I gave a very good friend of mine 2,5k Euro. He wanted to give the money back within one year. That was ~ 4 years ago. Until today, I got 850€ back. I have still contact to him and im pretty sure I will get my money back, but thats pretty hard for him.
I don't need that money at the moment (got enough savings), but thats sucks. I would never lent money again (especially to friends, because that ruins every friendship).

What a terrible way to learn this lesson: never give/borrow money to someone else with the expectation of getting it back or getting a favor in return at a later date. I never got burned too badly but it did take me several close-enough incidents to finally get this message drilled into my head.

oh god kipp. I've done it too, gave someone 300euro's who promised they'd pay me back the next week...never saw him again and heard he'd caught a plane with the money.

I was mad as hell for a long time but like someone else said, just take it as a lesson learned.

Oh man. That doubly sucks. One, because of the money obviously, but two, because like you said, I'm sure that was a massive burden on the friendship. That's got to be a huge elephant in the room.
What's the right thing to do in a situation like that? Your friend needs money, and being his friend you'd want to help him out if you can. If you do it places a huge burden on the friendship. If you don't you've left your friend out in the cold.
That's a lose-lose situation if I've ever heard of one.

So I ended up lending this guy $200. He was supposed to pay it back 5 days ago and has so far ignored my PMs asking him about it.

I've got his full name, address, and home phone number, but I don't really know how that can help me get my money back.

Any advice?

I hear you. Honestly, whenever I loan money, I act like I'm never going to see it again. That way when/if it's not paid back, I'm not too frustrated by it.

Here's a bit of irony.

I lent a friend $1500 with the expectation that I'd get it back in 2 or 3 months.
I think it was month 3 or 4 and I still hadnt gotten it back as his plan for coming up with the money fell through.

At the time, a druggie he knew needed bail money for doing some stupid druggie shit. My friend, knowing he owes me money, decides to low ball the fuck out of this dude for his kids 4 wheeler, basically just the amount for bail.
The druggie being a druggie finds his savior. Gets like 30% of the value of the 4 wheeler and my friend puts that shit on Craigslist next day and I have my money.

Nope. People saw from a post that he tried heroin once (and who knows how long ago or recently that was) and automatically went "heroin addict."
OP does frequently use Kratom though, which is a legal herb that has very similar effects to other opiates.

Yeah, that's definitely the catch-22 about loaning people money. You want to be kind and help people out, but generally people who are in a bad place financially aren't going to suddenly be in a better place financially where they'll be able to pay back a loan.

It's just a home phone number for his family's home, not his direct phone. But no, I haven't tried calling it yet. I get anxious about calling strangers. Plus I don't really know how it could lead to any sort of improved situation. Because of the combination of those two things, I can't muster any sort of motivation to give the phone number a call.

6) One month passes, OP mysteriously disappears from GAF + Reddit + everywhere else

Really though, it's just too hard to speculate in a situation like this. Any number of things could've been the cause of this.
But yeah, opiates are the slipperiest slope. I just hope me loaning him money didn't lead him to slip back into a heroin addiction or something.
I mean, Kratom is essentially maintaining a low-level opiate addiction, but it's at least minor as far as those things go. And one could argue it's a justifiable way to self-medicate anxiety and depression, which OP said he has.

It affects the brain similarly to opiates, yeah. Or straight from wikipedia, "behaves as a mu-opioid receptor agonist like morphine."
With that said, for anyone just finding out about Kratom, don't think to yourself "Well it's not actually an opiate and it's legal, so it won't hurt to try it." It's a cliche, but regardless: it's a slippery slope.

I know people in this thread have told you this repeatedly but I need to say it again. Don't lend money to friends unless you are willing to never see it come back. And never lend money to strangers. I have learnt this the fucking hard way. Never again.
