The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Hmmmm, sounds good.

I don't think this is gonna make me go out and get a PS4 right now, but when I do, this will probably be on my list to pick up. Nice to see it turned out well.

Guess how long it took for me to finish Halo 1 on my first play through? About 5 hours. That includes 45 minutes of cutscenes.

I don't remember the length of that being a concern with everyone on the internet. And it only had local split screen multiplayer as an added value.

Oh how times have changed.
Good thing The Order has an incredible multiplayer like Halo.

That's nice and all but Halo had some of the greatest co-op I've ever played and multiplayer was a blast even in split screen.

I don't think it would've been as amazing as a single player only game.

The point stands though, that for me at least, and I suspect many others, the single player campaign - though perhaps short - was compelling enough on it's own.

Every gamer has his or her priorities and tastes. For me it's Single player and story driven. That's my focus. Hence why Titanfall means nothing to me and why if The Order delivers a compelling gameplay experience tied to a strong narrative...I'll bite even if the experience is short.

Too short is very seldom an issue for me. Too boring and thus perhaps too long most definitely is.

No idea how Halo came in to this....

If there's a game out there to compare The Order to, it's Uncharted Drake's Fortune. This is RADs Uncharted, and I fully expect the sequel to be more feature and content rich, especially now that the engine building is mostly out the way.

Impressions thread has become Halo vs The Order.

Might as well pack it up

I completely agree. This basically feels like the same situation, except we're transplanted one generation over.

Drake's Fortune was great fun too. A great building block for the Uncharted franchise.

Guys you can beat the main story of Super Smash Bros for Wii U in under 20 minutes. Why does that game get a pass when The Order doesn't?

Just finished it (in one day). Took me between 9 and 10 hours on hard. I liked it, but except for the (absolutely stunning) visuals every aspect of the game had it's problems. Some minor, some a little bit more pronounced.

Are you reviewing it? If not, why did you finish it one day?

Can we just talk about the game, and less about comparisons?

A game could be 20 hours and be nothing more than shovelware, and 10 hours and candidate for GotY/G, etc.

Will The Order be that? Probably not, given the criticisms regarding different facets of both game design and the gravitas of the story. But considering that the impressions so far largely paints a game that most people feel is good, even if flawed here and there, that tells me that the pacing and moment-to-moment of the game feels right, even if it's not a long game.

Well... I watched the entire youtube thread. 7-8 hours seems about right for most given the guy playing avoided many collectibles but also seemed to explore areas by walking around just not stopping to pick up things.

I do think this game has way too many QTE style events. Gun play looked good but sadly it's not front and center and instead sits in between stretches of watching and QTE play. There is platforming but it's minimal.

The polish/graphical display of the game is fantastic so I have no doubt many will find enjoyment but I think there is definitely room for those giving the game criticism based on having watched the whole game over the course of my work day 8am ish to 2pm.

Who are the actors playing Galahad and co.?

When it comes to PS Exclusives (ok, maybe just the bigger games in general), at least the ones I played and enjoyed, it always felt like the actors were somewhat present in the marketing, even if only online. Maybe that's mostly just a Nolan North and Troy Baker thing.

This dude played Galahad, not sure about the other characters

Then I assume it had you hooked if you played most of the day. Glad to hear.

Not exactly hooked, like I said, I just had a lot of free time on my hands and the story is good enough to keep you interested, although honestly, it could have been a lot better. At least if you compare it to other media. And seeing as Kirk Ellis was involved in that I was actually surprised how hamfisted some parts of the story were. As I said, if you compare it to movies or especially quality TV.

This game better be the best fuckin game I ever play if I'm picking up a PS4 for this.

This is just begging for disappointment

Well........ the Order needs to sell well first, and to tell you the truth this is one part that I worry the most about the Order.

Uncharted has that kind of summer-Hollywood flick atmosphere about it and that makes it easier to sell. The Order though? It's dark, gloomy, and "monstrous"... hopefully it'll do well, because I dig the setting and the overall vibe of the game, and a full singleplayer like this nowadays seems so rare I'd like it to do well on principle alone.

Do yourself a favor and don't then. You'll get no enjoyment from the game if you have that predisposition.

Yes, you'll be running to see what else that actor has done because the performance is so good. They never said there were famous actors. Hype-GAF just took the quote and ran with it.

Ah, so the game is what I expected it to be initially :D; fun gameplay matched with an interesting story and great presentation :). Ready at Dawn did fantastic work with Ghost of Sparta and Daxter, so seeing them do yet another fantastic job for a Sony game is great :).

I was quite negative about the tittle in the past (thought it was 'just another shooter' using its pretty visuals to mask generic gameplay) but from what the OP stated, it looks like those thoughts were dead wrong :).

Another great game under Ready at Dawn's belt :).

Maybe I'm easier to please than others, or maybe REmake Remastered shocked me back to the PS1/PS2 days, but a 6 to 10 hour tightly-paced adventure/action game sounds fine to me and can still have a lot of replayability.

The reason I bring up the resident evil remaster is that it's a pretty simple game and not a very long one (most people can beat it in about three hours or less once they've played it one time) and yet I just played that game seven times in a row to get the platinum trophy because it's just so well executed, dripping with atmosphere, and the mechanics just work. And that game doesn't even have that great of a story and most the time you're just putting things together to solve puzzles, so I can only assume that if The Order's gunplay is amazing and tight, I'll love replaying it as well.

Basically, if the game works, and is well executed, I usually have fun playing through it a few times; and thus, a six-hour campaign can easily turn into about 20 hours of fun.

Wow, just watched a good bit the play through. Exactly how I thought it would be, not in a good way. I called the Destiny flop and I am calling this too. This thread is very reminiscent of the Destiny hype threads where it seemed like many were deceiving themselves and were trying to hard to be excited.

No, pretty sure he was just asking to see if the guy was hooked and that's why he didn't stop

hmmm. Ok doesn't at all look like it but coolio. Never can tell tone in a post.

LOL

Man I can't wait for this game to finally just be released, then people can actually, you know, discuss the game instead of what ever is being discussed now.
