Persona 5 New Trailer

I did a mildly interesting analysis of Persona games, release dates, and platforms. This may be the biggest Persona game solely because it's releasing on a current gen console. Not since Persona 1 have any of them released without a next gen console on the horizon or well into a next generation already (Persona 4).

Well, it was originally a PS3 game and is basically being ported to PS4 (probably with increased resolution and framerate), so it was basically going to release after the generation was already over and calling it current gen is, while technically accurate, a little disingenuous.

Watching the trailer again and why does the MC's eyes change color so many times. They go from like black to gray then red to yellow. Does that mean something?

I agree it isn't a current gen game, however, I feel it's availability on a current gen console will lend it an increase in sales.

Unsure about the black/grey thing.

Yellow is typically Shadow form in Persona games. People suspect it is him turning into his persona, which might account for it. Or it might be symbolic of the way the characters might be able to 'go dark'.

Red is just in the anime section. The other characters also have different eye colours (Anne is Green instead of grey/blue and Ryuji is Yellow instead of brown), so people who think the game might go for a Sins theme reckon it might be symbolic of their Sins (Red=Wrath, Green=Envy, Yellow=Greed).

Now that I can agree with.

I'm hoping the stylisation will look good enough that they might be able to reuse the assets on future PS4 games, and we get a PS2-era SMT resurgence.

Things Famitsu asked the director Hashino about:

-Main Protagonist's character
-Characters other than the Protagonist
-'Glory' and 'Destruction', the key words that was used in the poster
-Shujin Gakuen High School
-Characters skating on the Highway
-The battle system and Dungeon
-Close range Weapon and Long range weapon
-Sandman and Jack O Lantern you see in the trailer
-Military shop and hospital

Things famitsu asked Character designer Soejima about:

-Main Protagonist's design
-Main Protagonist's Persona design
-Main logo design

Shadows in Persona 4 are yellow. If you still have to defeat characters shadows in that game the sequence will make sense. You summon Personas, but what you're seeing is the MC shadow being transformed in a boss you'll have to fight. Fighting your own shadow would be a nice "tutorial fight".

Gray is probably his normal color.

And Red must be the special one he uses in the shadow world. It may be bounded to each character sin, as others have said.

This week's famitsu cover is Persona 5, as expected.

Cool. When is the info leaking? :)

-Characters skating on the Highway

I still want to think that scene is just an in-joke by the development team, because in Persona 3 if you time presses of the analog stick with a certain rhythm you can make the protagonist skate around on one foot...

Geez.. They become even better and better

-main protag's Persona name is "Arsene"

-the dungeon from PV is NOT randomly generated

Yeah randomly generating that dungeon would be an impressive feat, and the almost fixed camera angle in the platforming section almost proved that. (they were intentionally showing us the lower part of the room)

Nice, nice. I liked Tartarus as randomly generated dungeon but I don't think you could just keep making it all random, given how all other SMT games had/have regular dungeons.

Saddle up boys because we are getting SMT dungeons.

I hope you like floor panels!

I wouldn't assume that. Persona is generally designed very differently from SMT these days in terms of progression and level design.

Hashino doesn't appear to have said that there are no random dungeons in the game, only that the dungeon we saw in the PV is not randomly generated. He also mentions that they will offer a variety of settings and gimmicks in the game to present situations where the players have to overcome challenges like a phantom thief would.

That suggests to me that the story dungeons will be more about fun puzzle-ish scenarios than tough-as-nails dungeon crawling.

I'm perfectly fine with this tbh. I don't need every dungeon to be hand designed, but as long as the main story ones are, I'll be happy.

Provided they're fun of course. Haha.

Interesting. I wonder if we'll get both designed dungeons and random dungeons? That would be nice.

Just give me one optional dungeon filled with SMT trap bullshit and I'll be happy.
Even SMTIV didn't have floor panel traps though.
Boo, I really wanted to see the reaction of people having to go through one of those trapdoor dungeons filled with damage panels

It seems like Persona 5 will have more similarities to mainline SMT after 3 and 4 went a different route.

The fact that we're seeing handcrafted dungeons again probably is a sign that the series has a quite higher budget than before. Games have a lot of voiced stuff, so probably a good part of the money went to hiring good VAs and recording their lines.

Expected. Awesome but expected. It sounded like an instrumental more than a standalone song IMO.

Arsene? Not even remotely subtle . :)

Can we change the MC name in this game like P3/4 or do we have to stick with Arsene?

They should have a fixed surname but let people use the name they want IMO. That way they will have more option aside the usual senpai/pal/leader stuff. And I want to be Rupin-senpai lol.

FOEs

I wouldn't be opposed to something like the Tower of Kagatsuchi or the Diet Building from Nocturne either. Shibuya IS pretty close to the latter...

Arsene is Persona's name, not MC's name.

Unless I'm reading the posts wrong, Arsene is the Persona's name, not the MC's. MC is already confirmed to be nameless iirc (So like P3/P4).

No, certainly not. Hashino often said that P3&4 players will "feel right at home".

But there will be a lot more changes between P4 and P5 than between P3 and P4.

Franky I must ask, is anyone kinda afraid they are over hyping the game? I personally am excepting this game it be just as amazing as my first play through of Persona 4 Golden. The reason I brought this up is there have been a few hyped up games that fail to deliver in the past :/ and this is not a troll post. Persona series has been one of my favorites since I watched the anime which led into playing the games and collecting figures.
