Garfield is out, who do you want as the Spectacular Spider-man?

I'm not convinced that Glover has the drama chops to pull it off. He's funny to be sure, but I don't know. Hmm.

Miles Morales. He's the newest spider man in the comics. Also lol at it making him black means "trendy" holy shit

I think what they mean is that doing it just for "diversity" and not putting any real thought into it is "trendy".

I don't mind changing him as long as the actor fits, but most people know Peter Parker as white, and it's unlikely that they'll change that.

Making Miles Morales the main on the other hand, maybe. That would be cool. I can see people being okay with a diverse Spider-Man, as long as it's a "new" character. For some reason, changing the race of an established character ruffles more feathers.

Donald Glover would be perfect but I have no faith that it will happen
Donald Glover - How old is he, anyway?
He's far too old to be Miles Morales, & Marvel is going for Peter Parker (& will likely save the Miles story for much later when the Peter Parker actor's contract is up).

Marvel gave Donald Glover a consolation prize as the voice of Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

Are they seriously going to do another fucking reboot? This shit is getting out of hand. It is so stupid. We have to see Peter Parker realize he is Spider-Man yet again? Three times!?!

There's already been reports that Marvel won't do an origin story...Spidey will already be established and there won't be a romance focus.

Spider-Man is faceless and could be anyone under the mask is most of the reason. It's not like Marvel is against making a different variation of Spider-Man. There's Miles Morales and they tried an Indian variation a few years ago.

It also plays into the whole outcast role. Being a nerdy white guy isn't as much of a social outcast role as it was 50 years ago.

That makes sense to me. I think Donald Glover would be great in the role, I just got curious when it started to look like the people on the internet went from wanting him specifically for the role to a position of 'anyone that isn't white'.

There's no reason Peter Parker can't be black though.

I feel like wading into this will only go bad, as people will mistake me for one of those people that takes to twitter and gets all pissed off when a previously white character is now black. That's not me at all. I'm just curious. I don't see anyone clamoring for an Indian Superman or an asian Batman. Why in particular are so many people wanting a black Peter Parker? It makes no difference to me, I just don't see similar calls for black actors when any other comic character casting is being discussed.
He is a wise-ass teen swinging around NYC. More than a super soldier from WW2, a billionaire Playboy/engineer, or a Norse god, changing the race of Spider-Man not only wouldn't be shoehorned, it would simply make sense.

On another level, it would also have the benefit of distancing from the recent Spider-Man films instead of just recasting and rebooting him yet again with a similar actor.

Jensen Ackles would be amazing but I think he's probably too old.

That's what they need though Jensen or Gyllenhall would be great BECAUSE they are older.

Spider-Man is so ubiquitous that everyone knows his origins by now. Let's skip to where he's been fighting for a decade or two and is a bit worn down.

He's too old for Peter Parker as well, given that Marvel is going for a younger Peter Parker. Plus Marvel tends to cast their leads as closely to their actual race in the comics as possible (side characters are another story).

Isn't it between the Maze Runner and Percy Jackson?

I'd rather keep Garfield, but I understand why he has to go. Gotta completely wash our hands of that ASM garbage. I have faith in Marvel to do the right thing here.

There have been different spider men some of different race ( miles morales) and a few spider women. Also spider man is a relatable to a lot of people. It doesn't hurt to have him be a different race or ethnicity so why not? The avengers is current an all white group that's supposed to represent America but currently they represent an America that doesn't exist anymore. I mean think about how juiced you would be to look up at a marvel movie as a young black kid and see a black spider man! You'd be hella stoked since all the other avengers are white. On top of this were I live and were I work it's so mixed culturally so it's very jarring to see a movie and the cast is all white, that's not the world I live in so it kinda takes me out of the film. All in all Peter Parker being white is just as needed as him being black so it doesn't matter if he gets a black actor to play him, so why not?

A black kid in new york and a white kid in new york would have 2 very different stories. Especially nowadays.

except for the insulting tokenism

How is casting Donald Glover as Spidey automatically making him a token? Can't he just be an actor that's good for the part? That reminds me of some reactions on twitter after the Star Wars trailer complaining that Disney was being 'politically correct' by casting a black guy in the lead.

Edit: Wait are you the same guy that came after me in the other thread when I suggested Donald Glover because that wouldn't be 'true' to the character because he wasn't white?

Someone who looks like this Peter Parker.

I saw this cartoon before reading the comics so he is the OG for me.

My un-educated suggestion with no knowledge of acting ability and just based on trailers is the kid from Kingsmen...he seems like a stud.

But whoever they get, I hope they have the same frame as Garfield. He wore the suit well.

Garfield is almost glover's age. Also despite the age Glover still looks young as in young adult young. Watch Community and he naturally fits as a college student. Since it's not gonna be a origin story then having spidey be in high school seems like a low possibility.

I assume Marvel is going to want someone who can be the face of the MCU with RDJ leaving. Also having someone younger would work better in contrast with all the older actors. Jensen and Gyllenhall are roughly the same age as the rest of the MCU crew.

Also didn't the leaks point towards them looking at younger actors anyway?

Going with an early 20s Spidey is a problem. They need to completely sidestep the origin story and go with a 30s version. He's been around on the street level for awhile just doing his thing.

Switching the race of a established character speaks to the fact that Hollywood and society has no faith in minority characters. Especially when there are hundreds of great minroity comic characters. The new Beetle is great, but her story is her own, she just buys the beetle mantle.
