The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Updated list of GAFer first time completions, including the relevant difficulty levels.

OsirisBlack - 14 hours Hard
Theman2k - 12 hours Hard
Verendus - 10 hours Hard
Periniumlick - 10 hours Hard
Rapier - 9 hours Normal
ReNeGaDe124 - 9 hours Normal
Nbkt - 9 hours Normal

Average is 10 hours 43 minutes.

These guys probably spent at least 50 % of that time discussing the game's length on GAF. So I'm going to say the average completion time is slightly above 5 hours.

Has there ever been another game where GAF reported times were put into such doubt?

I don't think anyone is claiming they didn't take as long as they said they did. The suspicion is that Gaf players tend to be reasonably completionist and to actively hunt down corner trinkets, which a lot of people, myself included, know we will not do.

And if the difference between a 5.5 hour time and a 10 hour time is 4.5 hours of looking for trinkets with zero gameplay value or reading flavor text can't you see why some people are leery of the game?

Weird. Its something that is discussed to infinity in most any story based game thread. I mean its in almost every single thread and discussed until people are blue in the face and numb in the typing figures. If we didn't discuss it...it would be an odd day.

Can't remember all the way back to Ground Zeros?
Alright not on GAF then because I didn't see any conversation focusing on the length of a game when I was a member of a gaming forum in my country. I didn't know that this was such a huge matter to GAF :)

In a good story driven game, with nice atmosphere, I tend to spend time searching and exploring..

Now I can understand people rushing and stuff but why would you buy it day one if it's possibly not your cup of tea?

So much concerns.

Given that it's rated R and just released, it's going to take about a month to pop up at the theater and probably play only once or twice (only rated R films that get a multitude of showings are patriotic films like American Sniper; rest of slots try to be as family friendly as possible).

Nevertheless,

EVERYONE, GO WATCH KINGSMAN, YOU WILL REALLY ENJOY IT, ALSO YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SONG FREE BIRD.

Just interesting that so many people are all about "GAF impressions" but seem willing to discredit these players based on a hypothesis that they play a certain way. It's almost as if we're all jumping the gun here. Declaring the game widely and broadly to be only 5.5 hours seems stupid as shit when we have a sample size of like...seven people (likewise claiming the game is for sure 10 hours is also stupid).

Actually to the last point, no because I don't care if it's "only" 5.5 hours.

It would be my cup of tea if it were longer, and that's a shame. I don't mind linear, story-driven cinematic third-person shooters, but let's not pretend that "searching and exploring" is a key gameplay component of this genre.

If it is around 5 hours for a fast pace than that puts it on par with The Last of Us if you also have a fast pace.

5 hours for a first playthrough of The Last of Us isn't "a fast pace," it's an insane pace.

Just wait then.

I know I'm going to take my time with the game, playing on hard, finding stuff etc.

To each his own.

So you suspect that GAF players tend to be completionists, and yet you (a GAFer) are not a completionist. Doesn't that just prove you should not make assumptions about the general playing style of GAF?

Finally get to play game that's not open world/ fetch quest filler this gen. I'm looking forward to a more linear paced experience, with some awesome story elements throughout. if I can squeeze 8-10 hours out of this, I'll be satisfied if it's a great 8-10 hours. So many stretched out games, have burned me out this gen.

Can't tell

Apparently people dont know what spoilers are. This thread is about impressions, yet people still posting lots of spoilers. ;_;

I'm fine with short game length though as long as it has good story and gameplay. Its not like I can afford to spend more than 15+ hrs on a game nowadays :(

I mean, it's not an assumption. It's basically the only explanation for the discrepancy. We can see 5.5 hour guy's playthrough in its entirety, the only explanation for a significantly longer playtime is that people are looking for more corner trinkets and reading more flavor text than he is. Or they're dying a lot more.

Am I the only one that kind of wants it to only be 5-6 hours? I feel like that was a strength in Ryse.

Nope. I tend to constantly check how many chapters are left in longer games so I can be done with them, unless if they're downright awesome. Would be great to have a concise game with no padding quests. I'll probably trade it in soon after I'm done anyway so I'm not really worried about not getting value for money.

No need to assume on some of those GAF times as they have said they took their time playing and doing everything. One even said he took a 30 min break in game.

If the order length is the Main problem, can we supposed that this game is really good?
In fact, if the game isn't good, I supposed that it length couldn't be the main problem. I can't imagine reading people asking for more hours of a shitty game.
Then, for me it's normal to want to pick up more items as possible when I play if I like the atmosphere of the game, the background is part of the scenario. I would not have enjoyed Tlou by rushing the game. If a game has a special atmosphere, it would be a shame not to explore it.

And when the Photomode will be add, I 'll go back to the game an other time just to find the best pictures I can do.

So for the fellows that have played, are there any extras? Art, behind the scenes videos, etc?

Remember when PS3 1st party games used to do that?

It seems like the game is not super efficient with the time that it does have. The intro of the game is a very slow burn, and there are multiple chapters (out of 16) that are unskippable cutscenes with no gameplay.

It seems to me that through the history of this forum we always have a lot of concerned posts over total playtime concerning every game that comes out. For all the deep concerns though have we ever actually had a game come out that was deemed a terrible value based on length? I can't think of one game I have played and thought - WTF! Thats it!! Only BLANK hours!!!

There's been similar controversy before outside of this forum, Vanquish and Metal Gear Rising are two examples.

I don't see why length or re-playability can't be valid concerns or items to bring up.

And what is your problem with unskippable cutscenes? I like cutscenes in Uncharted or tlou, I never cut them, even on my third playthrough.
If the scenario needs cutscenes with no gameplay it's fine. I supposed you never played mgs4..

Still interested in game but think gonna wait for a price drop, still haven't finished far cry 4 and just got evolve. Almost seems like Ryse for Xbox, witch I really enojyed so not ment as a slight against it, just seems like it will drop in price super fast

Man, I don't wanna shit on the parade, but pleeeease adjust characterization expectations accordingly. :(

It greatly hurts replayability, especially when a good chunk of the game consists of cutscenes. I'd like the option is all. It is just insane to me that there are a good amount of chapters in this game that are 100% cutscene with no gameplay (even QTEs) in between. Some of them go up to 7-8 minutes unbroken too.

I think about Max Payne 3 and how I consistently felt like my control was being interrupted by the onslaught of cutscenes, and I'm getting the sense that might be a similar feel here. Fortunately MP3 made up for it with amazing TPS controls - especially if you were playing on mouse and keyboard.

Cutscenes should accentuate the gameplay moments, like they do in TLOU or Uncharted. I say this as a fan of the shit show that is MGS4.

Unskippable cut scenes have been pretty much universally opposed in games for years. It's not so bad the first time around, but you should always have the option to skip them on any subsequent play through.

Hey man, you're not in my head.

I'm just gonna go ahead and say Percival is the Big Brother Grayson never had.

Nope, father figure.

I want the video game equivalent of this to happen:

I'm seeing loads of grayed out names - I'm assuming this and the other Order threads are already taking a heavy toll? Seen at least one person who is probably perma-banned too, after being downgraded a couple of months ago.

Pfft. I have a beard that will tickle her all over.
