Project Scissors: NightCry (Clock Tower Spiritual Successor) PC Kickstarter ($300k)

Yeesh, that trailer. Tits and framerate, a point and click adventure.

Hard to judge the framerate from such early footage, especially given that the kickstarter is for a version that runs on better hardware.

Also, nothing wrong with tits, but please let's not go down that dark path of conversation.

Kono-san held an AMA on reddit earlier, and will be returning later to answer further questions.

14 days passed and it only reached 19%. They should have made a 3 month long campaign instead of one.

The kickstarter people have said they've found that generally that just means you're spreading out the contributions, and ultimately the total won't really be any higher.

I think the main problem is still awareness. Hell, given the team behind this, I think there's still a ton of people on GAF who don't realize this game would likely be right up their alley.

New update talking about the gameplay loop and the smartphone:

Hey there horror fans!

We’ve been showing quite a bit of the game for some time now, and we’re just getting started. Today, we’re introducing game systems that are going to be available in the final game, so you know what’s at your disposal when evil begins stalking you!

First up we’ve got a simple explanation of NightCry’s basic gameplay. Pay close attention, because what’s to come is your lifeblood going forward.

Well, that seems simple enough. But wait, is that it? Is that all that NightCry offers?

Oh wait, no...there’s more! Early on in the game, your character will find a smartphone that they’ll be able to use to contact other survivors, illuminate their surroundings, and gain new clues and information to stay alive.

The smartphone’s call function is incredibly useful, but there’s more to the smartphone than just that!

Well I’ll be! By using the smartphone, you’ll be able to see more of your surroundings, and even uncover clues and objects you otherwise couldn’t see without proper light!

That’s right! Even social media can be your ally. Use SnapNPost to gain new information, find out more about others you’ve met, and even clues to the insanity around you!

I hope this game gets funded, maybe if this was a big RPG, people would dig it more as many of those Kickstarters get funded. Maybe it just doesn't look promising to people?

A peek at the physical version~!
Hi everyone,

A quick but cool update!

We know backers have been really curious about the physical edition of NightCry, and we’re happy to oblige! Mind you, this is not the final box art for the game, but it should give backers a great first look at what we have in mind.

What do you think? What art would you like to see on the final box art for NightCry?

I just watched the Gamecenter CX episode for Clock Tower (SNES) last night and I was reminded that this kickstarter is going on.

games with no combat mechanics yet dangerous situations, I just love em'.

the Clock Tower games are still such singular experiences, I can't even think of any indie games that were comparable.

So yeah, I'm in for this.

Polygon posted this article about the Kickstarter:

Sad to see it struggling so much. At least they are acknowledging mistakes made, I guess.

It is IMO struggling for a variety of reasons:

-An enhanced version of a mobile/VITA game...mobile ports don't sit well with some PC gamers
-Lackluster visuals due to being a mobile port
-Voluptuous main character looks kind of oft putting and seems stereotypical of Japanese developers
-Point and click interface unlike Haunting Ground/Demento which enabled direct control
I actually wouldn't mind if they allowed both interfaces
-Sneaking around in loud sounding high heels...really?
-Poor launch time....we don't live in Japan. Also, they should have studied when to actually launch a kickstarter from other successful ones.
-Should have showed more gameplay footage up front. Didn't really get an idea of the additional gameplay until later in the campaign. It should have been revealed up front.
-Some current gen consoles gamers expect a console version especially if a PC version is going to be made and an existing console version (VITA) is already in dev

They got a second wind starting on the 9th.

2/9 - $14k
2/10 - $21k
2/11 - $7k (so far)

Looks like there's a decent chance that they'll get close enough in the next few days that they'll be able to rally for a big finish and just barely reach the goal.

I hope they make it. Putting up the 20$ tier was a good move.

I hope so too, but I'm not quite convinced they have a decent chance. A chance? Sure. But a decent one? Their next few updates are going to need to make much bigger waves. I know Kicktraq doesn't factor in the "last big push" or whatever happens on these things, but it's still only trending at just above half the needed amount.

They had three 10k backers between Feb. 9 and 10th. I'm not sure that can be replicated.

I hear you. If they had handled a few things differently from the start I think they'd be a lot further along but that can't be changed now. Hopefully more pledges come in and with the goal getting closer it might convince others to finally jump in too. This is certainly one of those games I thought we had zero chance of ever seeing again(spiritual successor or otherwise).

An update to celebrate $100k, talking about one of their concept artists and showing off his work:

Hey horror fans!

Having hit the $100k milestone, we thought it would be the right time to announce the involvement of a talented member in the Project Scissors team.

Talented artist Chris Darril, creator of indie horror title Remothered and a nominated member of the scientific academy board committee, IUDAV, has been providing fantastic concept art for NightCry, and the work he’s done has been absolutely incredible! Chris’ concept art should also give all of you out there a better idea of the environments you will be traveling through outside of what we’ve shown so far.

Check it out for yourself:

And here’s one you might have already seen!

We’re incredibly honored to have Chris Darril as part of the Project Scissors team. His unique eye for dark horror art has helped so much in defining the world of NightCry.

Please join us in giving Chris Darril a round of applause for his amazing work!!

do we get money back if not funded?

Backers don't get charged until the campaign ends and is successfully funded. If it doesn't reach the goal, no money will trade hands.

I know it's just a game and all, but it seems so stupid that she would keep wearing high heels when the game is about running for your life. Also doesn't help that they make a lot of noise whenever she walks.

The noise was pretty off putting for sure\I just figure it is still really early in development and that'll change.

At least they have gameplay. Unsung whatever made 660k and didn't show any in-game content.

And this is by an established team of survival horror devs, at that.
