Just another nail in the PS3 coffin.

R.I.P. it was the greatest paperweight and dust collector the world had ever seen.

"There have been no changes when it comes to The Last Guardian."

"It has already been dead for a long time"

I actually believe it is not dead (yet), usually when a game is canned they let us know for sure in one way or another. Especially after so many questions/years. No point in lying now, as there are not a lot of people outside of gaf who still remember this/care about it.

Considering The Last of Us (flagship title with similar name) and that games so long in development are often train wrecks, I think a new name is possible from an marketing point of view.

I mean, I suppose it would make sense if the game is so different know that calling it Last Guardian wouldn't make sense anymore, but I'm not sure what that would look like.

If it looks too different they are going to lose the original people that were on board. On the other hand, a lot of those people are just people that want the game to come out / wanting this allure of TLG to always be around and never come out.

On the one hand, I'm sad that this game is pretty much dead.

On the other hand, I'm kind of happy it's dead because if it somehow got released now it would probably be a shallow husk of what it once could have been.

Sad news. I'll play SotC in honor of it.

Also, e.g. is used for examples
i.e. is used for "in other words"

hope this is valuable to you friend!

Probably for the best, Fumito Ueda as a freelance director sounds like a recipe for mediocre. Let it be just a dream...and nothing more. It shall remain perfect that way.

"Sony closes down"

"Another company could pick it up."

"Entire gaming industry collapses, no more consoles released."

"They'll release it for TVs."

"World-destroying meteor headed towards planet."

"They'll resume development on Mars."

This game that Sony seemingly remind us every month is in development is definitely dead. At some point we're all just going to forget it ever existed and Yosh & Co will get away scott free. Crafty buggers.

Shit's dead. I want this game as much as anybody else, but come on now. If it does show up on the PS6 I'll be pleasantly surprised though.

Guys lets put it this way, as long as Sony has a system to sell, there is always a chance for this game to come out eventually. Dont lose hope.

Marty Silva from IGN on a recent episode of Podcast Beyond talked about seeing Bloodborne in Japan and he said they did talk a little bit about The Last Guardian in passing but only ever called it Trico. His impression was that it was in active development. So I dunno but a name change makes sense to me if they don't even refer to the game by TLG and opt to use the old code name. From a marketing stand point TLG has a ton of name recognition but also a lot of negativity associated with it.

IMO their contract with Ueda requires them to turn the IP over to him if they terminate the game. So they will just pretend it is in development forever so they can keep the IP.

The game's dead. Sorry, I am tired of joking about this. I have many inside sources.

What's the point of continuing to spend money on wages of employees whose abilities could instead be used on real projects just so they don't lose the IP? Why not just turn it over if they don't intend do anything with it anyway?

If this game is a no-show at E3 2015, can we please just admit that it's dead? There were funeral procession posts after E3 2013 and E3 2014. It's time to give up.

Negativity is still there and its not getting any better with each passing year the game is a no show, we left anticipation 4 E3s ago, now its become a running a joke every time Sony has an event, producers can't even speak about CES without people sniggering about TLG. much like Versus became 15 to distance itself from FF13 I think this may be in the same vain.

This is just a theory though...

You're right that people make jokes about it now, but in order to make a convincing argument you have to more explicitly connect the nature of those jokes to negative buying intent. Are the people making jokes the same people who want the game? If they are, does the fact that they make jokes imply they no longer want the game?

"Negativity" is a broad concept and I don't think the kind of negativity you're citing is necessarily the type to change branding over.

As for Versus distancing itself from FFXIII, I think that's a reasonable observation, but not an analogous situation. FFXIII has an established (negative) reputation that was worth distancing. It also cost them very little to ditch "Versus XIII" which means nothing, and replace it with XV, which means "This is a real, main-line FF game so get ready." Most importantly, it's still called Final Fantasy.

TLG's reputation, on the other hand, is mostly positive expectations due to the studio's past work, which you might adjust in consideration of its development hell, but again, only knowledgeable consumers know the game's development history and a name change won't affect their perceptions.
