, if even that"

I could be totally wrong, but it was the same thing for Falcon and Pit. They arrived past the street date and there was only the pre-orders. My store only has 4 pre-orders, but multiply that by 4,000 or so (other stores might have more) and that's a lot of Shulk to stock already.

mine said they had 6 pre-ordered. Seeing that there's a track record of villager, pit, and little mac never hitting the shelves there...I can't keep my hopes up, but I'll check daily just in case
