Breaks my damn heart just thinking about it. GamerGate didn't just set the public perception of gaming back a decade, but game development as well.
I am doubtful the ramifications of Gamer-Gate are at all that great in the public sphere, where few would recognize the term, key people, events, et cetera.
However, I would sadly agree with your assessment of the private sphere. If it is affecting females as young as twelve, then the affects are greater than a decade. Certain industry members have been working for forty years on videogames/related subjects. I can only imagine the creative talent vanished as these women pursue different careers, thus enabling the cycle of "women not being in the industry making it male dominated which scares off other women which means women are not being in the industry" ad infinitum. I am disappointed in this fact rather than how any public perception is, although this would assist it. It only continues the trend of certain work set aside for men, and certain work set aside for women.

Some say gamersgate was about changing courruption in games jorunalism (Something rather stupid in my view because game journalism does not exist regadless of how people want it to or delude themselves into it. And there is another group of people who mark the gamersgate people as trolls and shitty people and vise versa, personally I just think it's opportunists making a stink with labels.
With time I'm sure it will calm down. If you want your little sister into gaming foster her interest and give her support.
As to we need more of any group of people who are a outgroup of the current crop of developers, you'd need to change societal norms make education more affordable many things.

I've had a few friends in tech mention that gamergate has shown some of their colleagues systemic sexism is an very real element in the industry and culture. Its a very minute bright side to this cesspool, but at least it's something.

I was talking about gamergate in general; not this guy specifically. That said, I think it's pretty save to say gators played an active role in encouraging him to target Brianna.

Focusing on the positive aspects of women in the game development industry would probably go a long way to helping change this.
I think it would be similar to news outlets reporting that the economy is doing terribly, and then it continues because people are afraid to spend; while reporting that the economy is starting to improve may influence people to be more confident in their spending habits.
If you want to be a game developer, don't let anyone stop you or drive you away by telling you how horrible it is; spite can be a great driving force and motivate you to accomplish great things.

Maybe an off topic rant, but I'm so sick of the insular nature of gaming culture. It's annoying that we call cinematic games, movies, unworthy of the name game. It's ridiculous that we call people who play Angry Birds casuals who know nothing about "true" gaming. It's disappointing that we call Gone Home a walking simulator devoid of gameplay. It's sad that we aren't encouraging new experiences, and welcoming people to share in our beloved hobby. It's disheartening to hear people trying to box in their definition of what a game is, and what a game isn't.
The whole GamerGate situation just seems so pathetic. And the fact that this is actively causing young people to think twice about a future in this industry saddens me.
