The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Since the day was pretty boring, I went ahead and timed every single major cutscene in the game so we can put all the rough calculations/speculations aside and work with facts from now on:
All the non-interactive cutscenes in the game put together amount to
2 hours, 10 minutes and 5 seconds.

Ugh... I caved and watched the first 12 minutes (but I shall hold restraint and watch nothing more)

Sadly... It confirmed my fears.

The Order is le evils!
:(

Yeah. Those are long games to be fair, but yes those two have quite the big amount of cutscenes as well. The pre-rendered cutscenes in TLoU alone hover around 90 minutes IIRC. A funny sidenote is that a game like Heavy Rain has less non interactive cutscenes than all of those 3 going by that metric (since the majority is kept semi interactive).

I've never actually thought to check the amount of cut scenes games have, but it's pretty interesting. Metal Gear Solid (1) seems to be the worst offender in terms of overall average game length to cut scene ratio.

Well I was under the impression it was supposed to be pretty good but it seems Rapier has changed his/her's opinion on it?
What is there seems pretty solid (characters are mistreated unfortunately imo). Sadly you get the impression towards the end RAD couldnt quite achieve what they wanted with the story (timing/budget issues I would guess).

So general consensus is that there is no replay value? Atleast that's what someone posted on previous page. I'm cool with w/e but that's a downer if so.

Dude those avatars always confuse the fuck out of me, can one of you switch lol?

You can replay the game again (w/ chapter select) or find collectables, sounds like that's about it.

It does have lots of cutscenes, but it also has lots of replayability. You could finish that game and hop into a new game straight away without feeling exhausted. I think it has to do with being able to do things in so many different ways at your own pace.

Never seen so much focus on a game's length before.

I want an empirical breakdown in all my reviews goddamnit! QTE time, walking time, inspection time, lock picking time, stealth time, death-reload time, arena combat time, on rails combat time, interactive cutscene time, non interactive cutscene time and most importantly, moustache twirling time

Does anyone know what difficulty settings are available? Is it just the default Easy, medium and hard or is there some "grounded" type difficulty?

This would legitimately be more useful to me than most reviews.

Does anybody discovered what the Armory option on the pause menu unlocks?

No replay value would be harsh. But apart from some extra trophies there is no real incentive to go back I guess besides enjoying some chapters again that you liked. However there is the "secret" Armory option in the menu no one could access yet.

I think your last example amounts to 0 seconds pretty much :( RAD doesnt know how to handle dudes with long moustaches :D

I find it amazing that in the span of a week, we got two pieces of media where the agents are codenamed after Knights of the Round Table (Kingsman: The Secret Service and now The Order: 1886).

Kingsman was fantastic, btw. Everyone should check it out.

Seems shorter than the standard unfortunately.

Not going by GAF impressions.

Updated list of GAFer first time completions, including the relevant difficulty levels.

OsirisBlack - 14 hours Hard
Theman2k - 12 hours Hard
Verendus - 10 hours Hard
Periniumlick - 10 hours Hard
Rapier - 9 hours Normal
ReNeGaDe124 - 9 hours Normal
Nbkt - 9 hours Normal

Average is 10 hours 43 minutes.

Rapier, something about the story that you said in the spoilers thread.
Is your issue with the story solely about how underdeveloped the characters are? Or is it because of the characters AND plot as well? I don't mind if they don't delve much on the characters' backstory unless that translates into a poor plot due to how dependent it might be on the characters' past. For example, I enjoyed all Uncharted stories, specially the first one, and there was literally no character backstory on it. The backstory was built by the actual games. So is the actual story weak and uninteresting?

Would appreciate if you can answer those questions without getting into much detail.

Also, if anybody else who finished the game can chime in on this, it would be nice.

Nvm, I'll pm.

First comes love.
Then comes marriage.
Then comes the baby in the baby carriage!

I'm surprised RAD didn't make Valentine's Day cards.

We don't know how much time the Gaf players spent poking around in corners for trinkets. We know exactly how 5.5 hour guy played, and a lot of people seem to feel that that's how they would tend to play a game like this too.

It doesn't matter, it'll keep getting posted.

Which is totally fine but, random numbers next to random names means absolutely nothing to me, some more context for each playthrough would be swell.

I know I'm going to look for collectables and value GAF impressions more than any other source, especially for games of this sort.

Alright, well has anyone got the said gaffers summaries of how they played? Let's just look at the normal difficulty ones.

Just seems silly that we are trusting the play through of one dude any more over the play throughs of more than several others.

I swear this is a first time I've ever seen people debated about a game's length :|

Weird. Its something that is discussed to infinity in most any story based game thread. I mean its in almost every single thread and discussed until people are blue in the face and numb in the typing figures. If we didn't discuss it...it would be an odd day.

Something just seems suspicious about the YT playthrough. Why has RAD not actively been seeking to pull it down immediately ? (It is still up as far as I can see).

Remember Rockstar pulling down GTAV vids within minutes of them appearing....if it weren't for the fact that it only seems to be generating bad publicity I would be putting down as a PR stunt

Sam Houser is a trained ninja.

Fucking duh. It's like people don't know stuff about the video game industry.

True. If the gunplay is sick enough that'll warrant multiple playthroughs for me anyways.

Given that it's rated R and just released, it's going to take about a month to pop up at the theater and probably play only once or twice (only rated R films that get a multitude of showings are patriotic films like American Sniper; rest of slots try to be as family friendly as possible).
