All of the PSP releases are clearly the best versions. EP portable was never localized, however, so the only option for an English speaker right now would be to play the PSX version via PSN.

Yeah, I checked after posting. That's kinda horseshit. Especially since the PSP version of IS appears to be the one with crazy go nuts encounters.

Ah, so we have to play the PSP version of IS, but to play EP we have to play the PSN version on PS3? I don't know why Atlus screwed this up so badly, nor do I really understand why they couldn't make them available for both platforms since they are just PSX ports/emulation.

It's a PS1 game. You can play PS1 games on PSP and Vita.

I'm in the Vita store right now and I see:
Persona 1: PSP
Persona 2 IS: PSP
Persona 2 EP: PS1

Ah sorry, forgot that. That's why I knew I had to get a Vita or PSTV to play these. For me the PSTV is the only real option (prefer RPGs on big screen), so...maybe I'll just have to pony up and buy one. From what I've heard, at least those games and P4G should work fine with it. I'll just write "PESRONA MACHINE" on the side of it.

Just checked the Store on my PSTV and they are all showing up (plus P3P and P4G), you should be OK (assuming you're in NA).

EDIT: Make sure you don't mess up the "PESRONA MACHINE" part, heh.

Considering how often Atlus does sales on PSN, I guess I'll wait for a sale to buy them all.

But just so I know: for Innocent Sin is it better to track down a physical copy of the PS1 game?

EDIT: No wait, according to Wikipedia Innocent Sin on PS1 never got localized, so I guess it's not an option.

So, I'm not gonna disagree with the guy that said it was worse on the PSP, but as someone that's playing the PSP version right now I want to mention that it's totally playable. If a physical edition costs like 40$ instead of the PSN price (19.99$?) I'd recommend still the PSP one.

Edit: Just saw your edit. Now it even makes sense that they're not on PSN.

Thanks for checking, cool. And hah...it was a joke from the thread yesterday, when IGN tweeted using "#pesrona5" ;)

PSP Persona 2 IS breaks the difficulty(makes it braindead easy) and nonsensically ramps up the random encounter rate at the same time, so I wouldn't say the PSP releases are clearly better.

I guess there's that—I didn't play the original P2:IS—but I liked the new UI and the new soundtrack.

I loved Persona: Revelations and Persona: Eternal Punishment / Innocent Sin. But.. since this re-direction of the franchise, I just don't get it.

I was enthusiastic about playing Persona 4 Golden. But then, I literally spent like 2 hours suffering through the worst prologue ever. Not a single moment of freedom or action, just horrible hand holding story sequences. I seriously don't get this new direction at all.

Persona 4 has a notoriously long prologue, but it's kind of necessary to set up the whole murder mystery. The game doesn't really open up until after you get your second party member.

Yeah.

I started my first IS playthrough yesterday and the high encounter rates and slow battles really make the game feel like a slog (especially compared to P1). You get used to it though.

The only thing bad about Innocent Sin is the encounter rate. It's definitely worth a play because the story and characters are amazing. If you turn off battle animation and use a bunch of fusion spells you can tear through battles like it's nothing. Easily the easiest SMT game I've played.

I wonder when they will start talking about other media stuff. They added so much for Persona 4 in terms of shows, and spin offs but the original game doesn't feel like it was designed in such a way to encourage all of that. I would think P5 would have been built from the beginning with animation series, feature films, and spin offs in mind. Maybe we will get direct sequel like P2 as well. Give the game the Level 5 treatment.

Nope. I'm pretty sure Hashino straight up said that that's not how they design their games, because that would make for a lesser, incomplete experience that left players potentially unsatisfied. Knowing that kind of director, I heavily doubt he'd be the kind to waste time thinking about that when directing a game like Persona 5. All that stuff comes bolted on afterwards.

Yeah which is why whenever somebody gets asked whether or not to watch the P4 Anime or play the game, fans always say the game. Anime is just for fanservice, and that's all.

I don't get the criticism for the prologue in Persona 4. It isn't really that long and really pieces everything together so it makes sense. I felt like with Persona 3, it just was so fast and sudden it didn't really make sense naturally with what was going. I mean, the way how
Junpei
was just thrown in the team as "some guy they found at a gas station" was too convienent and too weirdly unnatural.

The basic idea is certainly easier to expand on. Persona 3 had a pretty definite ending. Persona 4 would feel weird with teenagers solving a second murder mystery. A team of theives lends itself to additional stories well though.

But we don't know how Persona 5 ends (or much about the actual premise, either). Hashino wouldn't leave some open-ended, "What kind of hijinx will they get up to next!?" ending for the express purpose of P5 spin-offs.

Considering the gameplay footage we saw supposedly takes place on the first day of school, then is it safe to assume they've heard the complaints about Persona 4's slow beginning and fixed it with a more dynamic opening act?

True. I hope if that stuff does come it isn't just an abridged retelling again.

Considering the Phantom Thief fame is already there before the game event (highly implied though), it's very possible that we'll have a quicker, and more dynamic prologue.

Maybe, I mean you guys don't think that atlus kept everything to the first day so that they wouldn't spoil when these thing's take place in the story. All Persona games start the 11th right? I have a hard time believing that you do all those things in one day. Especially the first day.

Definitely possible but at the same time I think is just a place holder. That's a very active first day. Wouldn't be surprised if that was more the first couple days or weeks.

And the only reason it'll launch on PS4 as well is because of SCEJ.

Not necessarily.
“Sega released Yakuza at the PlayStation 4’s launch, so they have some know-how when it comes to making software for the current generation consoles, which I believe we can share as needed,” says Sugino.

He continues, “Compared to Atlus, Sega are on a much bigger scale [as developers], and our respective know-how is completely different. They’re much more advanced than us when it comes to tools and middleware.”

Sugino also explains that if you look at the bigger picture, the Sega Sammy group has various small companies within it, all with their own expertise; so if Atlus felt the need to get something done a certain way, they could always ask Sega Sammy.
Interview was a month before Persona 5's PS4 announcement.

So I started Persona 2: IS a few hours ago because everybody was talking about how they were getting P2 vibes from the P5 teasers. I'm really liking it so far, especially because of how that game does cutscenes only using sprites and their movement is pretty charming. Encounter rate seems nuts, though.

Also, since people were hating on the SMT negotiation system: How you recruit demons in Persona 2 is actually quite fun and doesn't feel very random at all. You have 4 gauges for each of the demon's emotions which show you how your dialogue choices affect their mood and I don't think any of them have just asked me for random items, health or money yet. So most frustrating parts of negotation are not an issue in P2. One demon I convinced but had too low of a level for even gave me money for my troubles! Plus, each of your party members also has his own unique actions they can do to interact with demons which affects them differently. It's really cool, so far.

If they did negotiation as a mixture of P2 and some new systems I'd be down for it. Like I said, they could incorporate S-Links into the equation to make interactions with demons whose arcana's S-Link you have a high level in give you a bonus or more options.

Innocent Sin actually has some of the less random negotiations in the series if you actually pay attention to the demon personalities.

There isn't even much tarots grinding if you actually understand how Free Tarots work.

I thought about that possibility too, but I wouldn't be opposed to all those things actually happening in the first day. If you think about it, it's not that unreasonable. The school events and walking around the city happen at daytime, the bar scene could be them setting up their heist, and at nighttime you would go to the dungeon shown in the trailer which would serve as sort of a tutorial mission. If you think about it even though it seems like a lot of events in a trailer, it wouldn't be that unreasonable for it to correspond to a single day in the game (I'm sure if you picked a single busy day of P4 or P3 and stretched it out for a trailer it would also seem bigger than it actually is), and besides the characters and enemies were pretty low level.

Even though I loved P4's slow beginning and atmosphere/character/story-building, other people don't seem to hold it in high regards so a faster paced opening act would be ideal to hook new fans right away. Also it'd be nice to be able to reccomend it to people without telling them they'll have to cope with a 3~4 hour prologue with nothing but dialogues lol

Yeah, doing everything on the first will be overwhelming gameplay and story wise. The date might be just placeholder because Atlus doesn't want to spoil too much (or just forgot to changed it :P). But it still possible that those event happened on single day, which mean the Protagonist, Ryuji, Anne, and Morgana already know each other before 4/11 (also possibly already doing some heist). If this is the route they take, started right when the shit happened, then how our protagonist got his persona would be told via flashback or some sort. I mean, it have been twice that the game started with a long nosed bald old man offering contract to our protagonist in their dream then actual shits happened right?

Thanks!

-So the Early morning, Morning, Afternoon and Evening are labeled. Maybe the date isn't a placeholder after all. Maybe the game starts before April 11th, and maybe the casino sequence isn't on April 11th, so the rest would be possible.

-The translation says "Shujin High School Winter Uniform". So it looks like that's the name of the school then.

- "Take an injection" in the medical menu? So you can instant heal in some way? Kind of like in Persona Q maybe? Your health doesn't regenerate when leaving Tartarus/Shadow World? Or maybe there is no shadow world so the health carries over everywhere, including school where you could sleep to heal but miss some knowledge (like in Persona 3 where you could sleep if fatigued by too much dungeon crawling?)

112 pages already. The hype is real.

How good is this going to sell? It's been a long time since Persona 4. Is this a millions seller?

Persona 4 Golden had shipped (including digital sales) 700 000 as of December 2013, so a year after its launch. It charted in Japan again recently because of the Golden Animation and they're having a budget re-release (greatest hits/whatever you want to call it) soon. So P4G itself is not far off 1M and that's on Vita. So yes, I think Persona 5 has the 1M sales within reach.

I'm honestly surprised Xbox One isn't getting Persona 5 at least in the West. Perhaps Catherine, and the Arena games didn't do so well on the 360?

They did awful in Japan, of course. They didn't bother releasing a P4AU Xbox 360 SKU in Japan. The developers deciding not to put resources into a 360/XB1 version of P5 due to this combined with the fact that a mainline Persona game has never been on anything other than Sony platforms (except for P1 on PC) doesn't really make it that surprising, to me.

All of us here are exciting for mothafucka persona 5 it's all about the one world one love but the battle goes on this thread you hear me baby baby baby baby persona is mathafuckin love now i know you whatcha thinking this dude is tripping and troll i aint troll i just love persona mathafuckin 5 and i can't hold it imma going hood on this thread now i know this post is gonna get ignored but i had to get this out of ma system you feel it baby baby baby persona 5 is coming Greatness is coming and it's Dangerous in a good way it's hot baby you can't touch it fear's awake anger beats loud face reality never beat charity the enemy you're fighting covers whole society damn right nothing though because fear is not real baby baby baby yeah but danger is very real and persona 5 is Dangerous and i love it I love all of you and have a very good day

It probably wouldn't sell that well, given the demographics of your average Xbox player. Too Japanese.
